Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We apply the Plane Wave Discontinuous Galerkin (PWDG) method to study the direct scattering of acoustic waves from impenetrable obstacles. In the first part of the thesis we consider the full exterior scattering problem with smooth boundaries. This problem is modeled by the Helmholtz equation in the unbounded domain exterior to the scatterer. To compute the scattered field, an artificial boundary is introduced to reduce the infinite domain to a finite computational domain. We then apply Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) and Neumann-to-Dirichlet (NtD) boundary conditions on a circular artificial boundary. By using asymptotic properties of Hankel functions, we are able to prove wavenumber explicit L2-norm error estimates for the DtN-PWDG method on quasi-uniform meshes. Numerical experiments indicate that the accuracy of the PWDG method for the scattering problem is improved by the use of DtN and NtD boundary conditions. The second part of the thesis concerns acoustic scattering from domains with corners. In such domains, quasi-uniform meshes are not efficient so we derive error indicators to drive the selective refinement of the mesh in an adaptive algorithm. We prove a posteriori L2-norm error estimates for the Helmholtz equation with impedance boundary conditions on the artificial boundary. Numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed indicators. This adaptive strategy is compatible with the DtN and NtD truncation of the infinite domain problem and the combination would significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of PWDG simulations.

This is done by coupling recently developed high order local absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) with finite difference methods for the Helmholtz equation. These ABCs are based on exact representations of the outgoing waves by means of farfield expansions. The finite difference methods, which are constructed from a deferred-correction (DC) technique, approximate the Helmholtz equation and the ABCs to any desired order. As a result, high order numerical methods with an overall order of convergence equal to the order of the DC schemes are obtained. A detailed construction of these DC finite difference schemes is presented. Details and results from an extension to heterogeneous media are also included. Additionally, a rigorous proof of the consistency of the DC schemes with the Helmholtz equation and the ABCs in polar coordinates is also given. The results of several numerical experiments corroborate the high order convergence of the proposed method. A novel local high order ABC for elastic waves based on farfield expansions is constructed and preliminary results applying it to elastic scattering problems are presented.

Book excerpt: The propagation of acoustic and electromagnetic waves in stratified media is a subject that has profound implications in many areas of applied physics and in engineering, just to mention a few, in ocean acoustics, integrated optics, and wave guides. See for example Tolstoy and Clay 1966, Marcuse 1974, and Brekhovskikh 1980. As is well known, stratified media, that is to say media whose physical properties depend on a single coordinate, can produce guided waves that propagate in directions orthogonal to that of stratification, in addition to the free waves that propagate as in homogeneous media. When the stratified media are perturbed, that is to say when locally the physical properties of the media depend upon all of the coordinates, the free and guided waves are no longer solutions to the appropriate wave equations, and this leads to a rich pattern of wave propagation that involves the scattering of the free and guided waves among each other, and with the perturbation. These phenomena have many implications in applied physics and engineering, such as in the transmission and reflexion of guided waves by the perturbation, interference between guided waves, and energy losses in open wave guides due to radiation. The subject matter of this monograph is the study of these phenomena.

Book excerpt: This Proceedings contains the edited papers presented at the annual Review of Progress in Quantitative NDE held at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Aug. 7-12, 1983. In it, papers have been arranged topically by chapters and subsections rather than by order of presentation at the Review. The editors believe that this format is preferable as a reference volume. Thus, the Proceedings contains nine chapters and subsections which provide broad coverage of topics of current interest in NDE research and development. The Review was sponsored by the Center for Advanced NDE, Ames Laboratory of the U. S. Department of Energy, in cooperation with the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, USDOE, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Materials Laboratory of the Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories, and the Naval Sea Systems Command. Approximately 275 attendees representing various government agencies, industry, and academia participated in the technical presentations, poster sessions, and discussions. This Review, possibly the most comprehensive annual symposium in NDE, emphasizes both basic research and early engineering applications; it provides a valuable forum for the transfer of technical information. Para graphs given below provide a brief summary of the contents of the Proceedings. Chapter 1 consists of four papers that discuss elements of NDE Reliability and contains the keynote paper given by Dr. J. M. Coffey of the NDT Applications Centre, Central Electricity Generating Board, Manchester, England. In his paper, Dr.

Book excerpt: Scattering from fluid domains with dissimilar material properties is of foundational importance to many application areas in acoustics and elastic wave propagation. For example, biomedical ultrasound and sonar both make use of acoustic field scattering for localization, imaging, and identification of objects. The theory of acoustic scattering from fluid and elastic materials is well established and has been validated with numerical and physical experiments. Recent work in acoustic and elastic meta-materials has shown that materials with subwavelength asymmetry have a macroscopic response characterized by a scalar bulk modulus, a tensorial mass density, and a vector that couples the pressure-strain relationship with the momentum density-particle velocity relationship. This type of constitutive behavior is the acoustic analogue of bianisotropy in electromagnetism and has come to be known as Willis coupling in acknowledgement of the first description of this material response by J.R. Willis [Willis, Wave Motion 3, pp. 111 (1981)]. We present a theoretical description of acoustic scattering of a plane wave incident upon a cylinder exhibiting weak Willis coupling using a perturbation approach. The scattered field depends upon the orientation of the Willis coupling vector and is therefore anisotropic despite the symmetry of the geometry. The analytical model is validated through comparison with a finite element-based numerical experiment where the bianisotropic material response is introduced using a weak formulation of the constitutive equations.
