Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteen thirties our country was going through a serious depression, and jobs were at a premium, and were very hard to find. Many families could not afford to feed their children let alone pay rent or other necessary costs. As result, foster homes and orphanages began to spring up to provide housing and care for these children. Religious and non-religion oriented homes were in the forefront of this movement in the U.S. Many parents left their children in these homes, while they made many efforts to find jobs and survive themselves. The Second World War came along by the nineteen forties, the war effort needed many workers to build the war machine that was needed to send our troops into battle. Women became the strong workforce needed. Again, this left many children stranded at a home with no parent. The foster homes and orphanages continued their efforts to hold or house these children. This story is the true story of one such child that ended up spending his first seventeen years in foster homes or orphanages. It gives some insight as to what it may have been like for our children of the depression and war years.

Book excerpt: Helping troubled parents to raise their children adequately is of crucial importance for parents, their children and society at large. Distressed parents have themselves often been endangered and, as a consequence, sometimes endanger their children either through maltreatment or through the effects of parental psychiatric disorder. Raising Parents explains how that happens and clusters parents in terms of the psychological processes that result in maladaptive childrearing. The book then delineates DMM Integrative Treatment in terms of assessment, formulation, and treatment. New formulations are offered for problems that have resisted treatment and cases demonstrate how the ideas can be applied in real treatment settings. The book closes with 10 suggestions for improving professionals’ responses to troubled families and endangered children. This edition of Raising Parents introduces DMM Integrative Treatment and demonstrates how to use it with vulnerable families. DMM Integrative Treatment is an interpersonal process and this book will be essential reading for clinicians from all disciplines, including psychiatry and psychology, social work, nursing and all types of psychotherapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solve toddler challenges with eight key mindshifts that will help you parent with clarity, calmness, and self-control. In Why is My Child in Charge?, Claire Lerner shows how making critical mindshifts—seeing children’s behaviors through a new lens —empowers parents to solve their most vexing childrearing challenges. Using real life stories, Lerner unpacks the individualized process she guides parents through to settle common challenges, such as throwing tantrums in public, delaying bedtime for hours, refusing to participate in family mealtimes, and resisting potty training. Lerner then provides readers with a roadmap for how to recognize the root cause of their child’s behavior and how to create and implement an action plan tailored to the unique needs of each child and family. Why is My Child in Charge? is like having a child development specialist in your home. It shows how parents can develop proven, practical strategies that translate into adaptable, happy kids and calm, connected, in-control parents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breastfeeding and child feeding at the center of nurturing practices, yet the work of nurture has escaped the scrutiny of medical and social scientists. Anthropology offers a powerful biocultural approach that examines how custom and culture interact to support nurturing practices. Our framework shows how the unique constitutions of mothers and infants regulate each other. The Dance of Nurture integrates ethnography, biology and the political economy of infant feeding into a holistic framework guided by the metaphor of dance. It includes a critique of efforts to improve infant feeding practices globally by UN agencies and advocacy groups concerned with solving global nutrition and health problems.

Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic account of parental behaviour and the means of identifying and addressing inadequate parenting. It is intended for professionals who work with children or adults who were harmed as children, and its central concern is with parents who endanger their children or whose children may endanger themselves or others. Understanding and helping troubled parents to become secure and balanced people is of crucial importance for the parents themselves, for their children and for society at large. This book is a guide to understanding parents as people who have children as opposed to seeing them as existing solely in terms of their ability to fulfill their children's needs. The book shares equally a respect for theory, empirical science, and social values and applications. It aims to provide a springboard for new lines of research (e.g. around the role of danger in eliciting inadequate parental behavior and the interdependency of parent and child behaviour) as well as a guide for clinicians and professionals who must protect both disturbed individuals and the public to understand their clients/patients better (both parents and children). Raising Parents will be essential reading for professionals and practitioners in the field, including psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists ands ocial workers as well as those taking courses in attachment and psychopathology, developmental psychology, clinical psychology and behavioural courses in psychiatry.
