Book excerpt: "Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is widely used because of the rich data it produces, and some of the most valuable data come from the study of nuclear spin relaxation in solution. This book clarifies the nature of the phenomenon, shows how to study it, and explains why such studies are worthwhile. Avoiding overly demanding mathematics, the authors explain relaxation in a manner that anyone with a basic familiarity with NMR can follow. Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Liquids: Theory, Experiments, and Applications, Second Edition, forms supplementary reading for graduate students and a valuable desk reference for NMR spectroscopists in chemistry, physics, chemical physics, or biochemistry"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron spin relaxation has established itself as an important experimental method for studying the details of molecular motion in liquids, and as a harsh testing ground for theoreticians. The theo retical difficulties are connected with the complexity of the mole cular motion, and the theoretical interest lies not only in its im portant consequences for the interpretation of experiments, but also in the fascination of a system in which a well-defined quantum me chanical component is in interaction with a complex quasi-classical environment. It is because the theories are concerned with such dissimilar but connected systems that the techniques involved are so numerous. Many of the standard manipulations of quantum mechanics must be brought to bear, and at the same time they must be combined with statistical techniques which are often of considerable sophis tication. The purpose of this volume is to present a survey of these techniques and their application to spin relaxation problems. No single volume can be exhaustive, but we believe that the contri butions to this volume are sufficiently broad to show how those who are concerned with spin relaxation problems think about the subject and circumvent, or expose, its difficulties. The first few Chapters (I-V) review the basic quantum mechani cal and statistical manipulations which are often used.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that a long-lived form of spin order, namely singlet order, can be prepared from nuclear spin magnetisation first emerged in 2004. The unusual properties of singlet order–its long lifetime and the fact that it is NMR silent but interconvertible into other forms of NMR active order—make it a ‘smart tag’ that can be used to store information for a long time or through distant space points. It is not unexpected then, that since its first appearance, this idea has caught the attention of research groups interested in exploiting this form of order in different fields of research spanning from biology to materials science and from hyperpolarisation to quantum computing. This first book on the subject gives a thorough description of the various aspects that affect the development of the topic and details the interdisciplinary applications. The book starts with a section dedicated to the basic theories of long-lived spin order and then proceeds with a description of the state-of-the-art experimental techniques developed to manipulate singlet order. It then concludes by covering the generalization of the concept of singlet order by introducing and discussing other forms of long-lived spin order.

Book excerpt: Spin relaxation parameters, although difficult to interpret, are attracting interest in NMR as these parameters are capable of yielding both structural and dynamic information. Cross-relaxation and cross-correlation parameters afford a non-ambiguous approach to molecular structure and dynamics although they require some special skills for their experimental determination and for their exploitation. This work will start with an introduction to nuclear spin cross-relaxation and cross-correlation phenomena in liquids then look in more detail at molecules in soft matter and large biomolecules. Providing a detailed, timely account, the authors are filling a gap in the present NMR literature for the analytical scientist.

It contains 20-odd review papers from the major contributors to this rapidly growing field of research, summarizing the main results obtained in the description and understanding of the phase transitions taking place between the isotopic, nematic, cholesteric, lamellar, hexagonal, and cubic mesophases of complex fluids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Liquid State focuses on the atomic motions and positions of liquids. Particularly given importance in this book are internal motion of molecules as a whole and the motion of atoms in a monatomic liquid. Divided into 16 chapters, the book opens by outlining the general properties of liquids, including a comparison of liquid argon and liquid sodium, discussions on theories and methods of studying the liquid state, and thermodynamic relationships. The book proceeds by defining the molecular distribution functions and equation of state, the potential function for non-conducting liquids and metals, and measurement of pair distribution function. Numerical analyses and representations are provided to simplify the functions of equations. The book discusses equilibrium properties wherein calculations on the state of gases and fluids are presented. The text also underlines space and time dependent correlation functions. Given emphasis in this part are neutron scattering, electromagnetic radiation, and various radiation scattering techniques. Other concerns discussed are diffusion and single particle motion, velocity of correlation function, diffusion and viscosity coefficients, liquid-gas critical point, and a comparison of classical and quantum liquids. The selection is a valuable source of information for readers wanting to study the composition and reactions of liquids.
