Book Synopsis Student Nurses' Attitudes Toward the Elderly After a Hospice Clinical Experience by : Vicki Ann McLeod
Download or read book Student Nurses' Attitudes Toward the Elderly After a Hospice Clinical Experience written by Vicki Ann McLeod and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the next ten years, the United States will face the greatest shift in demographics in history. Worldwide, the baby boomer generation is aging quickly, most importantly, who will provide nursing care to this group of people who will also require the greatest proportion of health care resources. Current research reveals very few baccalaureate student nurse graduates express interest in self-selecting gerontology as a career choice. The purpose of this qualitative study (N=8) was to identify why new registered nurses do not choose gerontology as a career choice. The sources of data for the study were comprised of a demographic profile of each student, students' journals and the researcher's notes from the students' responses to twelve scripted questions. The most salient themes identified as to why new registered nurses do not self-select gerontology as a career specialty, were: ageism; unsatisfactory professional mentors and role models; feelings of powerlessness to change the long-term care nursing model of long term care facilities, and inadequate academic and clinical preparation to feel competent care giving to the elderly population.

Book Synopsis Attitudes of Nursing Students Toward Older Adults by : Kathy L. Rush
Download or read book Attitudes of Nursing Students Toward Older Adults written by Kathy L. Rush and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Older adults represent the largest and fastest growing segment of the population and are among those who access the health care system to the greatest extent. These trends call for health care professionals, such as nurses, to be well prepared to care for the specialised and often complex needs of the older adult cohort. This preparation often begins in basic nursing educational programs when nursing students are introduced formally to the care of older adults. However, nursing students do not enter their professional programs unaffected by their socio-cultural context and especially societal attitudes toward ageing and the older adult. This book provides a synthesis and critique of this research to identify what is known, to uncover gaps in knowledge, to make recommendations for practice, and to consider directions for future research.

Book Synopsis Nurses on the Move by : Mireille Kingma
Download or read book Nurses on the Move written by Mireille Kingma and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South African nurses care for patients in London, hospitals recruit Filipino nurses to Los Angeles, and Chinese nurses practice their profession in Ireland. In every industrialized country of the world, patients today increasingly find that the nurses who care for them come from a vast array of countries. In the first book on international nurse migration, Mireille Kingma investigates one of today's most important health care trends. The personal stories of migrant nurses that fill this book contrast the nightmarish existences of some with the successes of others. Health systems in industrialized countries now depend on nurses from the developing world to address their nursing shortages. This situation raises a host of thorny questions. What causes nurses to decide to migrate? Is this migration voluntary or in some way coerced? When developing countries are faced with nurse vacancy rates of more than 40 percent, is recruitment by industrialized countries fair play in a competitive market or a new form of colonialization? What happens to these workers—and the patients left behind—when they migrate? What safeguards will protect nurses and the patients they find in their new workplaces? Highlighting the complexity of the international rules and regulations now being constructed to facilitate the lucrative trade in human services, Kingma presents a new way to think about the migration of skilled health-sector labor as well as the strategies needed to make migration work for individuals, patients, and the health systems on which they depend.
