The two major goals of the study are to expand the body of knowledge about nearshore processes on barred beaches gaining a better understanding of the physical mechanisms affecting bar migration events and to enhance the numerical model in order to accomplish realistic simulations of bar migration events on storm time scales. The numerical model is used to study the effect of physical processes on the hydrodynamics and morphodynamics in the nearshore environment. The numerical model system consists of a linear spectral refraction-diffraction model, REF/DIF S, a quasi-3D nearshore circulation module, SHORECIRC, energetics-based sediment transport models, and a morphological evolution model. A laboratory experiment with an offshore bar migration case followed by an onshore bar migration case is used for modeling purposes and verifications. A number of enhancements are made to the wave and circulation modules of the numerical model system specifically for simulations on barred beaches. The model modifications and enhancements are: a combined breaking wave parameter with a spatial variation in the wave model, a method accounting for breaking wave persistence in the wave model, a method accounting for the new breaker roller lag in the wave model, the dynamic pressure component in the radiation stress forcing, a roller contribution with different depth variation options for the short wave forcing in the circulation model, wave height instead of water depth as the turbulent length scale in the eddy viscosity calculations in the circulation model, and a slope term for the default sediment transport formula. The effect of surface shape parameter and the roller face angle on radiation stress and mean water level predictions are investigated. In reality, the organized wave energy is transferred to roller development over a transition distance and the roller does not immediately contribute to the radiation stresses; therefore, showing the importance of the roller lag mechanism for mean water level predictions. The cross-shore variation of the vertical momentum balance is studied to observe the variation of forcing agents of the undertow current. The cross-shore pressure gradient is the most dominant forcing term affecting the depth structure of the undertow current. The effect of different depth variations of the roller contribution to the short wave forcing on the undertow current is investigated. The mechanism accounting for breaking wave persistence and the mechanism accounting for the roller lag are shown to be important for predictions of the undertow currents on barred beaches. The skewed wave orbital velocities are introduced to the linear wave model by an empirical parametrization method and are found to contribute strongly to the onshore bar migration. The enhancements made to the wave dissipation and roller are found to significantly affect the predicted migration of the bar as well as the maintainance of the trough.

Waves can also create quasi-steady currents, and the waves can be breaking or non-breaking, greatly changing potential for sediment transport. These flows act in arbitrary combinations with different magnitudes and directions to mobilize and transport sediment. Reliable prediction of morphology change requires accurate predictive formulas for sediment transport rates that smoothly match in the various regimes of water motion. This report describes results of a research effort conducted to develop unified sediment transport rate predictive formulas for application in the coastal inlet environment. The formulas were calibrated with a wide range of available measurements compiled from the laboratory and field and then implemented in the CIRP's Coastal Modeling System. Emphasis of the study was on reliable predictions over a wide range of input conditions. All relevant physical processes were incorporated to obtain greatest generality, including: (1) bed load and suspended load, (2) waves and currents, (3) breaking and non-breaking waves, (4) bottom slope, (5) initiation of motion, (6) asymmetric wave velocity, and (7) arbitrary angle between waves and current. A large database on sediment transport measurements made in the laboratory and the field was compiled to test different aspects of the formulation over the widest possible range of conditions. Other phenomena or mechanisms may also be of importance, such as the phase lag between water and sediment motion or the influence of bed forms. Book excerpt: Cross-shore bathymetric evolution in the nearshore zone often leads to threatening consequences such as beach erosion and shoreline retreat that concern the coastal community. A new, comprehensive cross-shore morphodynamic model was developed that can be used to describe and predict these phenomena. The study included both physical and numerical models that were designed to focus on the influence of sediment size characteristics on the cross-shore sediment transport process. For a profile equilibrium timescale, three types of beach profiles with different sediment mixtures were simulated in a small-scale, random-wave flume laboratory using erosive, storm, and accretive wave conditions. Dynamic relationships between the sediment grain sorting and beach profile changes were found to be evident as size-graded sediment fractions tended to relocate to different energetic zones along the cross-shore profiles. Existing phase-averaged wave and circulation models were utilized together with several new intra-wave modules for predicting important hydrodynamic parameters that were validated using the experimental data. A novel, multi-size sediment transport model was formulated to compute individual transport rates of size-graded sediment fractions while accounting for their interaction and non-linear size dependencies. The model was coupled with a new grain sorting model that resolves cross-shore grain sorting and vertical grain lamination. Compared to a traditional modeling approach, the new comprehensive model proved to offer superior modeling accuracy for both profile evolution and sediment grain size change. The use of the model is most advantageous for a condition with intensive grain sorting, a common scenario on a natural beach profile. Equilibrium beach profile is also better simulated by the model as size-graded fractions are predicted to relocate to different zones where they could withstand local hydrodynamics. Other new components that also help improve the modeling capability include the terms for wave-breaking and bed-slope effects, wave-crest sediment flux, and acceleration-induced bottom-shear stress. Besides superior profile modeling accuracy, sediment size characteristics and their spatial and temporal variations are also a useful set of information provided by the new model.

