Book excerpt: Aerodynamics is a science that improves the ability to understand theoretical basics and apply fundamental physics in real-life problems. The study of the motion of air, both externally over an airplane wing and internally over a scramjet engine intake, has acknowledged the significance of studying both incompressible and compressible flow aerodynamics. The Handbook of Research on Aspects and Applications of Incompressible and Compressible Aerodynamics discusses all aspects of aerodynamics from application to theory. It further presents the equations and mathematical models used to describe and characterize flow fields as well as their thermodynamic aspects and applications. Covering topics such as airplane configurations, hypersonic vehicles, and the parametric effect of roughness, this premier reference source is an essential resource for engineers, scientists, students and educators of higher education, military experts, libraries, government officials, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: The present chapter deals with heat transfer analysis around unspiked and spiked bodies at high speeds. A spike attached to a blunt-nosed body drastically alters its flowfield and influences the aerodynamic heating in a high speed flow. The effect of spike length, shape and spike-nose configuration is numerically studied at zero angle of incidence. The numerical analysis describes overall flowfield features over without and with forward facing spike attached to a blunt body at high speed flow. The shock stand-off distance, sonic line, stagnation point velocity gradient and stagnation point heat flux are analyzed and compared with different aerodisk configurations. It is found that the hemispherical aerodisk experiences high wall heat flux as compared to the flat-faced aerodisk. Numerical and experimental studies reveal that the wall heat flux levels are decreased in the presence of the spikes and aerospike as compared to without attached spiked to the blunt-nose basic configuration.

Book excerpt: Some sixty years after the experimental flights of the North American X-15 hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft, sustained hypervelocity travel is still the next frontier in high-speed transportation. Today, there is much excitement and interest regarding hypersonic vehicles. In fact, many aerospace agencies, large industries, and several start-ups are involved in design activities and experimental campaigns both in wind tunnels and in-flight with full-scale experimental flying test beds and prototypes to make hypersonic travel almost as easy and convenient as airliner travel. Achieving this goal will radically revolutionize the future of civil transportation. This book contains valuable contributions that focus on various design issues related to hypersonic aircraft.

Book excerpt: Measurements of average heat-transfer rates to blunt-nosed, axisymmetric, cold-walled bodies in a low-density, hypervelocity wind tunnel are given. Stream density was such that Reynolds and Knudsen numbers, based on nose radius and conditions immediately behind the bow shock, varied from 5 to 20 and 0.11 to 0.056, respectively. Thus, scaling on the basis of Knudsen number, these conditions may be said to simulate a body of one-foot nose radius at as much as 315,500-ft altitude. Heat-transfer rates are discussed in relation to the flow model successfully used in the past for studies of flows of high Reynolds number. In this context, it was found that measured heat-transfer rates to hemispheres below shock-layer Reynolds numbers of 20 exhibited a decreasing nondimensionalized rate relative to that estimated by methods appropriate to high Reynolds number conditions. This behavior is in accord with various applicable theories. Rates for the flat-faced bodies showed no tendency to decrease, and they were somewhat higher than predicted by theories for high Reynolds numbers.

Book excerpt: Fluid Dynamics Transactions, Volume 1 is a compilation of papers presented at the Fifth Symposium on Fluid Dynamics held in Poland from August 26 to September 2, 1961. The symposium provided a forum for discussing developments in fluid dynamics based on the following topics: mathematical methods, hypersonic flow, rarefied gas dynamics, and magnetohydrodynamics. This volume is comprised of 26 chapters and begins by presenting equations for gas dynamics and highlighting some of applications of the general results. The discussion then turns to Cauchy's problem for the compressible flow of the simple wave type; the use of exact numerical methods for the solution of boundary layer problems; and the effect of surface catalytic efficiency on stagnation point heat transfer. A geometric method of classifying solutions of gas dynamics using certain space and the time-space Lie transformation groups is described. Subsequent chapters explore supersonic flow past blunt bodies; application of the Monte Carlo method to the analysis of rarefied gas flows; and fluid-fluid displacement in a porous medium. This book will be a useful resource for engineers and other scientists interested in fluid dynamics.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Equilibrium temperatures and heat-transfer coefficients for a hemispherical nose have been measured for Mach numbers from 1.62 to 3.04. Heat transfer to the surface of the hemisphere was presented as Stanton number against Reynolds number for various surface heating conditions. Heat transfer at the stagnation point has been measured and correlated with theory. Transition from a laminar to a turbulent boundary layer was obtained at Reynolds numbers of approximately 1 x 106 corresponding to a region on the body located between 45© and 60© from the stagnation point.
