La thèse examine les effets du morphing électroactif hybride. Ce concept consiste en une association de diverses classes d'actionneurs électroactifs opérant à des échelles de temps et de longueur multiples, en accord avec la dynamique du spectre turbulent et dans un contexte de bio-inspiration concernant l'actionnement des ailes, ailerons et plumes de grands oiseaux prédateurs. Le morphing électroactif hybride crée des modifications de la turbulence à de multiples échelles dans les zones cisaillées et le sillage proche et crée l'augmentation des performances aérodynamiques par l'action de mécanismes de rétroaction. La thèse effectue des simulations numériques à nombre de Reynolds élevé autour de configurations de profils d'aile et d'ailes d'avion supercritiques dans les régimes du bas subsonique correspondant aux phases du décollage et atterrissage, et transsonique correspondant au vol de croisière. Toutes les simulations sont effectuées par le code NSMB (Navier Stokes MultiBlock), en utilisant des approches de modélisation de la turbulence efficaces, permettant de prédire en accord avec les expériences physiques, le développement d'instabilités et de structures cohérentes gouvernant la dynamique des écoulements. Dans ce contexte, l'approche « Organized Eddy Simulation » (OES) a été employée et améliorée par des concepts de cascade inverse utilisant de la réinjection de la turbulence dans les zones fortement cisaillées. Cette méthode, basée sur un forçage stochastique des équations de transport turbulent a été étendue dans la présente thèse aux trois dimensions et ses bénéfices ont été quantifiés concernant l'évaluation des efforts aérodynamiques et le développement d'instabilités fluide. Les avantages de cette approche, qui a été introduite par ailleurs au sein de la « Detached Eddy Simulation », ont été étudiés concernant la prédiction du tremblement en régime transsonique et de l'interaction choc-couche limite. Les régimes du bas subsonique concernent les écoulements autour de profils et d'ailes de type A320 en configurations statiques et en morphing et sont étudiés en utilisant l'approche de modélisation OES également. Le morphing de la région proche du bord de fuite à l'aide de faibles déformations et de vibrations de fréquences dans le rang de 100-400 Hz a été étudié en synergie avec des résultats expérimentaux du projet Européen H2020 N° 723402 SMS : « Smart Moprhing and Sensing for Aeronautical configurations ». A l'aide d'une étude paramétrique détaillée, il a été mis en évidence que des combinaisons optimales de fréquence-amplitude de ces actionnements fournissent une augmentation drastique de la finesse aérodynamique. Ces effets ont été obtenus à l'aide de manipulation de la dynamique des interfaces « Turbulent - Non Turbulent » (TNT) et des interactions avec les interfaces « Turbulent- Turbulent » (TT). De plus, cette thèse a développé un modèle structural efficace permettant le contrôle de forme par des Alliages à Mémoire de Forme (AMF). Ces actionneurs permettent d'obtenir de grandes déformations à de basses fréquences en appliquant une grande cambrure de l'aile pour augmenter la portance et pour adapter la forme de l'aile aux différentes sollicitations aérodynamiques. La présente thèse propose un modèle efficace pour obtenir des formes-ciblées de configurations aérodynamiques utilisant des AMF embarqués. Un nouvel algorithme robuste a été développé et validé pour prédire la réponse non-linéaire de l'interaction AMF-structure. Cet algorithme a été couplé avec une méthode de prédiction de la structure et des paramètres opérationnels optimaux pour le design, fournissant ainsi des architectures de morphing plus performantes et réduisant l'impact environnemental.

Book excerpt: Lifting bodies, such as blades, wings, and hydrofoils, may be subject to instabilities, such as divergence, flutter, and resonance, which can fatigue the structure and reduce its operational longevity. Therefore, it is important to understand and accurately predict the response and stability of such structures to ensure their structural safety and facilitate the design and optimization of new and existing concepts. The interaction between fluid and structure, known as Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI), should be taken into account in the study of elastic response and instabilities of flexible lifting bodies. In such applications, the fluid flow and structure are coupled through the loads exerted on the structure by the fluid, which results in the the structural deformation. In some FSI applications, fluid and solid can be coupled by one-way (unidirectional) load transfer. In this case, a given field may strongly affect, but not be affected significantly by the other field. However, for some practical engineering applications, in which there is a strong and potentially nonlinear relationship between the fields, one-way coupling is not adequate. In such cases, the structural displacement caused by the flow further enhances the fluid forces in such a way that both fluid and structure are interacting in a complex feedback fashion. Hence, two-way FSI analysis needs to be undertaken. Light-weight, flexible structures are widely used through recent advances in material technologies to improve hydrodynamic and structural performance compared to heavy and stiff materials. This project seeks to gain greater insight into the hydroelastic response of highly flexible hydrofoils, which undergo large deformation when subjected to high hydrodynamic loadings. This increases the necessity of incorporating strongly-coupled two-way FSI methodology in addition to the numerical challenges in mesh deformation modelling. At moderate to high Reynolds numbers, the development of turbulent flow around a hydrofoil causes a momentum transfer normal to the wall and allows the flow to re-attach, and form a Laminar Separation Bubble (LSB). Flow separation, formation of trailing edge vortices, location and movement of the LSB affect the hydrodynamic loading and structural vibration. Hence, an advanced numerical technique with sufficiently high spatial accuracy is incorporated in the present study to precisely capture these local interface phenomena, such as the onset and the amount of flow separation. The interaction between the foil and surrounding flow involve significant three-dimensional features that will not be neglected in the present study.

