Book excerpt: A numerical investigation was carried out to solve the full three-dimensional governing Navier-Stokes equations for steady laminar flow with heat transfer. The flow regime was considered to be hydrodynamically fully developed but thermally developing (also referred to as the classical Graetz problem). Both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids (described by a power law model) were analyzed. A circular-segmented duct cross section was chosen for the computational work. An algebraically generated computational grid was used that was orthogonal and uniform. All the dependent variables were stored in a non-staggered manner. The numerical work was based on the finite difference techniques using second order accurate discretization. Two commonly used thermal boundary conditions; constant wall temperature (T boundary condition) and constant wall heat flux (H1 boundary condition) were examined. For each of the above boundary conditions, analyses were carried out considering the flat wall to be adiabatic. For the case concerning Newtonian fluids, numerical solutions were obtained for different segment angles () for each boundary condition. The non-Newtonian fluids were analyzed by varying the flow behavior index (n) from zero to one to cover the spectrum of shear-thinning fluids. Heating of non-Newtonian fluids is of particular importance to food processing systems. However, excessive pumping demand precludes development of turbulence in tubular arrangements. So laminar flow prevails in heat transfer equipment handling non-Newtonian materials. A finite difference model was developed to simulate various scenarios of flow behavior index and segment angles. It is shown that the Nusselt number distribution along the walls is affected appreciably by the variation of the power law index as also by the segment angle of the duct. Results are presented and discussed for a range of power law indices and segment angles for the various boundary conditions. It was observed that increase in flow behavior index produces a lower convective heat transfer co-efficient. The concomitant friction factor also reduces as is shown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laminar Flow Forced Convection in Ducts is a sourcebook for compact heat exchanger analytical data. This book describes the analytical solutions for laminar fluid flow and forced convection heat transfer in circular and noncircular pipes, including applicable differential equations and boundary conditions involving velocity and temperature problems of fluid flow. The book also discusses fluid flow—how much power is required to pump fluids through the heat exchanger, as well as the heat transfer—the determination of q" distribution, and the temperature of fluid and walls. The text also analyzes the coolant or heat transfer fluid flows in a nuclear power reactor composed of a bundle of circular section fuel rods located inside a round tube. R.A. Axford addresses fluid flow and heat transfers results for the rod bundle geometry in "Heat Transfer in Rod Bundles." The book also provides an overview and guidelines that can be used for the designer and the applied mathematician. This book is suitable for engineers working in electronics, aerospace, instrumentation, and biomechanics that use cooling or heating exchanges or solar collection systems.

Book excerpt: This book sets out to provide a guide, with examples, for those who wish to make predictions about the mechanical and thermal behaviour of non-Newtonian materials in engineering and processing technology. After an introductory survey of the field and a review of basic continuum mechanics, the radical differences between elongational and shear behaviour are shown. Two chapters, one based on a continuum approach and the other using microstructural approaches, lead to useful mathematical desriptions of materials for engineering applications. As examples of nearly-viscometric and nearly-elongational flows, there is a discussion of lubrication and related shearing flows, and fibre- spinning and film-blowing respectively. A long chapter is devoted to the important new field of computational rheology, and this is followed by chapters on stability and turbulence and the all-important temperature effects in flow. This new edition contains much new material not available in book form elsewhere-for example wall slip, suspension rheology, computational rheology and new results in stability theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the gap between the theoretical work of the rheologist, and the practical needs of those who have to design and operate the systems in which these materials are handled or processed. It is an established and important reference for senior level mechanical engineers, chemical and process engineers, as well as any engineer or scientist who needs to study or work with these fluids, including pharmaceutical engineers, mineral processing engineers, medical researchers, water and civil engineers. This new edition covers a considerably broader range of topics than its predecessor, including computational fluid dynamics modelling techniques, liquid/solid flows and applications to areas such as food processing, among others. * Written by two of the world's leading experts, this is the only dedicated non-Newtonian flow reference in print. * Since first publication significant advances have been made in almost all areas covered in this book, which are incorporated in the new edition, including developments in CFD and computational techniques, velocity profiles in pipes, liquid/solid flows and applications to food processing, and new heat/mass transfer methods and models. * Covers both basic rheology and the fluid mechanics of NN fluids ? a truly self-contained reference for anyone studying or working with the processing and handling of fluids
