Book excerpt: Unlike most Asian and Latin American countries, sub-Saharan Africa has seen both an increase in population growth rates and a weakening of traditional patterns of child-spacing since the 1960s. It is tempting to conclude that sub-Saharan countries have simply not reached adequate levels of income, education, and urbanization for a fertility decline to occur. This book argues, however, that such a socioeconomic threshold hypothesis will not provide an adequate basis for comparison. These authors take the view that any reproductive regime is also anchored to a broader pattern of social organization, including the prevailing modes of production, rules of exchange, patterns of religious systems, kinship structure, division of labor, and gender roles. They link the characteristic features of the African reproductive regime with regard to nuptiality, polygyny, breastfeeding, postpartum abstinence, sterility, and child-fostering to other specifically African characteristics of social organization and culture. Substantial attention is paid to the heterogeneity that prevails among sub-Saharan societies and considerable use is made, therefore, of interethnic comparisons. As a result the book goes considerably beyond mere demographic description and builds bridges between demography and anthropology or sociology. They have traditionally been viewed as repositories of information and wisdom, and are critical pillars of the community but as the HIV/AIDS pandemic destroys family systems, the elderly increasingly have to deal with the loss of their own support while absorbing the additional responsibilities of caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Aging in Sub-Saharan Africa explores ways to promote U.S. research interests and to augment the sub-Saharan governments' capacity to address the many challenges posed by population aging. Five major themes are explored in the book such as the need for a basic definition of "older person," the need for national governments to invest more in basic research and the coordination of data collection across countries, and the need for improved dialogue between local researchers and policy makers. This book makes three major recommendations: 1) the development of a research agenda 2) enhancing research opportunity and implementation and 3) the translation of research findings.

Globalization, with its power to reach across national boundaries and into the smallest communities, carries with it the transformative power of new markets and new technology. At the same time, globalization brings with it new ideas and lifestyles that can conflict with traditional norms and values. And while the economic benefits are potentially enormous, the actual course of globalization has not been without its critics who charge that, to date, the gains have been very unevenly distributed, generating a new set of problems associated with rising inequality and social polarization. Regardless of how the globalization debate is resolved, it is clear that as broad global forces transform the world in which the next generation will live and work, the choices that today's young people make or others make on their behalf will facilitate or constrain their success as adults. Book excerpt: Fertility in Africa remains the highest in the world, the average total fertility rate for the continent is about 6.3 children per woman. So far little evidence is found of the beginning of a sustained and irreversible fertility decline in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) of the sort experienced in other developing areas. Contraceptive use is low (except for spacing purposes and outside of marriage) in sub-Saharan Africa, but there is little evidence that this is due to short supply. Reported ideal family sizes remain quite high suggesting that demand for contraception is low. Analysis of the determinants of fertility in Africa using recently available data is likely to provide new insight into the prospects for fertility decline and the design of population policy. Future analysis should focus on four questions that may be answerable using existing data, and may prove useful in evaluating policy and targeting resources : 1) what are the sources and determinants of observed fertility decline in Africa?; 2) what effects does education have on fertility, family size, and contraceptive use?; 3) what are the likely effects of increases in availability and costs of schooling, health care and family planning services on contraceptive use and fertility? and 4) how will these increases affect measures of child survival, educational attainment and anthropometric status?

Book excerpt: "The marriage of any person below the age of eighteen, often referred to as child marriage, is widely considered a violation of human rights. Over the past decade the practice has garnered attention as a potential threat to women's health. Despite increasing discourse, estimates of trends in the prevalence of child marriage are dated and methodological challenges plague published studies of the relationship between child marriage and health. My thesis provides an updated examination of trends in sub-Saharan Africa, where rates of child marriage are highest, and aims to address some of the difficulties inherent in estimating the effects of child marriage on women's health. The first manuscript in this thesis describes changes in the prevalence of child marriage in twenty-nine sub-Saharan African countries over a twenty-year period. I used a novel estimation technique to avoid biases that may have affected earlier studies. My results indicate that the prevalence of child marriage has declined over time but the rate of decline has stagnated in some countries. Estimating the effects of child marriage on health is challenging for many reasons. The exposure is difficult to define and measure. Women married as children differ in many ways from their peers who married later in life, leading to concerns regarding confounding. I provide a critical evaluation of child marriage as a treatment within the potential outcomes framework and describe the challenge of approximating a causal contrast using observational data. The second manuscript included in this thesis makes the assumptions required for effect estimation more transparent through the use of matching techniques to estimate the effect of child marriage on the risk of domestic violence. Improving educational opportunities for girls is a promising mechanism for delaying marriage. Since the 1990s many sub-Saharan African countries have adopted legislation that prohibits public primary schools from charging tuition fees. Reducing financial barriers to schooling may result in greater educational attainment, particularly for girls. The third manuscript describes my evaluation of the effect of these legislative changes on the timing of reproductive events among girls in sixteen countries. Child marriage remains a pervasive violation of human rights that disproportionately affects girls throughout the developing world. Upholding these rights requires knowledge of the geographic distribution of child marriage and the effectiveness of policies that aim to end the practice. This thesis represents my contribution to this effort." --
