Book excerpt: The properties of turbulent premixed flames were investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Attention was limited to hydrogen/air mixtures burning as either turbulent jet flames or a freely propagating flames in isotropic turbulence. The research has application to a variety to premixed turbulent combustion processes: underwater metal cutting at great depth, primary combustors for high-speed airbreathing propulsion systems, afterburners, fuel/ air explosions, and spark-ignition internal combustion engines. Major findings of this phase of the investigation are as follows: (1) effects of preferential diffusion are relevent for flames at high Reynolds number, retarding and enhancing the distortion of the flame surface by turbulence for stable and unstable conditions, respectively; (2) local turbulent burning velocity, flame brush thickness and the fractal dimension of the flame surface all increase with distance from the flameholder, with larger rates of increases at larger turbulence intensities; (3) estimates of flame properties using contemporary turbulence models were only fair because these methods cannot account for effects of preferential diffusion, distance from the flameholder and finite laminar flame speeds; and (4) the stochastic simulation duplicated measured trends of flame surface properties for neutral preferential diffusion conditions (the only case considered) but underestimated effects of turbulence (particularly near the flame tip) due to the limitations of a two-dimensional simulation.

Book excerpt: A work on turbulent premixed combustion is important because of increased concern about the environmental impact of combustion and the search for new combustion concepts and technologies. An improved understanding of lean fuel turbulent premixed flames must play a central role in the fundamental science of these new concepts. Lean premixed flames have the potential to offer ultra-low emission levels, but they are notoriously susceptible to combustion oscillations. Thus, sophisticated control measures are inevitably required. The editors' intent is to set out the modeling aspects in the field of turbulent premixed combustion. Good progress has been made on this topic, and this cohesive volume contains contributions from international experts on various subtopics of the lean premixed flame problem.

It is therefore important that we understand the mechanisms of combustion and, in particular, the role of turbulence within this process. Combustion always takes place within a turbulent flow field for two reasons: turbulence increases the mixing process and enhances combustion, but at the same time combustion releases heat which generates flow instability through buoyancy, thus enhancing the transition to turbulence. The four chapters of this book present a thorough introduction to the field of turbulent combustion. After an overview of modeling approaches, the three remaining chapters consider the three distinct cases of premixed, non-premixed, and partially premixed combustion, respectively. This book will be of value to researchers and students of engineering and applied mathematics by demonstrating the current theories of turbulent combustion within a unified presentation of the field.

Yet researchers face several challenges in dealing with premixed turbulent combustion, from its nonlinear multiscale nature and the impact of local phenomena to the multitude of competing models. Filling a gap in the literature, Fundamentals of Premixed Turbulent Combustion introduces the state of the art of premixed turbulent combustion in an accessible manner for newcomers and experienced researchers alike. To more deeply consider current research issues, the book focuses on the physical mechanisms and phenomenology of premixed flames, with a brief discussion of recent advances in partially premixed turbulent combustion. It begins with a summary of the relevant knowledge needed from disciplines such as thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, molecular transport processes, and fluid dynamics. The book then presents experimental data on the general appearance of premixed turbulent flames and details the physical mechanisms that could affect the flame behavior. It also examines the physical and numerical models for predicting the key features of premixed turbulent combustion. Emphasizing critical analysis, the book compares competing concepts and viewpoints with one another and with the available experimental data, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. In addition, it discusses recent advances and highlights unresolved issues. Written by a leading expert in the field, this book provides a valuable overview of the physics of premixed turbulent combustion. Combining simplicity and topicality, it helps researchers orient themselves in the contemporary literature and guides them in selecting the best research tools for their work.

The investigations were performed using Mie scattering, Particle Image Velocimetry, Rayleigh scattering, and broad-band luminosity imaging techniques. Methane-air flames associated with a relatively wide range of turbulence intensities, fuel-air equivalence ratios, and mean bulk flow velocities were investigated. For a relatively moderate value of turbulence intensity, a new concept is introduced and utilized to provide a detailed description associated with interaction of turbulent flow and flame front. The concept pertains to reactants velocity estimated at the vicinity of the flame front and is referred to as the edge velocity. Specifically, it is shown that fluctuations of the flame front position are induced by fluctuations of the edge velocity. For a relatively wide range of turbulence intensity, several characteristics of turbulent premixed flames, namely, front topology, brush thickness, surface density, and consumption speeds are investigated. For the first time, several flame front structures are identified and studied. It is shown that, due to formation of these front structures, the regime of turbulent premixed combustion transitions from the regime of counter-gradient diffusion to that of the gradient diffusion. In addition to these, a comprehensive study is performed to investigate influence of flame configuration on several flame front characteristics. It is obtained that, although changing the flame configuration influences several flame characteristics, the trends associated with the effects of governing parameters on the characteristics are nearly independent of the flame configuration.

