Download or read book Nursing Student Stress and Demographic Factors written by Mary Lelia Baker and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statement of Problem Nursing students experience high levels of stress (Beck, Hackett, Srivastava, McKim, & Rockwell, 1997), have been shown to be at increased risk for physical and psychiatric illnesses (Beck & Srivastava, 1991) and stress has been shown to increase dropout rates (O'Regan, 2005). No prior published studies that focus on the relationship between demographic variables and reported stress levels in nursing students have been published. Sources of Data Data was collected from a convenience sample of all nursing students currently enrolled at California State University San Marcos. Students completed an online survey that included demographic data, the Student Nurse Stress Index (SNSI) (Jones & Johnston, 1999), and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (Strahan & Gerbasi, 1972). Conclusions Reached Two independent variables, GPA (p=.001) and Study Time (p=.013) showed statistical significance in affecting the self-reported stress levels as measured by the SNSI.

Book Synopsis Factors Affecting Nursing Student's Perception of Stress and Reactions to Stress by : Donna Alexander
Download or read book Factors Affecting Nursing Student's Perception of Stress and Reactions to Stress written by Donna Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyze the self-assessment of stressors, and the reaction to stress in the LPN nursing student. The study was comprised of 43 Licensed Practical Nurse students in the Nursing Department of the Allied Health Division of a community college in southeast United States. Data were collected using the Student-Life Stress Inventory Tool (Gadzella 2001) and a demographic survey. Data was collected within the first two weeks of the three semester program. Results of this study indicated that there were no significant differences in the students' reported level of stressors, and reaction to stress based on level of stress and demographic factors. The reported level of stressors by this small sample size may not be those stressors typically encountered by the academic student on a national level. The degree to which the students in this survey reported their level of stress and their ability to accommodate their reaction to stressors may also account for the variability in the results of this study and the results of previous studies by Dr. Gadzella.
Book Synopsis Describing the Relationship Between Stress Levels and Working Demographics in Associate Degree Nursing Students by : Lisa Thielke
Download or read book Describing the Relationship Between Stress Levels and Working Demographics in Associate Degree Nursing Students written by Lisa Thielke and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to investigate the relationship between self-reported stress levels and the amount of work outside the home of students enrolled in an associate degree nursing program in Western Minnesota. The Neuman System Model (NSM) was utilized to focus on the holistic person, describe their relationship to stress, response to stressors, and how to restructure the environment. A convenience sample of semester I and semester II associate degree (AD) nursing students (n=37) currently enrolled in a nursing program were surveyed at a community and technical college. The working demographic form was created to collect information about the same population. The student nurse stress index (SNSI) tool was utilized to measure stress. The results of the study indicated that there was a significant relationship between three of the categories (CC, PP, and IW) in self-reported stress levels tool and the number of hours worked outside the home in an AD nursing student. The results also indicated there was some relationship between one of the categories (AL) from the SNSI tool and the number of hours worked outside the home in an AD nursing student.
Book Synopsis Moral Resilience by : Cynda H. Rushton
Download or read book Moral Resilience written by Cynda H. Rushton and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suffering is an unavoidable reality in healthcare. Not only are patients and families suffering but also the clinicians who care for them. Commonly the suffering experienced by clinicians is moral in nature, in part a reflection of the increasing complexity of health care, their roles within it, and the expanding range of available interventions that challenge their moral foundations. Moral suffering is the anguish that arises occurs in response to moral adversity that challenges clinicians integrity: the inner harmony that arises when their essential values and commitments are aligned with their choices and actions. The sources and sequelae of moral distress, one type of moral suffering, have been documented among clinicians across specialties. Transforming their suffering will require solutions that expanded individual and system strategies. Moral resilience, the capacity of an individual to restore or sustain integrity in response to moral adversity, offers a path forward. It encompasses capacities aimed at developing self- regulation and self-awareness, buoyancy, moral efficacy, self-stewardship and ultimately personal and relational integrity. Whether it involves gradual or profound radical change clinicians have the potential to transform themselves and their clinical practice in ways that more authentically reflect their character, intentions and values. The burden of healing our healthcare system is not the sole responsibility of individuals. Clinicians and healthcare organizations must work together to transform moral suffering by cultivating the individual capacities for moral resilience and designing a new architecture to support ethical practice. Used worldwide for scalable and sustainable change, the Conscious Full Spectrum approach, offers a method to solve problems to support integrity, shift patterns that undermine moral resilience and ethical practice, and leverage the inner potential of clinicians and leaders to produce meaningful and sustainable results that benefit all.

