Book excerpt: We have carried out a number of 2D numerical simulations on an ALE code for shock-tube experiments in which a shock crosses one or more contact discontinuities and, after traveling through a homogeneous medium, reflects off a rigid wall at the end of the shock-tube and re-crosses the contact discontinuity. We have considered two-fluid and three-fluid experiments: the first fluid, which carries the original shock, is air; the other fluids are helium, freon, SF6, or air again. Helium is lighter than air, while freon and SF6 are heavier than air. The interface(s) between the fluids serve as contact discontinuities and are subjected to the original shock, the re-shock, and subsequent rarefactions/compressions. 9 refs., 6 figs.

In turbulent combustion, mixing by molecular transport is an essential process that is not well understood. Because mixing occurs on the smallest length and time scales it is difficult to study experimentally. Instead, we have employed direct numerical simulation of turbulence, initially for a conserved passive scalar in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The Eulerian velocity and scalar fields are calculated from the exact evolution equations, and both Eulerian and Lagrangian statistics are deduced from the computed fields. A particle-tracking scheme, needed to extract Lagrangian information, has been implemented. The testing of a number of such particle tracking schemes has been completed with good results: accurate Lagrangian information can be extracted at a modest computational cost. In order to study processes in stationary turbulence, a forcing algorithm has been implemented. Tests on this scheme are complete, again with good results: the small scales are unaffected by the details of the forcing. Studies have been performed of: the mixing of a passive scalar; Lagrangian velocity, Acceleration and dissipation statistics; and Mixing and combustion problems viewed in terms of surfaces.

Book excerpt: In this volume, compressible turbulent mixing is discussed from the viewpoints of experiment, numerical simulation and theoretical models. The major problem areas include Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities, and multiphase mixing problems. A variety of initial configurations are discussed, including single and multiple mode perturbations and nonlinear geometries in both two and three dimensions. The effects of experimental and numerical artifacts are also considered.

The effective mixing of entrained fluids to a molecular level is a vital part of the dynamics of turbulent flows, especially when combustion is involved. The work has shown the limitations of the steady-state simulations and acknowledged the need of applying high-fidelity unsteady methods for the calculation of flows with pronounced unsteadiness promoted by large-scale coherent structures or other sources.

Book excerpt: Small-scale turbulent flow dynamics is traditionally viewed as universal and as enslaved to that of larger scales. In coarse grained simulation (CGS), large energy-containing structures are resolved, smaller structures are spatially filtered out, and unresolved subgrid scale (SGS) effects are modeled. Coarse Grained Simulation and Turbulent Mixing reviews our understanding of CGS. Beginning with an introduction to the fundamental theory the discussion then moves to the crucial challenges of predictability. Next, it addresses verification and validation, the primary means of assessing accuracy and reliability of numerical simulation. The final part reports on the progress made in addressing difficult non-equilibrium applications of timely current interest involving variable density turbulent mixing. The book will be of fundamental interest to graduate students, research scientists, and professionals involved in the design and analysis of complex turbulent flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the large eddy simulation (LES) approach large-scale energy-containing structures are resolved, smaller (presumably) more isotropic structures are filtered out, and unresolved subgrid effects are modeled. Extensive recent work has demonstrated that predictive simulations of turbulent velocity fields are possible based on subgrid scale modeling implicitly provided by a class of high-resolution finite-volume algorithms. This strategy is called implicit LES. The extension of the approach to the substantially more difficult problem of material mixing IS addressed, and progress in representative shock-driven turbulent mixing studies is reported.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of Richtmyer-Meshkov instability is numerically studied in canonical configuration. The discontinuities in the flow field (such as shock waves, contact surfaces and material interfaces) are captured by using a shock-capturing method coupled with a high-order high-resolution compact differencing scheme. Verification and validation is conducted by simulating 1-D and 2-D canonical test problems and comparing the numerical results with experimental data and previous numerical results. High resolution numerical simulation of the impulsive acceleration of a dense gas curtain in air by a Mach 1.21 planar shock (modeling the experiments by Balakumar et al. PoF 2008) is carried out by solving the 3-D compressible multi-species Navier-Stokes equation coupled with a localized artificial diffusivity method to capture discontinuities in the flow-field. The simulations account for the presence of three species in the flow-field: air, SF6 and acetone (used as a tracer species in the experiments). The reshock process is studied by re-impacting the evolving curtain with a reflected shock wave. Turbulence statistics computed in the flow-field following reshock are reported and compared with experiment where possible. Inertial range scaling, vorticity anisotropy and Reynolds stress development are studied in the reshocked flow. The high resolution data set is used to test certain modeling assumptions appearing in mixing models (BHR model) that have been traditionally used to study variable density flows. Finally preliminary results are shown from a 3-dimensional calculation of a planar shock interacting with a planar perturbed interface between air and SF6.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-dimensional supersonic turbulent mixing layers were produced with a small shock tunnel whose driven section is divided into two parallel chambers. When desired, combustion in the mixing layer was produced by use of oxygen in one stream and an argon-hydrogen mixture in the other. Variation in refractive index through the mixing layer was measured with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and pressures were measured with piezo-electric transducers. From these measurements, freestream conditions could be computed. Approximate temperatures could be deduced directly from the interferograms throughout the mixing layer. A finite difference computer program which solves the turbulent conservation equations in terms of an empirical eddy viscosity model and a simple ignition delay-reaction time model for the chemistry was used to reconstruct the refractive index contours. Such an approach can describe the conditions in the mixing layer to an adequate degree of accuracy. It was found that for nonreacting mixing layers, the growth rates were comparable to those obtained from the literature for incompressible layers, and that the liberation of chemical energy increased mixing rates considerably, at least for the conditions of this experiment. Book excerpt: We have achieved validation in the form of simulation-experiment agreement for Rayleigh-Taylor turbulent mixing rates (known as?) over the past decade. The problem was first posed sixty years ago. Recent improvements in our simulation technology allow sufficient precision to distinguish between mixing rates for different experiments. We explain the sensitivity and non-universality of the mixing rate. These playa role in the difficulties experienced by many others in efforts to compare experiment with simulation. We analyze the role of initial conditions, which were not recorded for the classical experiments of Youngs et al. Reconstructed initial conditions with error bars are given. The time evolution of the long and short wave length portions of the instability are analyzed. We show that long wave length perturbations are strong at t = 0, but are quickly overcome by the rapidly growing short wave length perturbations. These conclusions, based solely on experimental data analysis, are in agreement with results from theoretical bubble merger models and numerical simulation studies but disagree with models based on superposition of modes.
