Book excerpt: Increasing demand of global energy and limited conventional resources force the petroleum industry to shift their focus towards the low permeability reservoirs such as shale or tight rock reservoir. Multi-fractured horizontal wells have economically unlocked the massive hydrocarbon resources from unconventional reservoirs. Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing create a complex fracture network that could enhance reservoir contact area to achieve economic production rates. In this study, we compute the transient response in a segment of a hydraulically fractured horizontal well using a triple-porosity model. Impacts of capillary discontinuity (fracture face-effect) and some limitations in analytical models such as sequential flow, single-phase flow and fully-connected symmetric fractures are investigated. We find that the uncertainty in model history-matched parameters and assumptions associated with analytical models could potentially over- or under-estimate production by up to 30%. History-matching with analytical models alone and the assumption of uniformly-spaced fracture stages would tend to overestimate long-term production forecast. In contrast, the assumption of no solution gas in tight oil reservoir leads to underestimation of reservoir properties such as length of fracture and permeability. Moreover, the simulated production data indicates that fracture face-effect results in rapid production decline. Lower capillary contrast between fracture and matrix results in less water blockage and higher production.

Production is enhanced significantly if hydraulic fractures can connect to regions with enhanced permeability due to the presence of micro (and induced) fractures. However, less than 50% of fracturing fluids are typically recovered. This study models the mechanisms of water loss and retention in fracture-matrix system. The effects of capillarity and geomechanics are systematically investigated, and the time scale of water imbibition under different reservoir conditions is tested. During the shut-in (soaking) and flow-back periods, the fracture conductivity decreases as effective stress increases due to imbibition. Previous works have addressed fracture closure during the production phase; however, the coupling of imbibition due to multiphase flow and stress-dependent fracture properties during shut-in is less understood. Numerical simulation results indicate the circumstances under which this phenomenon might be beneficial or detrimental to subsequent on tight oil production. A series of mechanistic simulation models consisting of both hydraulic fractures and stochastically distributed micro fractures are constructed to simulate fluid distribution during shut-in and flow-back. Three systems: matrix, hydraulic fracture and micro fractures are explicitly represented in the computational domain. Fluid loss and retention mechanisms are systematically investigated in this study by subjecting mechanistic model to different reservoir conditions. Water imbibition into the matrix would help to displace hydrocarbons into nearby micro and hydraulic fractures, and this process could lead to an increase in initial rate. Although other water loss mechanisms including water loss in desiccated matrix and water trapping in induced micro fractures were proposed in literature, detailed understanding of the roles of water trapping in these systems is still lacking. Impacts of secondary fracture distributions and properties, matrix permeability, multiphase flow functions, wettability, initial saturation, water injection rate and shut-in duration on fluid retention and the associated time scales are assessed. Increase in short-term oil production as a result of imbibition could be counteracted by the reduction in flow capability due to fracture closure. Therefore, the coupling of stress-dependent fracture conductivity and imbibition are studied next. Our results indicate that fracture compaction can enhance imbibition and water loss, which in turn leads to further reduction in fracture pressure and conductivity. Spatial variability in micro-fracture properties is also modeled probabilistically to investigate whether it is possible for fracturing fluid to be trapped in the micro fractures, or conversely, the micro fractures could provide alternate pathways for fluids to access the hydraulic fracture systems. This work presents a quantitative study of the controlling factors of water retention due to fluid-rock properties and geomechanics. It investigates the roles of multi-scale fractures in flow-back behavior and ensuing recovery performance. The results highlight 1) the crucial interplay between shut-in duration and properties of connected fractures in short- and long-term production performances; 2) the critical interaction between imbibition and geomechanics in short- and long-term production performances. The results would have considerable impacts on understanding and improving current industry practice on fracturing design and assessment of stimulated reservoir volume.