Book excerpt: In this paper we study the LES method with dynamic procedure in the context of conductive flows subject to an applied external magnetic field at low magnetic Reynolds number R(sub m). These kind of flows are encountered in many industrial applications. For example, in the steel industry, applied magnetic fields can be used to damp turbulence in the casting process. In nuclear fusion devices (Tokamaks), liquid-lithium flows are used as coolant blankets and interact with the surrounding magnetic field that drives and confines the fusion plasma. Also, in experimental facilities investigating the dynamo effect, the flow consists of liquid-sodium for which the Prandtl number and, as a consequence, the magnetic Reynolds number is low. Our attention is focused here on the case of homogeneous (initially isotropic) decaying turbulence. The numerical simulations performed mimic the thought experiment described in Moffatt in which an initially homogeneous isotropic conductive flow is suddenly subjected to an applied magnetic field and freely decays without any forcing. Note that this flow was first studied numerically by Schumann. It is well known that in that case, extra damping of turbulence occurs due to the Joule effect and that the flow tends to become progressively independent of the coordinate along the direction of the magnetic field. Our comparison of filtered direct numerical simulation (DNS) predictions and LES predictions show that the dynamic Smagorinsky model enables one to capture successfully the flow with LES, and that it automatically incorporates the effect of the magnetic field on the turbulence. Our paper is organized as follows. In the next section we summarize the LES approach in the case of MHD turbulence at low R(sub m) and recall the definition of the dynamic Smagorinsky model. In Sec. 3 we describe the parameters of the numerical experiments performed and the code used. Section 4 is devoted to the comparison of filtered DNS results and LES results. C

This method was validated with classical and academic test-cases. Then we studied the influence of the confinement with walls in a 2D configuration for decaying MHD and we found four decaying regimes which depend on the initial conditions. We also discussed the phenomenon of spontaneous rotation, or spin-up, in 2D non-axisymmetric geometries, originally discovered in hydrodynamic flows. We showed the influence of the Reynolds number and the magnetic pressure on this phenomenon. Finally, simulations of MHD flows in wall bounded three-dimensional domains were addressed. The first results concerning the simulation of decaying MHD turbulence in a cylinder imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions for both the velocity and the magnetic field showed the validity of the code and suggest good prospects for developing more physically justified boundary conditions for the magnetic field.

Book excerpt: The problems of external flows around aircraft, internal flows inside propulsions units and also related problems like structural designs all require more and more accurate solutions while incorporating state of the art features involving more and more complex geometries and loadings. This is steadily becoming beyond the reach of analytical solution methods and thus necessitates the use of new computational methods. One of these is the Finite Element Method. The Finite Element Method was initially developed and used by Zienkiewicz for elasticity problems and is at the height of its development at the time of writing. The method is being studied theoretically as well as being applied to a broader and broader range of problems; its applications are found in solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, electromagnetics, etc. Some FORTRAN programs have been written in order to apply the Finite Element Method to the solution for low Reynolds number, incompressible flows around a Joukowski aerofoil, with emphasis on the generation of grids. These programs serve as evaluation tools and as a first step in a planned longer-term study of the Finite Element Method as applied to fluid flow problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1999 through 2001 the University of Michigan carried out an experimental study of the high Reynolds number turbulent flow over a hydrofoil. The high Reynolds number foil, or Hifoil project was carried out in three phases at the U.S. Navy's William B. Morgan Large Cavitation Channel (LCC), the world's largest variable pressure recirculating water tunnel. Several standard flow measurements were made over the course of this project, including surface static pressure field measurements. Static pressure was measured through the use of surface static pressure taps drilled into the foil model at various chordwise and spanwise locations. Pressure data was collected by a custom designed and built static pressure acquisition system, which could automate the process if so desired. The foil model was a modified NACA 16 shape with a chord of 7 feet and a span of 10 ft. The baseline foil was tested at 0, - 1 and + 1 degrees angle of attack measure relative to the foil's flat pressure side. Additional data was collected on the foil with a modified trailing edge shape again at 0 degrees angle of attack. Data was collected at flow speeds ranging from 1.5 to 18.3 m/s and at temperatures ranging from 22 to 40 deg C (70 to 104 deg F), resulting in a chord based Reynolds number range of 3 to 60 million. The Reynolds number range extends from the existing model scale up to full scale for some naval applications. Data is presented here in the form of normalized nondimensional pressure as a function of chordwise location represented in percentage of chord at all the various geometric and flow speed test conditions. In addition a numeric integration of the pressure curves was performed to calculate the pressure lift generated by the foil at the various test conditions. This data is also presented in the form of lift coefficient as a function of foil configuration and Reynolds number.
