Download or read book Growth and Coarsening written by Lorenz Ratke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 100 years after the first observation of ripening by Ostwald and 40 years after the first publication of a theory describing this process, this monograph presents in a self-consistent and comprehensive manner, all the bits and pieces of coarsening theories so that the main issues and the underlying mathematics of self-similar coarsening of dispersed systems can be understood. Rather than giving a complete survey of the field, it presents a careful derivation of the existing results and places them into some perspective.
Book Synopsis Nucleation and Growth in Applied Materials by : Manuel Eduardo Palomar-Pardavé
Download or read book Nucleation and Growth in Applied Materials written by Manuel Eduardo Palomar-Pardavé and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-01-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nucleation and Growth in Applied Materials covers fundamental aspects of thermodynamics and kinetics, nucleation and growth phenomena occurring during materials processing and synthesis in engineering of materials. Theoretical and practical approaches used to identify and quantify nucleation are analyzed. These approaches can be used to explain the relationship of the physical properties of the material with nucleation and growth processes. Sections cover modern methods such as SEM, TEM, EBSD microtexture, X-ray macrotexture and modeling and simulation (Monte Carlo, Molecular dynamic simulation, machine learning, etc.). Based on these observations, their applications in engineering materials and processes are discussed. Moreover, methodology (experimental and modeling) of nucleation and growth of metals and other materials from aqueous and nonaqueous solvents using electrochemical means are reviewed. Although nucleation and growth are well-studied processes in materials, the quantification of the number of nuclei during these processes are complicated. A key aim of the book is to systematize information and share knowledge about the nucleation and growth phenomena occurring in different engineering processes related to materials science and engineering. Provides the key principles and definitions to understanding nucleation and growth processes in materials and the relationship between these processes and bulk material properties Describes criteria for nucleation in different materials and methods for quantification, materials characterization and modeling Discusses materials design strategies to apply understanding of materials chemical composition and structure to the improvement of material properties and creation of new materials
Book Synopsis New Perspectives on Mineral Nucleation and Growth by : Alexander E.S. Van Driessche
Download or read book New Perspectives on Mineral Nucleation and Growth written by Alexander E.S. Van Driessche and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, numerous studies have demonstrated the existence of alternative pathways to nucleation and crystallisation that oppose the classical view. Such proposed scenarios include multistage reactions proceeding via various precursor species and/or intermediate phases. The aim of this book is to review and discuss these recent advances in our understanding of the early stages of mineralisation through a series of contributions that address both experimental and theoretical studies about the formation and nature of initial precursor species (e.g., prenucleation clusters, dense liquid phases, amorphous nanoparticles, etc.) as well as their transformations leading to the stable mineral phase. Several chapters are devoted to cutting-edge analytical techniques used for investigating the above processes in situ, in real time and at conditions relevant to both natural and industrial processes. At the end of the book, the editors summarize the key questions that still need to be addressed in order to establish a complete picture of the nucleation and growth processes involved during the formation of minerals

Book Synopsis Nucleation and Growth Processes in Materials by : Antonios Gonis
Download or read book Nucleation and Growth Processes in Materials written by Antonios Gonis and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the goals of materials science is to design alloys with pre-specified desirable technological properties. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of the fundamental mechanisms underlying materials behavior. In particular, one must understand the effects on alloy properties caused by intentional changes in concentration and how the combinations of temperature, time and uncontrollable foreign impurities affect microstructure. In addition to the equilibrium phase information contained in phase diagrams, nonequilibrium dynamic processes and metastable phases are known to be crucial in determining materials properties. This volume brings together researchers working on various aspects of nonequilibrium processes in materials to discuss current research issues and to provide guidelines for future work. Particular attention was paid to understanding particle nucleation and growth, both experimentally and theoretically, solid-state reactions, nanosystems, liquid-solid transformations, and solidification and amorphization. On the theoretical side, fundamental principles governing nucleation and growth, and related phenomena such as coarsening and Ostwald ripening, are discussed. Progress is also reported on the phase field method and on Monte Carlo simulations.

Book Synopsis Crystallization and Growth of Colloidal Nanocrystals by : Edson Roberto Leite
Download or read book Crystallization and Growth of Colloidal Nanocrystals written by Edson Roberto Leite and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the size, shape, and microstructure of nanocrystalline materials strongly impact physical and chemical properties, the development of new synthetic routes to nanocrystals with controlled composition and morphology is a key objective of the nanomaterials community. This objective is dependent on control of the nucleation and growth mechanisms that occur during the synthetic process, which in turn requires a fundamental understanding of both classical nucleation and growth and non-classical growth processes in nanostructured materials. Recently, a novel growth process called Oriented Attachment (OA) was identified which appears to be a fundamental mechanism during the development of nanoscale materials. OA is a special case of aggregation that provides an important route by which nanocrystals grow, defects are formed, and unique—often symmetry-defying—crystal morphologies can be produced. This growth mechanism involves reversible self-assembly of primary nanocrystals followed by reorientation of the assembled nanoparticles to achieve structural accord at the particle-particle interface, the removal of adsorbates and solvent molecules, and, finally, the irreversible formation of chemical bonds to produce new single crystals, twins, and intergrowths. Crystallization and Growth of Colloidal Nanocrystals provides a current understanding of the mechanisms related to nucleation and growth for use in controlling nanocrystal morphology and physical-chemical properties, and is essential reading for any chemist or materials scientist with an interest in using nanocrystals as building blocks for larger structures. This book provides a compendium for the expert reader as well as an excellent introduction for advanced undergraduate and graduate students seeking a gateway into this dynamic area of research.
