Book excerpt: An experimental investigation has been carried out on the flow transitions around a smooth circular cylinder in the initial stage of the critical Reynolds number region, where drag coefficient starts to decrease. In this Reynolds number region, intermitent reattachment of the separated boundary layer was found, while only initial separation position excursion was observed in the subcritical region. Large spanwise variations in the surface pressure and wake velocity observed in the first critical subregion were associated with local wake width pulsations caused by spanwise phase variations in the unsteady flow reattachment.

Book excerpt: An accurate description of the flow field about a cylinder is found possible with a semi-analytical solution of the full Navier-Stokes equations. The method of series truncation is employed to reduce the governing partial differential equations of motion to a system of ordinary differential equations which can be integrated numerically. This method, which has been applied to the hypersonic blunt-body problem by previous investigators with great success, is essentially a successive-approximation procedure which treats an elliptic partial differential equation as if it were parabolic or hyperbolic. The dependent variable is expanded in one co-ordinate, and backward influence in the resultant system of ordinary differential equations is prevented by series curtailment. Results are given for Reynolds numbers between 0.4 and 10.0 (based on diameter); however, the method can be applied to both higher and lower Reynolds numbers without modification. An accurate prediction of the Reynolds number at which separation first occurs behind the circular cylinder is made; this separation Reynolds number is found to be 5.75. Over the entire Reynolds-number range investigated, characteristic flow parameters such as the drag coefficient, pressure coefficient, standing-eddy length, and streamline pattern compare favorably with available experimental data and numerical-solution results. It is concluded that the semi-analytical method of series truncation permits accurate determination of the flow field about a circular cylinder at moderate Reynolds numbers without resorting either to full-numerical solution or to experiment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recently reported phenomenon of asymmetric flow separation form a circular cylinder in the critical Reynolds number regime has been confirmed in a water-tunnel experiment. For the first time, an attempt was made to visualize the wake of the cylinder during the transition from subcritical to critical flow and to correlate the visualizations with lift and drag measurements. The occurrence of the dominant asymmetric-flow state was quite repeatable, both when increasing and decreasing the Reynolds number, resulting in a mean lift coefficient of C sub l approx = to 1.2 and a shift in the angle of the wake by about 12 deg. A distinctive step change in the drag and shedding frequency was also found to occur. A hysteresis was confirmed to exist in this region as the Reynolds number was cycled over the transition range. Both boundaries of the asymmetry appear to be supercritical bifurcations in the flow. The asymmetry was normally steady in the mean; however, there were instances when the direction of the asymmetry reversed and remained so for the duration of the Reynolds number sweep through this transition region. A second asymmetry was observed at a higher Reynolds number; however the mean lift coefficient was much lower, and the direction of the asymmetry was not observed to reverse. Introducing a small local disturbance into the boundary layer was found to prevent the critical asymmetry from developing along the entire span of the cylinder. (Author).

Book excerpt: Road transports are responsible for almost 18 % of the greenhouse gas emission in Europe and are today the leading cause of air pollution in cities. Aerodynamic resistance has a significant effect on fuel consumption and hence the emission of vehicles. For electric vehicles, emissions are not affected by the aerodynamics as such but instead have a significant effect on the effective range of the vehicle. In 2017, a new measurement procedure was introduced, Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), for measuring emissions, fuel consumption, and range. This procedure includes a new test cycle with increased average driving speed compared to the former procedure, which thereby increases the importance of the aerodynamic resistance, as it drastically increases with speed. A second effect is that the exact car configuration sold to the customer needs to be certified in terms of fuel consumption and emissions. The result is that every possible combination of optional extras, which might affect the aerodynamic resistance, needs to be aerodynamically analyzed and possibly improved. From 2021, the European Commission will introduce stricter emission regulations for new passenger cars, with the fleet-wide average lowered to 95 grams CO2=km, which puts an even higher demand on achieving efficient aerodynamics. Virtual development of the aerodynamics of road vehicles is today used to a great extent, using Computational Fluid Dynamics, as it enables faster and cheaper development. However, achieving high accuracy for the prediction of the flow field and aerodynamic forces is challenging, especially given the complexity of both the vehicle geometry in itself and the surrounding flow field. Even for a simplified generic bluff body, accurately predicting the flow field and aerodynamic forces is a challenge. The main reason for this challenge of achieving results with high accuracy is the prediction of the complex behavior of turbulence. Scale-resolving simulation (SRS) methods, such as Large Eddy Simulation (LES), where most of the turbulent structures are resolved has in many studies shown high accuracy but unfortunately to a very high computational cost. It is primarily the small turbulent structures within the near-wall region that requires a _ne resolution in both space (the mesh) and in time. This fine resolution is the reason for the very high computational cost and makes LES unfeasible for practical use in industrial aerodynamic development at present and in the near future. By modeling the turbulent structures within the near-wall region using a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model, and resolving the turbulence outside the region with a LES model, a coarser resolution is possible to use, resulting in significantly lower computational cost. Which used RANS model is of high importance, and especially how much turbulent viscosity the model generates, as too high values can result in suppression of the resolved turbulence. The transitioning between the RANS and LES regions have a significant effect on the results. Faster transition enables more resolved turbulence, favorable for higher accuracy, but needs to be balanced with sufficient shielding of the RANS region. If resolving the turbulence occurs within the near-wall region, and the mesh is not sufficiently fine, it can result in poor accuracy. By increasing the time-step size and disregarding best-practice guides, the computational cost can be significantly reduced. The accuracy is reasonably insensitive to the larger time step sizes until a certain degree, thereby enabling computationally cheaper SRS to achieve high accuracy of aerodynamic predictions needed to meet present and future emission regulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a concise and comprehensive review of the progress made during the past two decades on vortex induced vibration (VIV) of mostly circular cylindrical structures subjected to steady uniform flow. The critical elements of the evolution of the ideas, theoretical insights, experimental methods, and numerical models are traced systematically; the strengths and weaknesses of the current state of the understanding of the complex fluid/structure interaction are discussed in some detail. Finally, some suggestions are made for further research on VIV. The organization of the paper is given at the end of the next section.