Book excerpt: In this work, hydrogen assisted (hydrogen enrichment and piloting) swirl stabilized flames are studied experimentally via MIRADAS experiment. First of all, static stability characteristics, such as flame lengths and flame attachment characteristics are studied via CH* chemiluminescence flame images and cases with hydrogen piloting, methane piloting and hydrogen enrichment are compared to the reference case of perfectly premixed methane-air combustion for a wide range of equivalence ratios and bulk velocities. It is found out that hydrogen piloting is the most efficient method to attach the flames and extend operating ranges of the combustion chamber. Next the dynamic stability characteristics of the setup is studied experimentally via stability maps and it is shown that injection of a very small portion of the thermal power worth of hydrogen results in a more stable system and an extension in the stable operating points in the stability maps, meaning safer overall operation. Hydrogen enrichment and methane piloting are also explored, and it is demonstrated that these methods are not effective in changing stability maps, stability maps are not effected. Subsequently, the forced flame responses are studied experimentally and it is shown that hydrogen piloting and hydrogen enrichment causes a drop in the global time delay of the flame transfer function. With hydrogen piloting, there is a global drop in the flame transfer function gain, however for hydrogen enriched cases, the gain is increased. For methane piloted cases, there is a global reduction in the flame transfer function gain, however the time delay is not affected. Consequently, to explore why and how the global flame transfer function is changed with different injection strategies, forced flame images are studied. It is shown that the changes in flame transfer function is caused by the competition behavior between the local heat release responses for hydrogen piloted cases. Simply put, there is a phase difference between the local responses near the injection tube and the flame edges, causing a "pull-back" effect, which in turn causes a drop in the flame transfer function gain. Next the effect of different injection strategies on the pollutant emissions are investigated. It is demonstrated that adding hydrogen, in pilot injection or hydrogen enrichment configuration, causes a drop in mathrm{CO_2} emissions for the same thermal power. Piloting strategies cause a slight increase in NOx emissions, however results show that an optimization is possible to obtain flames that are stable, low mathrm{CO_2} and low NOx. Finally, LES calculations and their comparisons with experimental results are presented. The capability of LES calculations in predicting flame responses is demonstrated and it is shown that the flame responses originate from the interactions of the vortices that are formed as a result of acoustic pulsations and the flames. Flames are wrapped around these vortices which increase the flame surface area. Further down the forcing cycle, the rolled up portions of the flames start touching the combustion chamber walls and gets quenched which causes a loss of flame surface area. These changes in flame surface area result in a fluctuating heat release rate, consisting the flame response.

Book excerpt: The mixing of fuel and air has a significant impact on overall operation efficiency and emissions performance of combustion systems, especially in lean combustion applications. As a result, developing an understanding of the processes associated with the fuel/air mixing is important. In parallel with the evolution of lean combustion, a new generation of fuels is emerging as an alternative to conventional fuels. Thus, it is desirable to study the mixing properties of different fuels from conventional resources, such as methane, as well as from renewable resources, such as hydrogen. One tool that is available to study mixing in complex (e.g., turbulent and elliptic) flows is computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In the present work, mixing of hydrogen and methane into air, for example, is simulated using various CFD approaches. Fuel is injected either co-flowing to the air flow ("axial injection") or perpendicular to the air flow ("radial injection"). The quality of the simulations is evaluated by comparing the numerical results with experimental measurements. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons are used to evaluate the relative accuracy of different CFD approaches to simulate the mixing characteristics. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulent models are utilized to model all the cases as steady turbulent models. Moreover, unsteady turbulent models, such as Unsteady RANS, and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) are used to provide information about unsteady features in selected cases. The sensitivity of numerical predictions to different RANS turbulence models as well as to different turbulent Schmidt numbers are explored. The results indicate more sensitivity to turbulence models for radial injection configurations. However, for the axial configuration, more sensitivity to Sct is observed. In general, the RSM turbulence model with Sct=0.7 provides the most promising predictions for various combination of different fuels and injection types.
