Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to examine the role of Canada’s newspapers in perpetuating the myth of Native inferiority. Seeing Red is a groundbreaking study of how Canadian English-language newspapers have portrayed Aboriginal peoples from 1869 to the present day. It assesses a wide range of publications on topics that include the sale of Rupert’s Land, the signing of Treaty 3, the North-West Rebellion and Louis Riel, the death of Pauline Johnson, the outing of Grey Owl, the discussions surrounding Bill C-31, the “Bended Elbow” standoff at Kenora, Ontario, and the Oka Crisis. The authors uncover overwhelming evidence that the colonial imaginary not only thrives, but dominates depictions of Aboriginal peoples in mainstream newspapers. The colonial constructs ingrained in the news media perpetuate an imagined Native inferiority that contributes significantly to the marginalization of Indigenous people in Canada. That such imagery persists to this day suggests strongly that our country lives in denial, failing to live up to its cultural mosaic boosterism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West Branch of the Feather River in northern Butte County was once a rich mining region. In 1859, an incredible 54-pound gold nugget washed from the flanks of Sawmill Peak, named for the ridge's other main industry, logging. An intricate web of stage roads, and later railroads, linked the little mining and lumber towns that dotted these peaks covered in giant white and ponderosa pine. Steam engines hauled huge logs to mills like the Diamond Match Company, crossing steep canyons on wooden trestles stretched to heart-stopping heights. Some early mining towns like Magalia (once known as Dogtown--site of the gargantuan nugget) and Stirling City, are still there. Others like Nimshew, Lovelock, Toadtown, Powellton, Chaparral, Coutelenc, and Inskip, are ghost towns, inhabiting only the photographs that memorialize their short heyday.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There isn’t a person who had anything to do with the gaming industry in Las Vegas—or the world for that matter—that doesn’t recognize the company name of Paul-Son Dice. But how many know the name of the man behind Paul-Son, Paul S. Endy Jr.? He was known by many names, including Mr. Paulson, the old man, a mover and a shaker, a bull in a china shop, and Mr. Endy. But to me he was known as my father, and I would like to share the story of his life and the legacy to the gaming industry he left behind. Dear Eric, I went to work at the El Cortez in 1965. By 1967, I became the Casino Manager and started doing business with your dad. I became his oldest and largest customer. Over the years, through several more hotels, I gave Paul-Son Dice and Cards over 90% of my business --- gaming tables, dice, chips, etc. Your father was a true pioneer in the gaming supply business. He, myself and my father, Jackie Gaughan, are all in the Gambling Hall of Fame. Your brother, Tom, and I were close friends and my son, John, worked one summer for your company. Eric, best of luck on this endeavor. I am sure if your father were still alive today, he would be proud of you. Michael Gaughan South Point Hotel Dear Eric, As a Las Vegas resident since 1964 and Mayor for 12 years, I had the pleasure of knowing your father Paul Endy Jr. both personally and professionally. I remember having breakfast with him and the other “movers and shakers” at Papa Gars which was right around the corner and across the railroad tracks from Paul-Son Dice and Card Company. Your dad reminded me of a “Bull in a China Shop” and was able to get things done today, not yesterday and sealed with a handshake. I consider him as a gaming legend and one of the “good old boys” whose fundraising efforts for both UNLV baseball and Westcare were commendable. Thank You for continuing his gaming legacy. Mayor Oscar Goodman Mayor of Las Vegas from 1999-2011 Eric, Your Dad was a real Casino Gaming Legend and a great human being! I remember when your father was inducted into the gaming Hall of Fame in 1996, an honor very well deserved. I will always cherish the time your Dad and I spent together and the commitment we both had to fundraising for charitable causes. I am so proud that you are continuing his legacy by writing his biography. Wayne Newton Mr. Las Vegas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection offers a global perspective on the changing character of cities and the increasing importance that consumer culture plays in defining their symbolic economies. Increasingly, forms of spectacle have come to shape how cities are imagined and to influence their character and the practices through which we know them - from advertising and the selling of real estate, to youth cultural consumption practices and forms of entrepreneurship, to the regeneration of urban areas under the guise of the heritage industry and the development of a WiFi landscape. Using examples of cities such as New York, Sydney, Atlantic City, Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, Douala, Liverpool, San Juan, Berlin and Harbin this book illustrates how image and practice have become entangled in the performance of the symbolic economy. It also argues that it is not just how the urban present is being shaped in this way that is significant to the development of cities but also that a prominent feature of their development has been the spectacular imagining of the past as heritage and through regeneration. Yet the ghosts that this conjures up in practice offer us a possible form of political unsettlement and alternative ways of viewing cities that is only just beginning to be explored. Through this important collection by some of the leading analysts of consumption, cities and space Consuming the Entrepreneurial City offers a cutting edge analysis of the ways in which cities are developing and the implications this has for their future. It is essential reading for students of Urban Studies, Geography, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Heritage Studies and Anthropology.
