Book excerpt: Numerical Prediction of Flow, Heat Transfer, Turbulence and Combustion: Selected Works of Professor D. Brian Spalding focuses on the many contributions of Professor Spalding on thermodynamics. This compilation of his works is done to honor the professor on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Relatively, the works contained in this book are selected to highlight the genius of Professor Spalding in this field of interest. The book presents various research on combustion, heat transfer, turbulence, and flows. His thinking on separated flows paved the way for the multi-dimensional modeling of turbulence. Arguments on the universality of the models of turbulence and the problems that are associated with combustion engineering are clarified. The text notes the importance of combustion science as well as the problems associated with it. Mathematical computations are also presented in determining turbulent flows in different environments, including on curved pipes, curved ducts, and rotating ducts. These calculations are presented to further strengthen the claims of Professor Spalding in this discipline. The book is a great find for those who are interested in studying thermodynamics.

Book excerpt: In this study, a directional-implicit Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)finite difference code is developed so as to simulate the direct and indirect heat removal through conduction and convection processes from the rectangular blocks attached to the lower surface of a narrow- channel geometry. Two dimensional, unsteady, incompressible, laminar form of the Navier -Stokes (N-S) equations are considered. L sing the stream function-vorticity approach, they are discretized via finite difference technique, under the assumption of the Taylor series expansions. The discretized equations than reduced to a three-banded form of a matrix equality ready to be used conjugate solution formulation. In the same manner, two dimensional unsteady' energy· equation discretized with the source term included into three-banded matrix form. Tw-o field equations are solved numerically for various channel-rectangular block geometries so as to study the steady--state heat transfer characteristics inside channel with possible heat generation inside the blocks. It is shown that the numerical model is capable of simulating the main features of the flow- field. Detailed benchmarks of the present numerical model is attempted so as to validate the devoloped algorithm. The streamvise extension of the recirculation zone behind the rectangular block which is a function of the Reynolds number is very well simulated. Furthermore, it was shown that the heat transfer characteritics of the zone agrees well with the experinıental and theoretical observations in the literature. Prepared algorithm is a highly' stable algorithm but show'ing slow convergence to a steady state value. Conjugate solution property of the present approach enables one to study complex thermal characteristics of fluid-solid and solid-solid interactions. Beside the classical boundary conditions of the thermal field, the problem domain is further complicated by the presence of discrete heat sources in the rectangular blocks in form of the infinite small heat generating sheet. Heat generatedat various transfer positions are convected by the fluid downstream. The near wall flow temperature and the Nusselt number distributions over the surface depict the most features of the complex fluid-solid interaction. The steady state temperature inside the blocks and in the substrate are found to be functions of the flow Reynolds number. Prandtl number, heat source position and substrate bottom surface temperature. Due to the heat generation the flow is heated well above its inlet value. This causes continous heat flow from fluid to the lower plate in the recirculating regions of the rectangular blocks and in the cavities where there are more than one obstacle. The present model can simulate the chip cooling problems for integrated circuit components, i.e, chips, on a horizontal printed curcuit board which is containing heat generatin; rectangular blocks attached to a single layer substrate. Results consistency with other studies, which are reported in literature, is discussed.

Book excerpt: This integrated thesis documents a series of complementary numerical investigations aimed at an improved understanding of turbulent flows and heat transfer in a square duct with ribs of different shapes mounted on one wall. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is used to accurately resolve the spatial and temporal scales of the simulated flows. The first DNS investigates the turbulent flow in a ribbed square duct of different blockage ratios. The results are compared with those of a smooth duct flow. It is observed that an augmentation of the blockage ratio concurrently generates stronger turbulent secondary flow motions, which drastically alter the turbulent transport processes between the sidewall and duct center, giving rise to high-degrees of non-equilibrium states. The dynamics of coherent structures are studied by examining characteristics of the instantaneous velocity field, swirling strength, spatial two-point auto-correlations, and velocity spectra. The impact of the blockage ratio on the turbulent heat transfer is investigated in the second numerical study. The results show that owing to the existence of the ribs and confinement of the duct, organized secondary flows appear as large streamwise-elongated vortices, which have profound influences on the transport of momentum and thermal energy. This study also shows that the spatial distribution and magnitude of the drag and heat transfer coefficients are highly sensitive to the rib height. The final study focuses on a comparison of highly-disturbed turbulent flows in a square duct with inclined and V-shaped ribs mounted on one wall. The turbulence field is highly sensitive to not only the rib geometry but also the boundary layers developed over the side and top walls. Owing to the difference in the pattern of the cross-stream secondary flow motions of these two ribbed duct cases, the flow physics in the inclined rib case is significantly different from the V-shaped rib case. It is found that near the leeward and windward faces of the ribs, the mean inclination angle of turbulence structures in the V-shaped rib case is greater than that of the inclined rib case, which subsequently enhances momentum transport between the ribbed bottom wall and the smooth top wall.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying 3-D computer codes to isothermal and combusting two-phase flows is a multi-faceted processes. In the combustion case, this can involve the refinement of models for fuel droplet trajectories, droplet evaporation and radiation heat transfer. Turbulence modelling is also of basic importance. The realisation that many combustion flows do not satisfy the conditions of isotropy demanded by conventional models has stimulated more fundamental approaches to the Reynolds stress description. Since the common objective of such applications is to provide a basis for design, there is need for codes which are versatile, easy to operate, and interactive. This study reports some current progress in these areas. Aspects of the present code are presented including the coupling of flow and droplet motions and the interactive setting up procedure to define an arbitrary geometry. Calculated and measured velocity fields are shown for the isothermal flow in a coaxial dump combustor and results are presented for the combustion case using a baffle stabiliser.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, the effects of computational domain size and radius ratio on fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer in a concentric annular pipe are investigated using direct numerical simulation (DNS). To perform DNS, a new parallel computer code based on the pseudo-spectral method was developed using the FORTRAN 90/95 programing languages and the message passing interface (MPI) libraries. In order to study the effects of computational domain size on the turbulence statistics, twelve test cases of different domain sizes are compared. The effects of radius ratio are investigated through a systematic study based on four radius ratios of a concentric pipe. The characteristics of the velocity and temperature fields are examined at two Reynolds number of Re_(D_h ) =8900$ and 17700. The radius ratio affects the interaction of two boundary layers of the concentric annular pipe and has a significant impact on the turbulent flow structures and dynamics. The characteristics of the flow and temperature fields are investigated in both physical and spectral spaces, which include the analyses of the first- and second-order statistical moments, budget balance of the transport equation of Reynolds stresses, two-point correlation coefficients, and premultiplied spectra of velocity, vorticity, and temperature fluctuations. It is observed that the scales and dynamics of turbulence structures vary with the radius ratio as well as the surface curvature of the concave and convex walls. The characteristic length scales of the turbulence structures are identified through a spectral analysis.

Book excerpt: In 1887, Kelvin posed one of the most discussed scientific questions of the last 100 years - the problem of the division of three-dimensional space into cells of equal volume with minimal area. It has interested mathematicians, physical scientists and biologists ever since and the problem has scientific relevance to foams, emulsions and many other kinds of cells. In the 1990s, a more complex structure was discovered by Robert Phelan and Denis Weaire and it remains the best yet found. This text assesses the various merits of Kelvin's structure and of that discovered by Weaire and Phelan. It also looks at the problem of proof that Weaire's structure having minimal area remains open.
