Book excerpt: Abstract: A three-dimensional numerical simulation of the unsteady flow in an under-expanded supersonic rectangular jet has been conducted for the purpose of investigating and analyzing the production and propagation of jet noise. The compressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved using high-order spatial and temporal differencing schemes. The solution method applies linear and nonlinear filtering schemes to produce oscillation-free shocks and discontinuities while minimizing dissipation effects in smooth regions. The solution method also applies nonreflecting boundary conditions to minimize reflections. Characteristic boundary conditions are implemented at the upstream and far-field boundaries and an absorbing buffer zone is added at the outflow boundary. OpenMP shared- memory model was utilized to parallelize the simulation and good parallel performance was achieved. The code was used to conduct a time dependent numerical simulation of an under-expanded supersonic rectangular jet. A comprehensive database of the simulation was generated. The results of the simulation were validated against experimental measurements and show very good agreement. The simulation is shown to resolve critical unsteady flow features of the jet such as vortex shedding, shock-cell structure, shock shear-layer interaction, flapping, and axis-switching. Visualization of the unsteady flow and analysis of the turbulent flow-field shows that the location of axis-switching is immediately downstream of the fourth shock. It is also observed that the location of the dominant screech source is at the third shock. Two-point space-time correlations demonstrate that the convection velocities in the jet shear layer are highly modulated by the presence of shock waves. Spectral analysis show that the simulation predicts, with good accuracy, screech modes frequencies, wavelengths, phase, and amplitudes. Analysis inside the jet shear layer and in the acoustic near-field reveal exact correspondence in frequency and phase between the inner and the outer parts of the screech loop. The simulation also predicts the complex pattern of the near acoustic field associated with screech. The current simulation represents the first successful three- dimensional numerical simulation of an under-expanded supersonic rectangular jet. It also represents a significant contribution towards accurate prediction of noise production and far-field radiation in supersonic jets. The computational tools developed in this study can be used to investigate a wide range of problems related to unsteady flows and aeroacoustics.

Book excerpt: Twin jets emanating from closely spaced nozzles can interact quite unpredictably and give rise to high dynamic pressures in the internozzle region which can result in sonic fatigue of sensitive aircraft equipment. This project studies the interaction between two such jet from nozzles having a single beveled exit geometry. Such nozzles are finding increasing use in modern aircraft due to the thrust vectoring and performance advantages they present. The study begins by using traditional linear spectral analysis techniques to study the coupling mechanism. It goes on to reveal the limitations of such linear techniques for understanding phenomena that are as complex as the one studied in this project and uses non-linear techniques to uncover results that have hitherto gone unreported. It is hoped that the results of these techniques will be of use to nozzle designers as well as to scientists involved in the field of numerical simulation of jet noise so as to provide benchmark data for the validation of their models.

Book excerpt: Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is a high-fidelity approach to the numerical simulation of turbulent flows. Recent developments have shown LES to be able to predict aerodynamic noise generation and propagation as well as the turbulent flow, by means of either a hybrid or a direct approach. This book is based on the results of two French/German research groups working on LES simulations in complex geometries and noise generation in turbulent flows. The results provide insights into modern prediction approaches for turbulent flows and noise generation mechanisms as well as their use for novel noise reduction concepts.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of military jet noise prediction and reduction is an ongoing activity. Supersonic military jets radiate higher noise levels than commercial aircraft and are not subject to noise requirements. The noise generating mechanisms for high-speed jets are not entirely understood, making it difficult to set strict noise standards similar to those imposed for commercial aircraft. However, many noise reduction techniques have been applied to attempt to alleviate environmental and health concerns. Little success has been achieved to date for noise reduction of exhaust jets on supersonic tactical aircraft.A newly developed method involves a system that generates fluidic inserts in a supersonic nozzle flow to produce noise reduction. Numerical simulations have been performed for a military-style basline nozzle and with the noise reduction method of fluidic inserts used at a design Mach number of 1.65 and at various off design conditions. The purpose of the current numerical study is to provide insight for the flow field generated by the fluidic inserts used to reduce supersonic jet noise. The supersonic jet simulations are based on the use of high fidelity meshes combined with advanced CFD technology. Steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations are used to predict the flow field. Noise measurements have been performed experimentally and the results from the numerical simulations provide a correlation between aerodynamic properties and the corresponding noise reduction. The complex nozzle geometry is modeled using both an unstructured mesh and a multiblock structured mesh. The grids are generated by ANSYS ICEM and Gridgen respectively. The numerical simulations are performed using ANSYS CFX and Wind-US. The simulations with Wind-US use the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model, while the simulations with ANSYS CFX use the Menter SST turbulence model. The results from the two flow solvers are compared and provide good agreement. The objective is to simulate a military-style nozzle, which resembles engines of the GE F404 family, with fluidic inserts. The purpose of the fluidic inserts is to alter the flow field similar to that of a hard wall corrugation in order to reduce components of noise radiation. The addition of the fluidic inserts increases the complexity of the flow field for the supersonic jet. The numerical simulations performed help to better distinguish the effects on the flow field due to the fluidic inserts. Preliminary work has been performed on a simpler geometry to provide further insight to the effect of the fluidic inserts on the supersonic jet flow field. These simulations are performed by fluid injection into a supersonic freestream over a flat plate. All numerical simulations used a freestream Mach number of 1.5. The numerical simulations used a wide range of pressure ratios for injecting the fluid into the supersonic freestream. By changing the pressure ratio of the fluid injection, the deflection of the freestream flow was better understood. Simulations on a full three dimensional nozzle with fluidic inserts were performed with conditions based on the preliminary studies. Parameters such as total pressure and total temperature provide a representation of the fluidic insert shape. Other integrated flow properties at the nozzle exit such as streamwise vorticity and pressure differential were used to correlate with the noise reduction seen in the experiments.

Book excerpt: An acoustic prediction capability for supersonic axisymmetric jets was developed on the basis of OVERFLOW Navier-Stokes CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code of NASA Langley Research Center. Reynolds-averaged turbulent stresses in the flow field are modeled with the aid of Spalart-Allmaras one-equation turbulence model. Appropriate acoustic and outflow boundary conditions were implemented to compute time-dependent acoustic pressure in the nonlinear source-field. Based on the specification of acoustic pressure, its temporal and normal derivatives on the Kirchhoff surface, the near-field and the far-field sound pressure levels are computed via Kirchhoff surface integral, with the Kirchhoff surface chosen to enclose the nonlinear sound source region described by the CFD code. The methods are validated by a comparison of the predictions of sound pressure levels with the available data for an axisymmetric turbulent supersonic (Mach 2) perfectly expanded jet. Book excerpt: Research has been undertaken to achieve an improved understanding of physical phenomena present when a supersonic flow undergoes chemical reaction. A detailed understanding of supersonic reacting flows is necessary to successfully develop advanced propulsion systems now planned for use late in this century and beyond. In order to explore such flows, a study was begun to create appropriate physical models for describing supersonic combustion, and to develop accurate and efficient numerical techniques for solving the governing equations that result from these models. From this work, two computer programs were written to study reacting flows. Both programs were constructed to consider the multicomponent diffusion and convection of important chemical species, the finite rate reaction of these species, and the resulting interaction of the fluid mechanics and the chemistry. The first program employed a finite difference scheme for integrating the governing equations, whereas the second used a hybrid Chebyshev pseudospectral technique for improved accuracy. Drummond, J.
