This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the date of this writing, there is no question that the boundary element method has emerged as one of the major revolutions on the engineering science of computational mechanics. The emergence of the technique from relative obscurity to a cutting edge engineering analysis tool in the short space of basically a ten to fifteen year time span is unparalleled since the advent of the finite element method. At the recent international conference BEM XI, well over one hundred papers were presented and many were pub lished in three hard-bound volumes. The exponential increase in interest in the subject is comparable to that shown in the early days of finite elements. The diversity of appli cations of BEM, the broad base of interested parties, and the ever-increasing presence of the computer as an engineering tool are probably the reasons for the upsurge in pop ularity of BEM among researchers and industrial practitioners. Only in the past few years has the BEM audience become large enough that we have seen the development of specialty books on specific applications of the boundary element method. The present text is one such book. In this work, we have attempted to present a self-contained treatment of the analysis of physical phenomena governed by equations containing biharmonic operators. The biharmonic operator defines a very important class of fourth-order PDE problems which includes deflections of beams and thin plates, and creeping flow of viscous fluids.
Book Synopsis Boundary Element Analysis of Plates and Shells by : Dimitri E. Beskos
Download or read book Boundary Element Analysis of Plates and Shells written by Dimitri E. Beskos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of plates and shells under static and dynamic loads is of greatinterest to scientists and engineers both from the theoretical and the practical viewpoint. The Boun- dary Element Method (BEM) has some distinct advantages over domain techniques such as the Finite Difference Method (FDM) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) for a wide class of structuralanalysis problems. This is the first book to deal specifically with the analysis of plates and shells by the BEM and to cover all aspects of their behaviour, and combi- nes tutorial and state-of-the-art articles on the BEM as ap- plied to plates and shells. It aims to inform scientists and engineers about the use and the advantages of this techni- que, the most recent developments in the field and the per- tinent literature for further study.
Book Synopsis Progress in Boundary Element Methods by : BREBBIA
Download or read book Progress in Boundary Element Methods written by BREBBIA and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A substantial amount of research on Boundary Elements has taken place since publication of the first Volume of this series. Most of the new work has concentrated on the solution of non-linear and time dependent problems and the development of numerical techniques to increase the efficiency of the method. Chapter 1 of this Volume deals with the solution of non-linear potential problems, for which the diffusivity coefficient is a function of the potential and the boundary conditions are also non-linear. The recent research reported here opens the way for the solution of a: large range of non-homogeneous problems by using a simple transformation which linearizes the governing equations and consequently does not require the use of internal cells. Chapter 2 summarizes the main integral equations for the solution of two-and three dimensional scalar wave propagation problems. This is a type of problem that is well suited to boundary elements but generally gives poor results when solved using finite elements. The problem of fracture mechanics is studied in Chapter 3, where the ad vantages of using boundary integral equations are demonstrated. One of the most interesting features of BEM i~ the possibility of describing the problem only as a function of the boundary unknowns, even in the presence of body, centrifugal and temperature induced forces. Chapter 4 explains how this can be done for two-and three-dimensional elastostatic problems.
Book Synopsis Stress Analysis by Boundary Element Methods by : J. Balaš
Download or read book Stress Analysis by Boundary Element Methods written by J. Balaš and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boundary element method is an extremely versatile and powerful tool of computational mechanics which has already become a popular alternative to the well established finite element method. This book presents a comprehensive and up-to-date treatise on the boundary element method (BEM) in its applications to various fields of continuum mechanics such as: elastostatics, elastodynamics, thermoelasticity, micropolar elasticity, elastoplasticity, viscoelasticity, theory of plates and stress analysis by hybrid methods. The fundamental solution of governing differential equations, integral representations of the displacement and temperature fields, regularized integral representations of the stress field and heat flux, boundary integral equations and boundary integro-differential equations are derived. Besides the mathematical foundations of the boundary integral method, the book deals with practical applications of this method. Most of the applications concentrate mainly on the computational problems of fracture mechanics. The method has been found to be very efficient in stress-intensity factor computations. Also included are developments made by the authors in the boundary integral formulation of thermoelasticity, micropolar elasticity, viscoelasticity, plate theory, hybrid method in elasticity and solution of crack problems. The solution of boundary-value problems of thermoelasticity and micropolar thermoelasticity is formulated for the first time as the solution of pure boundary problems. A new unified formulation of general crack problems is presented by integro-differential equations.
Book Synopsis The Boundary Integral Approach to Static and Dynamic Contact Problems by : H. Antes
Download or read book The Boundary Integral Approach to Static and Dynamic Contact Problems written by H. Antes and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fields of boundary integral equations and of inequality problems, or more gen erally, of nonsmooth mechanics, have seen, in a remarkably short time, a considerable development in mathematics and in theoretical and applied mechanics. The engineering sciences have also benefited from these developments in that open problems have been attacked succesfully and entirely new methodologies have been developed. The contact problems of elasticity is a class of problems which has offered many open questions to deal with, both to the research workers working on the theory of boundary integral equations and to those working on the theory of inequality problems. Indeed, the area of static and dynamic contact problems could be considered as the testing workbench of the new developments in both the inequality problems and in the boundary integral equations. This book is a first attempt to formulate and study the boundary integral equations arising in inequality contact problems. The present book is a result of more than two decades of research and teaching activity of the first author on boundary integral equations and, of the second author, on inequality problems, as well as the outgrowth of seminars and courses for a variety of audiences in the Technical University of Aachen, the Aristotle University of Thessa loniki, the Universities of Bochum, of Hamburg and Braunschweig, the Pontificia Univ. Catolica in Rio de Janeiro etc.

Book Synopsis Boundary Integral Equations by : George C. Hsiao
Download or read book Boundary Integral Equations written by George C. Hsiao and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-26 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second edition of the book which has two additional new chapters on Maxwell’s equations as well as a section on properties of solution spaces of Maxwell’s equations and their trace spaces. These two new chapters, which summarize the most up-to-date results in the literature for the Maxwell’s equations, are sufficient enough to serve as a self-contained introductory book on the modern mathematical theory of boundary integral equations in electromagnetics. The book now contains 12 chapters and is divided into two parts. The first six chapters present modern mathematical theory of boundary integral equations that arise in fundamental problems in continuum mechanics and electromagnetics based on the approach of variational formulations of the equations. The second six chapters present an introduction to basic classical theory of the pseudo-differential operators. The aforementioned corresponding boundary integral operators can now be recast as pseudo-differential operators. These serve as concrete examples that illustrate the basic ideas of how one may apply the theory of pseudo-differential operators and their calculus to obtain additional properties for the corresponding boundary integral operators. These two different approaches are complementary to each other. Both serve as the mathematical foundation of the boundary element methods, which have become extremely popular and efficient computational tools for boundary problems in applications. This book contains a wide spectrum of boundary integral equations arising in fundamental problems in continuum mechanics and electromagnetics. The book is a major scholarly contribution to the modern approaches of boundary integral equations, and should be accessible and useful to a large community of advanced graduate students and researchers in mathematics, physics, and engineering.
