Book excerpt: This paper describes numerical modeling of hydrodynamic circulation and cohesive sediment transport in Hartwell Lake, South Carolina/Georgia, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) hydropower and flood control reservoir. A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "Superfund" site is located on a tributary to the lake because of high concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the lake sediments. The primary objective of this study involves prediction of depositional zones for sediments transported within the reservoir.

This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference for engineers, and graduate students covers sediment transport and morphodynamics modelling in nearshore environments. It presents the fundamentals required for understanding the physics and for setting up numerical models. This book covers hydrodynamics of estuarine and coastal environments, properties of seafloor and estuarine composition, and hydroenvironmental interactions; emphasising the inter-relations of small- and large-scale processes, and short- and large-evolution timescales. The focus is, principally, on the application of shallow-water theory, but some surface wave models, and coupling of shallow-water models with surface waves is also discussed to some extent. The guidance on running regional models and the case studies presented are directed to managed realignment, coastal protection, climate change impacts, and offshore renewables. Key features: Gives a balanced review of this rich interdisciplinary area Bridges practical engineering and research Offers both large- and small-scale application Suits graduate students and researchers as well as consulting engineers Vanesa Magar is a senior researcher and associate professor at the Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE) in Baja California, Mexico. She was formerly a researcher and then a lecturer at Plymouth University, UK.

Book Synopsis Hydrodynamic and Sediment Transport Study of Sudbury River, Massachusetts by :
Download or read book Hydrodynamic and Sediment Transport Study of Sudbury River, Massachusetts written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical models were used to determine the transport potential for contaminated sediments in two reaches of the Sudbury River near Framingham, Massachusetts. These two reaches are comprised of two small (narrow) reservoirs, one discharging into the other. They are essentially riverine in nature at flows characteristic of this study. A computational hydrodynamic model (RMA2) of the reaches was developed. Several known worst case flood conditions were simulated and the model verified. A sediment transport model (SED2D) was then run using the hydrodynamic responses as the driving force to erode, transport, and deposit sediments. The results of the simulation indicate a potential movement of contaminated sediments in the constricted and shallow areas of the reservoirs for the Standard Project Flood (SPF) conditions. For the lower flow test conditions, 3-year, 14-year, and 100-year flood frequencies, the numerical model computer simulations predicted movement of only negligible amounts of contaminated sediments. Only at the highest flow conditions (SPF) was the movement of sediment considered significant.

Book Synopsis Modelling and Analysis of Fine Sediment Transport in Wave-Current Bottom Boundary Layer by : Liqin Zuo

This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution and utilization of estuarine and coastal regions are greatly restricted by sediment problems. This thesis aims to better understand fine sediment transport under combined action of waves and currents, especially in the wave-current bottom boundary layer (BBL). Field observations, experimental data analysis, theoretical analysis and numerical models are employed. Silt-dominated sediments are sensitive to flow dynamics and the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) increase rapidly under strong flow dynamics. This research unveils several fundamental aspects of silty sediment, i.e., the criterion of the incipient motion, the SSC profiles and their phase-averaged parameterization in wave-dominated conditions. An expression for sediment incipient motion is proposed for silt-sand sediment under combined wave and current conditions. A process based intra-wave 1DV model for flow-sediment dynamics near the bed is developed in combined wave-current conditions. The high concentration layer (HCL) was simulated and sensitivity analysis was carried out by the 1DV model on factors that impact the SSC in the HCL. Finally, based on the 1DV model, the formulations of the mean SSC profile of silt-sand sediments in wave conditions were proposed. The developed approaches are expected to be applied in engineering practice and further simulation.

Book Synopsis Modelling of Flows and Sediment Through Hydraulic Structures by : Shervin Faghihirad
Download or read book Modelling of Flows and Sediment Through Hydraulic Structures written by Shervin Faghihirad and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central concern of the book is to study flows and sediment phenomena through hydraulic structures in a regulated reservoir. The flow patterns in and around most hydraulic structures are complex, three-dimensional, and highly turbulent. For these reasons, in order to understand the impact of hydraulic structures on the hydrodynamic, sediment transport processes and morphological changes in regulated reservoirs it is often necessary to investigate these processes in three dimensions. In design a real and complex water regulated reservoir both physical and numerical models are applied. In the numerical sections, explain the governing equations of the hydrodynamic (including turbulence), sediment transport and morphodynamic process, respectively. Besides, mathematical solutions for the different equations are given in detail in a separate chapter. In next chapters, the capability of the numerical model is evaluated with two sets of experimental data. Also, one chapter presents the application of the numerical model to the experiment explained in physical modelling part and comparisons made between the physical and numerical model results. Final chapter summarises the main findings.