The model contains a new formulation for calculating bedload transport. Two laboratory experiments were conducted with the goal of reproducing on a small scale, erosive and accretive events similar to those found in nature. These experimental results as well as results obtained in a large scale laboratory experiment, were used to test the validity of the new transport model. One additional experiment was conducted to analyze the temporal and spatial variability of suspension events under breaking waves.

Book excerpt: River plumes are critical to the exchange of suspended particulate matter (SPM) between nearshore regions and shelf seas. These exchanges contribute fundamentally to the health and function of the coastal ecosystem, and have important implications for the overall sediment and biomass budgets. The physical processes that determine these exchanges depend on the dynamical characteristics of the river plume, which are largely affected by the freshwater input, water depth and the tidal flow, among many other factors. Here, we present field measurements and numerical modeling of hydrodynamics and sediment transport in order to investigate the dynamics of cross-shore exchange processes along a shallow river plume system. Measurements from moorings and bottom frames along the Rhine region of freshwater influence (ROFI) are used to evaluate the importance of baroclinic (stratified) and barotropic (unstratified) dynamics on the cross-shore transport of fine sediments, in a site located 10 km north of the river mouth. These measurements allowed for the evaluation of sediment transport dynamics over a wide range of stratification, wind, wave and tidal conditions. Both barotropic and baroclinic processes are found to be relevant for the cross-shore transport of fines at depth. The observations suggest that wind and wave-driven transport during storms tends to move fine sediment offshore, while calmer, more stratified conditions move it back onshore. Data collected during an intense 2-day storm are used to document the occurrence of a wave-supported gravity flow (WSGF) in a shallow inner shelf site along the Rhine ROFI. These observations are the first to document a WSGF on a predominantly sandy environment; previous observations had been restricted to muddy shelf deposits with very fine particle size distributions. The observed WSGF dynamics support previous studies regarding the use of a friction-buoyancy balance, and suggest that the same balance can be used on sandy seabeds. The offshore transport associated with the WSGF was much higher than other modes of transport, such as the suspended transport in the upper water column or the bedload, highlighting the importance of these events to cross-shelf transport and morphological evolution on inner-shelf regions. The occurrence of a WSGF under conditions unique from previous observations suggest that WSGF may occur in a much wider range of shelf locations than previously thought. In the Rhine, the tidal flow interacts with the cross-shore density gradients to generate tidal straining. The influence of tidal straining in the generation of a turbidity maximum zone (TMZ) along the Rhine ROFI is investigated using idealized numerical simulations. Tidal straining leads to cross-shore sediment convergence and the formation of a nearshore TMZ, that is detached from the coastline and confined to the near-bed region. Subtidal landward sediment fluxes are created by asymmetries in vertical mixing between the stratifying and de-stratifying phases of the tidal cycle. Model simulations show the development of a coastal TMZ for a wide range of horizontal density gradients, latitudes and settling velocity of bed sediments, suggesting that these phenomena are not limited to the Rhine ROFI. A parameter space for the occurrence of tidal straining and a coastal turbidity maximum is proposed in terms of a horizontal Richardson number and a Stokes number. Lastly, near-bed turbulence and bedform measurements are used to investigate the influence of bed roughness in the estimation of bed shear stress under the influence of large waves and currents. Direct measurements of the near-bed Reynolds stresses are compared to bed stress estimates obtained from a 1D bottom boundary layer model that accounts for wave-current interaction. Model-derived bed stresses compare well with measurements when field measurements of bedform dimensions are incorporated into the model calculations. The use of standard bedform predictors based on bulk wave properties results in a severe overestimation of the bed stresses at this particular site. We find that the combination of a time-dependent bedform evolution model and a 1D wave-current boundary layer model provides a simple approach that allows improved bed stress estimates in cases where bedform data is not available. Estimates of bed stresses and measured vertical turbulent sediment fluxes are then incorporated into a linear erosion formulation to obtain field-based estimates of the critical stress for erosion and resuspension constant.

During this experiment, two sandbars were generated. One of the bar was generated by the action of undertow, and sediment moved offshore. The other bar was generated by the shoreward movement of sediment coming from the first bar. The principal mechanism responsible for shoreward movement is associated with effects of velocity asymmetry. Analysis of bathymetric surveys and suspended sediment concentration data reveals that suspended load contributed to a large extent to the formation of the first bar. Bed load was also important, and was moving in the same direction as suspended load. For the second bar, shoreward sediment movement occurred as bedload. Suspended load was moving in the opposite direction as bed load. This difference in sediment movement is explained by the predominance of the undertow in the suspended sediment flux. Two models were tested to reproduce the observed sediment transport, a wave-averaged (energetics) model and a wave-resolved model. After proper calibration, both models yielded satisfactory results. Calibration efforts highlighted the need for robust models of sediment pickup functions and sediment eddy diffusivity. They also showed the need for a deterministic undertow models. Formulations of the undertow are presented. These formulations are valid for all relative water depths, and include mean current advective terms. These formulations show that the forcing of the undertow is depth-uniform, assuming linear water wave theory. The model is tested against four datasets to evaluate the possibility of a deterministic model. Although a constant eddy viscosity would yield such a model, no universal parametrization could be determined.