Owing to the disparity in the density of natural fractures in addition to the disparate in-situ stress conditions in these kinds of formations, microseismic fracture mapping has shown that hydraulic fracture treatments develop a range of large-scale fracture networks in the shale plays. In this thesis, an approach is presented, where the fracture networks approximated with microseismic mapping are integrated with a commercial numerical production simulator that discretely models the network structure in both vertical and horizontal wells. A novel approach for reservoir simulation is used, where porosity (instead of permeability) is used as a scaling parameter for the fracture width. Two different fracture geometries have been broadly proposed for a multi stage horizontal well, orthogonal and transverse. The orthogonal pattern represents a complex network with cross cutting fractures orthogonal to each other; whereas transverse pattern maps uninterrupted fractures achieving maximum depth of penetration into the reservoir. The response for a single-stage fracture is further investigated by comparing the propagation of the stage to be dendritic versus planar. A dendritic propagation is bifurcation of the hydraulic fracture due to intersection with the natural fracture (failure along the plane of weakness). The impact of fracture spacing to optimize these fracture geometries is studied. A systematic optimization for designing the fracture length and width is also presented. The simulation is motivated by the oil window of Eagle Ford shale formation and the results of this work illustrate how different fracture network geometries impact well performance, which is critical for improving future horizontal well completions and fracturing strategies in low permeability shale and tight oil reservoirs. A rate transient analysis (RTA) technique employing a rate normalized pressure (RNP) vs. superposition time function (STF) plot is used for the linear flow analysis. The parameters that influence linear flow are analytically derived. It is found that picking a straight line on this curve can lead to erroneous results because multiple solutions exist. A new technique for linear flow analysis is used. The ratio of derivative of inverse production and derivative of square root time is plotted against square root time and the constant derivative region is seen to be indicative of linear flow. The analysis is found to be robust because different simulation cases are modeled and permeability and fracture half-length are estimated.

Book excerpt: Recent developments in bottomhole data acquisition techniques, such as distributed temperature sensing systems (DTS), have brought attention to the potential increase of information that can be obtained from temperature data. Studies have shown the application of temperature surveys to estimate flowrate profiles, resolve the kind of damage around the well, and improve the robustness of the history matching, among others. Nonetheless, Temperature Transient Analysis (TTA) is not a mature technique and its capabilities have not been explored fully yet. In order to investigate the application temperature analysis to the hydraulic fracturing problem, in addition to pressure analysis, a numerical model was developed to calculate pressure and temperature responses. Regarding the fracture and reservoir fluid flow, a general approach can be adopted, where the formation permeability and fracture characteristics dictate how the fluids flow during and after fracture growth. We developed a comprehensive model, which accounts for the pressure effect on the temperature response, as well as a dynamic fracture that grows and eventually is allowed to close during falloff. In this work we analyzed the temperature and pressure responses during and immediately after hydraulic fracturing in order to improve our knowledge of this complicated physical problem. Based on this study, we can better understand not only the fracture properties, but also the reservoir itself. In addition, sensitivity analysis shows how reservoir permeability can impact final fracturing performance, as well as pressure and temperature responses. The developed model was also applied to simulate minifrac analysis, and a field example is presented that shows a good agreement with the simulated behavior during fracture closure. One of the main contributions of this research is related to the creation of multiple fractures along a horizontal well. This type of well and completion technique have become the key factors for success in development of unconventional resources. Both sequential and simultaneous fracture growth was studied. The presence of reservoir permeability heterogeneity was investigated and the capability of temperature data to identify the existence of such reservoir structure was explored. Capabilities and limitations of information carried by temperature data are presented through different geometry analyses. Also related to horizontal multifractured wells, a case was considered in which one of the fractures interconnects different zones vertically. This study is motivated by microseismic evidence of activity captured out of the target reservoir location. The temperature data analysis during the beginning of production life of the well was shown to be very effective to identify the existence of such interconnection. The difference in temperature due to geothermal gradient allows a very clear temperature signature, where the pressure analysis would not reveal the connection.

The numerical simulator is validated by comparing results to known analytical solution for radial flow, existing models of productivity for vertical well intersected by vertical fracture, and also with published tables of shape factors. Numerical simulation is a powerful tool to predict well performance. The complexities of well-fracture configurations can be modeled in a truly 3-dimensional system and the pressure and productivity responses for all of the flow regimes can be computed efficiently, enabling optimization of the well-fracture system.
