Book excerpt: Honoring the contributions of one of the field's leading experts, Lu Ting, this indispensable volume contains important new results at the cutting edge of research. A wide variety of significant new analytical and numerical results in critical areas are presented, including point vortex dynamics, superconductor vortices, cavity flows, vortex breakdown, shock/vortex interaction, wake flows, magneto-hydrodynamics, rotary wake flows, and hypersonic vortex phenomena. The book will be invaluable for those interested in the state of the art of vortex dominated flows, both from a theoretical and applied perspective.Professor Lu Ting and Joe Keller have worked together for over 40 years. In their first joint work entitled ?Periodic vibrations of systems governed by nonlinear partial differential equations?, perturbation analysis and bifurcation theory were used to determine the frequencies and modes of vibration of various physical systems. The novelty was the application to partial differential equations of methods which, previously, had been used almost exclusively on ordinary differential equations. Professsor Lu Ting is an expert in both fluid dynamics and the use of matched asymptotic expansions. His physical insight into fluid flows has led the way to finding the appropriate mathematical simplications used in the solutions to many difficult flow problems.

Book excerpt: This monograph provides in-depth analyses of vortex dominated flows via matched and multiscale asymptotics, and demonstrates how insight gained through these analyses can be exploited in the construction of robust, efficient, and accurate numerical techniques. The book explores the dynamics of slender vortex filaments in detail, including fundamental derivations, compressible core structure, weakly non-linear limit regimes, and associated numerical methods. Similarly, the volume covers asymptotic analysis and computational techniques for weakly compressible flows involving vortex-generated sound and thermoacoustics. The book is addressed to both graduate students and researchers.

Book excerpt: Over the last several years, Vorticity Confinement has been shown to be a very efficient method to simulate the vortex-dominated flows over complex configurations. To calculate these flows, no high-order numerical scheme and body conforming grids are required for this method and only a fixed, uniform Cartesian grid is employed. First, an overall description of the original Vorticity Confinement method (VC1) is presented, followed by an introduction of the newly developed Vorticity Confinement method (VC2). The advantage of VC2 over VC1 is the ability to conserve the Momentum. Two different numerical schemes are shown for VC1 and VC2. The one for VC2 is much simpler than that of VC1. Results of VC1 and VC2 for convecting vortices and scalars in 1-D and 2-D will be presented. Numerical results are presented for the three dimensional flow over a surface-mounted cube. Comparisons have been made with experimental and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) data. It is observed that with a coarse uniform Cartesian grid, Vorticity Confinement is able to get results in better agreement with the experimental results than the LES simulation results on a fine grid. This method is shown to be more effective than trying to model and discretize more complex system of equations in the traditional methods, when solving complex high Reynolds number flow problems.

Book excerpt: Many important phenomena in fluid motion are evident in vortex flow, i.e., flows in which vortical structures are significant in determining the whole flow. This book, which consists of lectures given at a NATO ARW held in Grenoble (France) in June 1992, provides an up-to-date account of current research in the study of these phenomena by means of numerical methods and mathematical modelling. Such methods include Eulerian methods (finite difference, spectral and wavelet methods) as well as Lagrangian methods (contour dynamics, vortex methods) and are used to study such topics as 2- or 3-dimensional turbulence, vorticity generation by solid bodies, shear layers and vortex sheets, and vortex reconnection. For researchers and graduate students in computational fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, and applied mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present study, generation of two vortex rings and their cut-and-connect process were numerically simulated by solving three-dimensional and time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations, under conditions similar to the laboratory experiment. In order to explain the mechanism of cut-and-connect, velocity, vorticity, pressure, helicity density and energy dissipation were examined for the flow field of the cut-and-connect of vortex rings. The present study revealed that energy dissipation is an essential process for circulation cancellation during vortex tubes cutting. Based on this energy dissipation mechanism, it is concluded that the cut-and-connect of vortex tubes may occur in the limit of inviscid flows. This conclusion is particularly important to the three-dimensional discrete vortex method for computing high Reynolds number flows. Features of helicity in the three-dimensional flow field of cut-and-connect process of vortex tubes were also investigated. The relation between the helicity density and the energy dissipation function in the three-dimensional flow field was examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vortex-filament method was applied to the simulation of vortex breakdown. The principal vortex region was represented by multiple filaments, and an axial velocity component was induced by a spiral winding of the filaments. First, an accuracy check was performed for a cylindrical swirling flow field that can be simulated to any accuracy by increasing the number of filaments. Second, an axisymmetric-type vortex breakdown was simulated, with experimental data serving asupstream conditions. The calculated axial- and theta-velocity contours show the breakdown of the vortex, including a rapid change in the vortex core, followed axially by a recovery zone and then a second breakdown. When three-dimensional initial data are used the second breakdown appears to be out of the spiral type in correspondence with experimental observations. The present method can easily be used to simulate other types of vortex breakdown or other vortex flows with axial velocity.

Our vortex-in-cell (VIC) method traces the motion of the vortex filaments in the velocity field these filaments create on an Eulerian mesh via the fast integration of a Poisson equation. By incorporating the viscous or subgrid-scale effects into a filtering procedure, the computed scales of motion are assumed to be essentially inviscid. Results on tracing a periodic array of single vortex rings are compared with a Green's function calculation. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a vortex-dominated flow interacts with a sharp density interface, the dynamics are characterized by the interaction of baroclinically generated vorticity with the already existing vorticity field. This can be seen in many natural and technology settings; examples are the interaction of a ship or submarine wake with a thermocline, the collision of a buoyant thermal with a temperature inversion, and the interaction of a vortex flow with a flame front. This problem also serves as a generic model for turbulent mixing and entrainment processes across sharp density interfaces. The interaction between vortices and a free surface, with corresponds to the case where the density jump is very large, has been studied fairly extensively, both experimentally and computationally. By comparison, the literature for the more general case of vortex pairs and rings interacting with sharp density interfaces is relatively sparse. Experiments and numerical studies have been performed, but the numerical simulations were confined primarily to vortex pairs, restricted to the inviscid case, and the effect of density variation modeled under the Boussinesq approximation. The experiments were also confined to the Boussinesq regime. In this paper, we study the motion of a vortex ring in a sharply stratified, viscous fluid via a numerical solution of the full Navier-Stokes equations with finite-amplitude density variation. both Boussinesq and non-Boussinesq flow regimes will be studied, the effect of viscosity on the interaction will be examined, and three-dimensional aspects of the motion will be addressed, such as Widnall instability of the vortex ring and vortex reconnection at the interface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and computational study of the impact of a vortex with a body oriented normal to the vortex axis was performed. Particular focus was placed on understanding characteristics of the secondary vorticity ejected from the body and the interaction of the secondary vorticity with the primary vortex. Since both onset of boundary layer separation and the form of the secondary vorticity structures are sensitive to variation of the velocity normal to the body axis, the effect of normal velocity on vortex-body interaction was carefully examined. The physical features of the flow evolution were categorized in terms of an impact parameter and a thickness parameter, which respectively represent ratios of velocity and length scales associated with the vortex to those associated with the flow in the absence of the vortex. Experiments were performed using a combination of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) flow visualization and particle-image velocimetry (PIV) in a water tank to examine the form of the secondary vorticity structures with both "high" and "low" values of the impact parameter for normal vortex interaction with a circular cylinder and with a thin blade. A new type of Lagrangian vorticity method based on a tetrahedral mesh was developed and applied to compute the secondary vorticity evolution during vortex-cylinder interaction. Computations were also performed for model problems to examine in detail wrapping of a vortex loop around a columnar vortex and impulsive cutting of a columnar vortex with finite axial flow.
