The uplift capacity of fastened roof panels has been investigated using experimental tests and numerical models, where monotonic uniform static pressures are often applied to the roof panel models. The verification is needed for the adequacy of using static uniformly distributed pressure representing the wind load. Moreover, the uncertainty of nail withdrawal behaviour has not been included in existing numerical models, and the effect due to construction errors has not been addressed rationally. A nonlinear Finite Element model is developed in this study to incorporate the nail withdrawal uncertainty in terms of maximum withdrawal force, initial stiffness, proportional limit, and the displacement at maximum force of the nail withdrawal behaviour. This model is used to investigate the statistical characteristics of the panel uplift capacity. The effect of spatial varying wind load is discussed by using the pressure coefficient obtained from wind tunnel model test at the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel at the University of Western Ontario. Furthermore, the impact of construction error is investigated, in terms of missing nail effects, with first-hand survey information. The detailed survey was carried out at the IRLBH (The Insurance Research Lab for Better Homes) facility to inspect the quality of construction, specifically for the statistical information of missing nails on roof panels. Finally, the evaluated statistical characterization of panel uplift capacity is used for the reliability analysis of a typical panel considering or ignoring the missing nail effects. Both code specified pressure-gust coefficient from NBCC (2005) and the peak pressure coefficients obtained from wind tunnel test are used. Results suggested that the nonlinear pushover analysis using the proposed nonlinear Finite Element model is adequate for estimating the panel uplift capacity. A more stringent fastening schedule with a spacing of 150 mm for the edges and intermediate supports is suggested for the construction of light frame wood houses.

Book excerpt: A new generation of built-up roofs, known as Adhesive Applied Roofing Systems (AARS), is gaining popularity in North America for low slope application. AARS use no fasteners for components' attachment and all components (e.g., insulation board, cover board, and membranes) are integrated by application of adhesives. Since there are no metal fasteners, AARS can offer advantages of reduction in moisture migration and thermal bridging. Moisture in the roof envelope can lead generally to material deterioration, structural integrity problems, and the growth of mould. Even though AARS are in commercial use, there is no existing test standard to quantify their wind uplift performance. A new project, "Development of Wind Uplift Standard for Adhesive Applied Low Slope Roofing Systems," has been initiated in collaboration with industries, university, and the Canadian Government. The project has three major tasks: experimental investigation, formulation of a numerical model, and development of wind design guide and standard. Task 1 completes preliminary investigations by constructing eight mock-ups. All mock-ups had steel deck and polyisocyanurate insulation and varied in adhesives (type, quantity, and application method), cover boards, and membranes. Mock-ups were subjected to both static and dynamic wind loading conditions. Experimental data showed similarity in failure modes and variations in wind uplift ratings. Data show that among the mockups, the weakest link varied depending on the type of adhesives used and component arrangements. This paper presents and discusses the data from this ongoing experimental investigation.

Book excerpt: A series of static tests was performed on three types of light gauge steel roofing sheets to investigate effects of sheeting profiles on roofing structural behaviour under simulated wind uplift. The considered sheeting profiles were arc-tangent, trapezoidal and ribbed, and an alternate (or equivalent alternate) sheeting crest fastening system was adopted. Different roofing spans and sheeting thicknesses were included in the tests, and the effect of cyclone washers on static performance of the roofing sheets was estimated. The experimental results show that the roof sheeting behaviour under wind uplift was greatly dependent on the sheeting profiles. The shape and height of screw fastened crests affected limit values of initial failure or ultimate strength of the roofing sheets. The use of cyclone washers reduced local plastic deformation around the screw fasteners at the central support and, in general, increased the slope of load-deflection curves and failure strength. Increasing of roofing span slightly reduced the limit values of reaction force per fastener, but the allowable wind pressure still should be decreased. The use of thicker roofing sheets enhanced the roofing static failure strength and sometimes changed the roofing failure modes. The midspan load method which has been used in roof sheeting tests was also examined in this project. The measured load-fastener reaction force curves showed that two-span continuous simply supported beam assumption was reasonable in most cases. However, during large cross-sectional distortion or large local plastic deformation, such assumption was not satisfactory. The experimental results obtained by using two types of midspan loading pads indicated that the effect of loading pad surface on initial failure strength of the roofing sheets was considerable.

