Book excerpt: Due to the requirement for enhanced cooling technologies on modern gas turbine engines, advanced research and development has had to take place in field of thermal engineering. Among the gas turbine cooling technologies, impingement jet cooling is one of the most effective in terms of cooling effectiveness, manufacturability and cost. The chapters contained in this book describe research on state-of-the-art and advanced cooling technologies that have been developed, or that are being researched, with a variety of approaches from theoretical, experimental, and CFD studies. The authors of the chapters have been selected from some of the most active researchers and scientists on the subject. This is the first to book published on the topics of gas turbines and heat transfer to focus on impingement cooling alone.

Book excerpt: The Reynolds number for the flow through LPT at cruise conditions is much lower than that at the take-off conditions. This low-Re flow has a great tendency to undergo separation on the suction surface of the turbine blade when an adverse pressure gradient is encountered. This prevailing flow separation is detrimental to the performance of the LPT. Hence, low-pressure turbine (LPT) stage in aircraft engines undergo significant losses during cruise conditions. Therefore, accurate prediction of flow separation is crucial for an effective design of LPT blade, and is achieved in the present work using a high-order accurate numerical solution procedure. The accurate prediction of flow separation is necessary for implementing flow control techniques, passive or active, to possibly delay or prevent the occurrence of flow separation in the low-pressure turbine stage in an aircraft engine. A multi-block, periodic, structured grid of multiple topologies generated by the grid generation software, GRIDPRO, is used for the present numerical analysis. The three-dimensional, unsteady, full Navier-Stokes equations are solved to analyze the flow. A MPI-based higher-order, parallel, chimera Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), version of the FDL3DI flow solver, developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, is extended for the present turbo-machinery application. A sixth-order accurate compact-difference scheme is usual for the spatial discretization, coupled with tenth-order filtering to minimize the numerical oscillations in the flow solution and maintain numerical stability, along with second-order accurate temporal discretization. Also examined is the effect of grid density and the location of the upstream inflow boundary ... Finally, the baseline simulation study of flow over a circular cylinder at ReD = 13,400 is performed as a starting step for the future study of implementation of flow control techniques for preventing or delaying the flow separation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prediction of unsteady flow field in turbine blades as well as in the turbomachinery stages is now an affordable item, and is required by the reduced margin for increasing efficiency, stability and life of propulsion components, The numerical tools are now capable to run within reasonable time 3D unsteady calculation for full stage, and the new techniques on the computation and parallel computer allow the improvements of results in terms of cost and accuracy, Despite these advantages many questions remain open and the physical modelling joint with the numerical improvements is still a challenge if it has to produce usable results, compared with the experiments. Aim of this paper is the report on some experience and the attempt to give some answer on that challenge, presenting results of a recent activity on modelling side compared with experiments as well, A full-3D unstructured solver based on an upwind TVD finite volume scheme has been developed and applied to the simulation of an unsteady turbine stage, The development of the numerical strategy is discussed with particular concern on the validation of the unsteady model through a comparison against experiments, NISRE approach and a 3D steady stage computation, The present work considers the application of the fully unstructured hybrid solver for internal viscous flows, as well, The multiblock version of the solver developed for turbine is considered, because of the highly improved performance as compared to the single domain version of the code, Moreover, the high numerical costs involved in 3D unsteady computations required the development of a new parallel single program multiple-data version of the numerical solver. The results compare favorably with a set of time averaged and unsteady experimental data available for the turbine stage under investigation, which is representative of a wide class of aero-engines.

Book excerpt: Experimental data from jet-engine tests have indicated that unsteady blade row interactions and separation can have a significant impact on the efficiency of low-pressure turbine stages. Measured turbine efficiencies at takeoff can be as much as two points higher than those at cruise conditions. Several recent studies have revealed that Reynolds number effects may contribute to the lower efficiencies at cruise conditions. In the current study numerical simulations have been performed to study the boundary layer development in a two-stage low-pressure turbine, and to evaluate the transition models available for low Reynolds number flows in turbomachinery. The results of the simulations have been compared with experimental data, including airfoil loadings and integral boundary layer quantities. The predicted unsteady results display similar trends to the experimental data, but significantly overestimate the amplitude of the unsteadiness. The time-averaged results show close agreement with the experimental data.Dorney, Daniel J. and Ashpis, David E. and Halstead, David E. and Wisler, David C.Glenn Research CenterJET ENGINES; TWO STAGE TURBINES; COMPUTERIZED SIMULATION; BALDWIN-LOMAX TURBULENCE MODEL; BOUNDARY LAYER TRANSITION; TRANSITION FLOW; FLOW VISUALIZATION; BOUNDARY LAYER SEPARATION; SEPARATED FLOW; ROTOR BLADES (TURBOMACHINERY); TAKEOFF; CRUISING FLIGHT; COMPUTATIONAL GRIDS; NOZZLE FLOW; SKIN FRICTION; TURBINE BLADES; REYNOLDS NUMBER; FLOW CHARACTERISTICS; FLOW DISTRIBUTION

Book excerpt: This book introduces novel design techniques developed to increase the safety of aircraft engines. The authors demonstrate how the application of uncertainty methods can overcome problems in the accurate prediction of engine lift, caused by manufacturing error. This in turn ameliorates the difficulty of achieving required safety margins imposed by limits in current design and manufacturing methods. This text shows that even state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are not able to predict the same performance measured in experiments; CFD methods assume idealised geometries but ideal geometries do not exist, cannot be manufactured and their performance differs from real-world ones. By applying geometrical variations of a few microns, the agreement with experiments improves dramatically, but unfortunately the manufacturing errors in engines or in experiments are unknown. In order to overcome this limitation, uncertainty quantification considers the probability density functions of manufacturing errors. It is then possible to predict the overall variation of the jet engine performance using stochastic techniques. Uncertainty Quantification in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Engines demonstrates that some geometries are not affected by manufacturing errors, meaning that it is possible to design safer engines. Instead of trying to improve the manufacturing accuracy, uncertainty quantification when applied to CFD is able to indicate an improved design direction. This book will be of interest to gas turbine manufacturers and designers as well as CFD practitioners, specialists and researchers. Graduate and final year undergraduate students may also find it of use.
