This book was released on 1983 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new coordinate and variable transformation for the two-dimensional boundary layer equations is presented. The normal coordinate is stretched with a scaling length determined by the local solution. The boundary layer thickness is then essentially constant in computational space for the most types of flows, including separation bubbles and rapidly growing turbulent boundary layers. Similarity solutions can be obtained for all wedge flows. Two finite difference schemes are presented: the Shifted Box Scheme and the Double-Shifted Box Scheme. Both schemes are more resistant to streamwise profile oscillations than the standard Keller's Box Scheme. All governing equations, including the turbulence model, are solved simultaneously as a fully coupled system. This is faster and more robust than conventional weak-coupling iteration schemes. The solution scheme implementation presented makes no restriction on one boundary condition. Any point or integral quantity such as edge velocity, wall shear, displacement thickness, or some functional relationship between two or more of such quantities can be prescribed. The behavior of the boundary layer solution near separation is investigated. It is demonstrated that non-unique solutions always exist whenever an adverse pressure gradient is specified. This bifurcation of the solution is responsible for inability of calculations with prescribed pressure or edge velocity to be carried past separation.

This book was released on 1968 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical solutions of the boundary layer equations with arbitrary initial profiles and an assigned constant wall shear stress were carried out. Results show that after an initial non-similar flow all initial profiles for incompressible flow asymptotically approach similar profiles corresponding exactly to the Falkner-Skan similar solution. The streamwise distance required for any arbitrary initial profile to approach this similar profile depends upon the extent of departure of the initial profile from the beta = 1/2 similar profile (the larger the difference the longer the distance). For compressible boundary layers, constant wall shear stress solutions give rise to asymptotic locally similar profiles, with no particular similar profile having been determined in the present analysis. Book excerpt: A numerical solution of the compressible boundary layer equations was developed for flows over either two-dimensional or axisymmetric surfaces. The solution method is capable of solving for boundary layer parameters in either laminar or turbulent flows. In the case of turbulent flow, closure is achieved by use of a two-layered eddy viscosity model. The boundary layer equations are solved by a numerical marching procedure. A Mangler-Levy-Lees transformation of independent variables is used to improve the efficiency of the numerical solution. The transformed boundary layer equations are then linearized by a three point finite difference scheme. The linearized equations are solved by a matrix solution technique. Comparisons of computed boundary layer parameters with experimentally determined parameters were made for both laminar and turbulent flows over axisymmetric bodies. The comparisons show the numerical solution to be very accurate. (Author).
