It is the cleanest burning fuel with water as the only by-product of the combustion process. Nevertheless, the low energy density per volume of hydrogen requires highly pressurized tanks to store a reasonable amount of energy. Highly pressurized storage tanks increase the risk of tank valve failure and hydrogen release into atmosphere. In this study, two approaches are developed to investigate sudden hydrogen release. In the first approach, an analytical method is used to analyze the time histories of stagnation properties inside the chamber and sonic properties at the throat. In the second approach, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is conducted using Ansys CFX solver. Unsteady 3D Navier-Stokes equations along with an additional transport equation are the governing equations of the flow. This CFD analysis is second order accurate in time and space. The SST k-} turbulence model is employed to study the turbulent properties of the flow. Peng-Robinson real gas EOS is used for the accurate prediction of the hydrogen properties. A fully structured high quality mesh is constructed with.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is investigating the turbulence behavior of highly under expanded hydrogen jet based on a 3D Navier-Stokes parallel solver and an extra transport equation for the hydrogen concentration. The solver uses an implicit conservative scheme on unstructured tetrahedral. The discretization exploits finite volumes and finite element with a second order of accurate flux calculation and time discretization. This work presents the extension of the code to simulate hydrogen jets based on Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model for turbulence while considering the real gas behavior. The developed code is equipped with a dynamic wiggle detector to reduce the contribution of the upwinding part in the flux calculation because upwind methodology adds undesired artificial viscosity to the solution. For validation, the developed code is used to simulate a subsonic hydrogen jet. Considering similar studies among literature, good agreement is observed. Afterward, this tool is employed to numerically investigate a 70 MPa hydrogen jet release into ambient air. The turbulence effects in the principal and lateral jet direction are studied. During these simulations, the performance and stability of the developed numerical tool for high pressure ratio is reported.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the hypersonic flight regime, the flow is turbulent by its nature. Skin friction is greatly increased due to additional turbulent stresses caused by eddy structures in the flow. While skin friction drag accounts for the majority of total drag loss of hypersonic vehicles, reducing skin friction becomes crucial to improve performance. Research shows that combustion of low-density gases in the boundary layer results in reduction of skin friction drag. An analysis of predicting the reduction of skin friction coefficient by combustion of H2 is carried out by Stalker. This analysis is based on the semi-empirical formula of Van Driest for predicting cf for a turbulent flat plate. This thesis aims to validate the results of both analyzes by CFD simulations and provide numerical data for combustion of turbulent boundary layer. A Matlab code is written for both Van Driests theory and Stalkers analysis to solve the equations for the flow conditions input. The analytical data is extracted for Ma=5. ANSYS Fluent simulations are performed with the same flow conditions as given in the code. The analytical data is compared with the numerical results and validated. Different turbulence models are compared for their near-wall modelling performance. Different injection conditions for H2 and the effect on the skin friction reduction efficiency is investigated.*****In the hypersonic flight regime, the flow is turbulent by its nature.
