Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intranuclear cascade model of nuclear reactions was used to calculate double differential cross sections for the (p, xn) reaction. The calculations were performed with a generalized version of the code VEGAS, CLUST. Model predictions are compared with recent experimental data. Calculated fast-particle spectral shapes at low angles are reproduced reasonably well for the experimental data. As one possible improvement to the model, the proton reaction cross sections were estimated independently using the prescriptions of Karol, and DeVries and Peng. The systematic trends that emerge from this analysis are discussed. 12 refs., 5 figs.

Book Synopsis High Energy Spin Physics by : Karl-Heinz Althoff
Download or read book High Energy Spin Physics written by Karl-Heinz Althoff and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 9th International Symposium on High Energy Spin Physics, held in Bonn, 6-15 September 1990, attracted 280 participants from 16 countries. This meet ing covered not only fundamental experimental and theoretical spin phenomena but also technological developments in polarized beams and targets. For the first time intermediate energy spin physics with electron machines was discussed extensively. Highlights included the work on polarized high energy electron beams at LEP and TRISTAN and the failure of the standard model in connection with spin phenomena, in particular the growth of the spin asymmetry in violent proton-proton scattering. Also the presentation of different models in con nection with the still-unsolved 'proton spin crisis' and the proposals for four different experiments to determine the spin structure functions caused lively and sometimes controversial discussions. The Organizing Committee would like to thank all speakers for their excel lent talks, the conveners for the organization of the parallel sessions, and the International Advisory Committee for their advice. Four workshops preceded the symposium. 160 participants, among them many young physicists, discussed mainly technological spin problems. These papers are published in separate proceedings. We gratefully acknowledge the enthusiastic help of the members of our institute in preparing and running the conference and the workshops, especially Mrs. D. FaSbender, Mrs. E. Wendorf, Mrs. J. Wetzel, and Dr. U.Idschok.

Book Synopsis Interactions of Protons with Nuclei (Supplement to I/13a,b,c) by :
Download or read book Interactions of Protons with Nuclei (Supplement to I/13a,b,c) written by and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-01-25 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precise knowledge of production cross sections for specific radionuclides for medium energies (10 MeV to 100 GeV) of the incident particle gains ever more importance, not only for nuclear physics but also for many applications, e.g. astrophysics, radiation protection at accelerators but also on space flights, radioisotope techniques in medicine and for industrial applications and perhaps even for the removal of nuclear waste by accelerators. Since the last systematic review of these production cross sections in 1973 (LB I/5a, b, c) an impressive amount of new experimental data has been accumulated. In the first three parts of this volume already a huge amount of data has been compiled for the production of radioisotopes by medium energetic protons on targets from He to Am. The precise values of the cross sections can be taken from the tables, whereas the figures show the general trend of the cross sections and can be more readily used for interpolations. In the fourth part of this volume supplement data for subvolumes I/13a, b and c will be compiled. The origin of the authors made it possible to include also data from the USSR and other East European states which sometimes are not easy to access. The tables and figures have been compiled with extraordinary care and should present the most complete compilation for this type of nuclear reactions.

Book Synopsis Proton Therapy Physics by : Harald Paganetti
Download or read book Proton Therapy Physics written by Harald Paganetti and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proton Therapy Physics goes beyond current books on proton therapy to provide an in-depth overview of the physics aspects of this radiation therapy modality, eliminating the need to dig through information scattered in the medical physics literature. After tracing the history of proton therapy, the book summarizes the atomic and nuclear physics background necessary for understanding proton interactions with tissue. It describes the physics of proton accelerators, the parameters of clinical proton beams, and the mechanisms to generate a conformal dose distribution in a patient. The text then covers detector systems and measuring techniques for reference dosimetry, outlines basic quality assurance and commissioning guidelines, and gives examples of Monte Carlo simulations in proton therapy. The book moves on to discussions of treatment planning for single- and multiple-field uniform doses, dose calculation concepts and algorithms, and precision and uncertainties for nonmoving and moving targets. It also examines computerized treatment plan optimization, methods for in vivo dose or beam range verification, the safety of patients and operating personnel, and the biological implications of using protons from a physics perspective. The final chapter illustrates the use of risk models for common tissue complications in treatment optimization. Along with exploring quality assurance issues and biological considerations, this practical guide collects the latest clinical studies on the use of protons in treatment planning and radiation monitoring. Suitable for both newcomers in medical physics and more seasoned specialists in radiation oncology, the book helps readers understand the uncertainties and limitations of precisely shaped dose distribution.

Book Synopsis Precompound Decay Models for Medium Energy Nuclear Reactions by :
Download or read book Precompound Decay Models for Medium Energy Nuclear Reactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formulations used for precompound decay models are presented and explained in terms of the physics of the intranuclear cascade model. Several features of spectra of medium energy (10--1000 MeV) reactions are summarized. Results of precompound plus evaporation calculations from the code ALICE are compared with a wide body of proton, alpha, and heavy ion induced reaction data to illustrate both the power and deficiencies of predicting yield of these reactions in the medium energy regime. 23 refs., 13 figs.