Book excerpt: This thesis is concerned with the wind-induced pressure distribution acting on air permeable, double-layer roof systems placed on low-rise buildings. Because of the pressure transmission into the cavity between layers, the pressure difference in the double-layer systems differs significantly from that in a single layer. The interior pressures (in the cavity between layers) are highly correlated with external pressures at the openings on the external surface of the outer layer and thereby, the net wind load for the design of the outer layer is considerably reduced by the pressure equalization between the external and internal surfaces of the outer layer. Examples of the outer layer in practice are loose-laid roof pavers and solar panel arrays on roofs, and rainscreen walls. The objective of this thesis is to characterize and model how the cavity pressures between layers are related to the external pressures and the outer layer and cavity geometries. First, experimental studies were conducted to investigate the detailed cavity pressure distributions, the correlation with external pressures and effects of geometric parameters within the double-layer system. Wind tunnel experimental data on a model of a low-rise building in an open country terrain were used and in total, 39 configurations consisting of six different heights of the panels above the roof surface (H which is the gap between layers), six different gaps between panels (G) and three additional configurations with a larger panel size (L) were examined. It was found in these experiments that the pressure distributions on the internal surface of panels are significantly affected by the geometric parameters. An analytical model was developed to simulate one-dimensional pressure distributions in the cavity, given external pressure data and the geometric parameters. The model was derived considering the pressure drops associated with the flow through the gaps between panels, which is like an orifice flow, and the cavity flow between parallel plates. Thus, the model uses two primary equations: the unsteady discharge equation and the equation for unsteady flow between two parallel plates. The model accounts for several geometric parameters including the gap (G) between the panels, the height (H) of the cavity between the layers, the length (L) of the panels and the thickness (lo) of the panels, as well as the loss coefficients for the orifice and cavity flows. The proposed model is able to capture the fluctuations of cavity pressures and a good agreement is found between the numerical and experimental results for the mean, RMS and peak coefficients, to a great extent, when spanwise-averaged external pressure coefficients are used as input. The analytical model was further validated with wind tunnel test data on a more practical problem which consists of 12 rows of photovoltaic panels placed within all roof zones, from the separation region, the reattachment point, up to the leeward region of the roof. The model captures fluctuations of the cavity pressure, although there are slight differences between the numerical and experimental data, in particular, on panels at the leading edge and in the reattachment regions. Lastly, the thesis discusses how the analytical model can be used as a tool to design compartments for such air permeable, double-layer systems.

Through a North American roofing consortium (Special Interest Group for Dynamic Evaluation of Roofing Systems?SIGDERS) the National Research Council Canada fabricated a facility to evaluate roof assemblies under simultaneous wind and thermal effects. The overall objective of this paper is to present the commissioning process of the facility based on experimental investigations that were carried out on a single-ply roofing system with a PVC membrane. For this study, roofing system responses were measured under simulated simultaneous wind and heat/cold conditions. A systematic attempt also was made to quantify the system response and to characterize the membrane properties. This was performed on a cold-conditioned system as well as by subjecting the membrane samples to the same cold-conditioning program in a laboratory freezer. Membrane samples were characterized by mechanical and chemical methods. Comparison of laboratory-conditioned membranes and wind-tested systems revealed the effects of cold conditioning and wind loading. Neither the wind uplift nor the mechanical properties (tensile breaking strength, elongation at break, tear strength, and seam strength) nor the chemical properties (glass transition temperature and weight loss) were affected by the selected cold conditioning. Based on these findings, directives for further studies are presented for this ongoing project.

Book excerpt: The present wind tunnel study examines the suitability of the current wind provisions in wind codes and standards for the design of roof zones of flat-roofed low-rise buildings with large dimensions. Current wind codes and standards have load provisions dealing with low buildings of common configurations. Large buildings, say 100 m long, have not been considered when these provisions were established. As a result, the interaction between wind and buildings of such geometries should be investigated for the assessment of current wind provisions in terms of their applicability to such configurations. Nine large low-rise buildings of 5, 7.5 and 10 m high with flat roofs have been tested in a typical open country exposure in the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel of Concordia University. The models have been tested for wind directions ranging from 0° to 90° at increments of 15°. The buildings have large square plan with equivalent full-scale horizontal dimensions ranging from 60 to 180 m. Local roof pressure coefficients have been obtained from the wind tunnel measurements. Moreover, area-averaged negative peak pressure coefficients have been established using numerical integration of individual pressure coefficients. The effects of building dimensions on the generated roof pressures have been addressed in this study. This thesis presents a comparative study based on code provisions and experimental results. The first part compares the application of the current code roof zone systems and the design wind pressures specified in codes and standards. The second part of the study compares the experimental results with the respective values specified in code/standard provisions in terms of wind pressures and roof zone sizes to assess the suitability of these provisions. These comparisons show significant differences in the patterns of the design pressure coefficients among the current wind codes and standards. Application of the current provisions of ASCE 7-10 and NBCC 2010 on building geometries of large roofs and low height may lead to considerably conservative and uneconomic roof design. An exception for very long low buildings, as far as the determination of the sizes of roof edge and corner zones is concerned, has been recommended to rectify the deficiency of wind codes and standards for these building geometries.