Book Synopsis Satisfaction Attainment in Nursing Staff by : Lucy E. Cubias
Download or read book Satisfaction Attainment in Nursing Staff written by Lucy E. Cubias and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examines how healthcare related stress in graduate nursing students impact satisfaction attainment. The factors examined in this study included demographic characteristics such as age, years in practice and employment status. Other factors examined include general health, perceived stress, salary, vacation, scheduled hours, flexibility, benefits and opportunities for advancement. The tool used in this study was a demographic survey combined with a 67-item questionnaire developed by the researcher. The questionnaire was adapted from the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS 10), The General Health Survey (GHQ 28) and The McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale (MMSS). Forty-five participants took part in this study. Each participant was currently a graduate nursing student. The study revealed that graduate nurses in the Los Angeles metropolitan area were less satisfied overall with diminished perceptions of health and increased stress particularly at 6-10 years of experience. The findings also suggest that work- related stress prevention programs would promote satisfaction attainment among nursing staff and potentially improve organizational outcomes.

Contributors: Ruth Belling, Michelle Butler, Catherine Comiskey, Siobhan Corrigan, Gloria Crispino, Orla Dempsey, Suzanne Guerin, Maree Johnson, Carmel Kelly, Elaine Lehane, Maria Lohan, Susan McLaren, Deirdre Mongan, Corina Naughton, Rhona O'Connell, Elaine Pierce, Gary Rolfe, Eileen Savage, Anne Scott, Emma Stokes, Roger Watson ""Learning quantitative research is taken much for granted. This is probably why there are fewer generic books on quantitative than qualitative research. This book is long overdue. Clearly- written and well structured, it takes us through the whole journey of a research project from developing 'research questions' to 'presenting the findings', passing through philosophical underpinnings, recruitment of participants and ethical considerations. Written by an array of well-known researchers and teachers, this book will certainly appeal to new as well as seasoned researchers. Those who will use it, will not be disappointed." Kader Parahoo, University of Ulster "The title of this text is somewhat misleading. It is not only an excellent and thorough guide to qualitative health research methods; it is also an excellent introduction to all forms of qualitative research. It takes the reader gently through theoretical and ethical concerns to the practicalities and benefits of utilising qualitative approaches. As such it is that rare thing; a text that can be used by novice researchers to learn their craft, and a key reference resource for experienced research practitioners." Dr. John Cullen, School of Business, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, UK "This is a first-rate collection of essays that promotes an informed understanding of both underpinning principles and widely used techniques. A great deal of effort has clearly been invested in co-ordinating the contributions, and this has delivered clarity, complementarity and effective coverage. This is a welcome, carefully-crafted and very accessible resource that will appeal to students and researchers in healthcare and beyond." Martin Beirne, Professor of Management and Organizational Behaviour, University of Glasgow, Adam Smith Business School, UK

Book Synopsis Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patient-centered, high-quality health care relies on the well-being, health, and safety of health care clinicians. However, alarmingly high rates of clinician burnout in the United States are detrimental to the quality of care being provided, harmful to individuals in the workforce, and costly. It is important to take a systemic approach to address burnout that focuses on the structure, organization, and culture of health care. Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being builds upon two groundbreaking reports from the past twenty years, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System and Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, which both called attention to the issues around patient safety and quality of care. This report explores the extent, consequences, and contributing factors of clinician burnout and provides a framework for a systems approach to clinician burnout and professional well-being, a research agenda to advance clinician well-being, and recommendations for the field.
