Book excerpt: We review the status of theoretical expectations and experimental searches for nucleon decay, and predict the sensitivities which could be reached by future experiments. For the immediate future, we concur with the conclusions of the 1982 Summer Workshop on Proton Decay Experiments: all detectors now in operation or construction will be relatively insensitive to some potentially important decay modes. Next-generation experiments must therefore be designed to search for these modes, and should be undertaken whether or not present experiments detect nucleon decay in other modes. These future experiments should be designed to push the lifetime limits on all decay modes to the levels at which irreducible cosmic-ray neutrino-induced backgrounds become important. Since the technology for these next-generation experiments is available now, the timetable for starting work on them will be determined by funding constraints and not by the need for extensive development of detectors. Efforts to develop advanced detector techniques should also be pursued, in order to mount more sensitive searches than can be envisioned using current technology, or to provide the most precise measurements possible of the properties of the nucleon decay interaction if it should occur at a detectable rate.

Book excerpt: Even after more than 40 years of experimentation we have not observed the decay of the basic constituent of everyday matter: the proton. So far, the proton appears to be completely stable. This is very puzzling because reasonable models of physics predict that protons after living very long should break apart into lighter particles such as electrons, muons, and pions. Over the last several decades both the experiments and the theory of particles have become increasingly sophisticated. The latest and best experiment (Super-Kamiokande) is in the Kamioka mine in Japan: it has monitored 20,000 tons of water for more than 3 years to see decays of protons; none has been found. Yet the sheer size and precision of this experiment has allowed it to find evidence for neutrino mass by observing oscillations of neutrinos generated in the earth's atmosphere by high energy cosmic rays from outer space. Similar detectors in the past have observed neutrinos from the Sun as well as from Supernova explosions. This workshop was intended to find the next step in this process of experimentation. Should we continue the search for proton decay? The answer from this conference seems to be a definite yes! However, the answer for what sensitivity to achieve seems to be mixed. Regardless of the exact answer about the type and size of the next detector, this project will be much larger than any of the previous projects. Therefore we need to create a consensus in the international physics community and also explore the likely synergistic impact of such a project on other fields of research such as neutrino physics and astrophysics.

Book excerpt: We survey the current status and future prospects of experiments to search for nucleon decay. Results from current experiments are summarized, and the background rejection capabilities of various techniques are described. We discuss the prospects for improved sensitivity in the new experiments that are now coming into operation, and the opportunities for the next generation of detectors. 33 refs., 2 figs., 4 tabs.

Book excerpt: The Soudan 2 proton decay experiment is now 1/4 complete and assembled at the bottom of the Soudan iron mine in northern Minnesota, USA. When completed, it will be an 100 ton, fine grained, iron calorimeter. It is comprised of 256 identical modules. The cavity is 14 /times/ 72 /times/ 11 /times/ m (w /times/ 1 /times/ h) large enough to accommodate a 3300 ton detector of similar design. The detector samples track positions every 15, 10, and 2mm along the three spatial coordinations. Thus, the detector will have excellent tracking capabilities for the low energy charged particles and electromagnetic showers expected from nucleon decay candidates and neutrino background events. In addition, for such events the energy of particles observed is sufficiently low that they will stop inside the detector. The measurement of the ionization deposited as a function of track length allows the determination of track and will yield some information on the particle type. In addition to the dE/dx measurements the Soudan 2 detector has several advantages over previous nucleon decay detectors. The honeycomb geometry has very isotropic detection compared with other tracking detectors. The thin steel and local triggering system produces a low trigger threshold giving excellent efficiency for multiparticle decay nodes or ones with missing energy due to neutrinos. 8 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following proceedings contains most of the contributions given at Orbis Scientiae 1981. As has become customary during the past few years, the organizers and moderators have attempted to strike a balance between reviews of the status of experimental and theoretical developments during the preceding year. We are very pleased that experimentalists representing the critical developments in new accelerator plans, neutrino oscillations, proton decay, and decay schemes of the upsilon, have seen fit to enlighten at first hand their theoretical colleagues. We believe that this interaction can be of great benefit to both groups. The reports of theorists on many of the key theoretical advances by the practitioners themselves is a particularly satisfying feature of this series of conferences and is a tribute to the care and wisdom of the session moderators. Although it has not been a customary editorial practice, we feel that it is particularly appropriate to point out that the 1981 recipient of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Prize was Professor Frederick Reines, of University of California, Irvine, for his pioneering experiments which first experimentally estab lished the existence of the neutrino. The flurry of activit- experimental and theoretical - generated by recent evidence for massive neutrinos is amply reflected in the contents of this volume. The enthusiasm and skill of Mrs. Helga S. Billings and Mrs. Susan L. Maxon in the organization and the running of the con ference, as well as in the preparation of these proceedings, is gratefully acknowledged.
