Book excerpt: The Compound-Nuclear Reaction and Related Topics (CNR*) international workshop series was initiated in 2007 with a meeting near Yosemite National Park. It has since been held in Bordeaux (2009), Prague (2011), Sao Paulo (2013), Tokyo (2015), and Berkeley, California (2018). The workshop series brings together experts in nuclear theory, experiment, data evaluations, and applications, and fosters interactions among these groups. Topics of interest include: nuclear reaction mechanisms, optical model, direct reactions and the compound nucleus, pre-equilibrium reactions, fusion and fission, cross section measurements (direct and indirect methods), Hauser-Feshbach theory (limits and extensions), compound-nuclear decays, particle and gamma emission, level densities, strength functions, nuclear structure for compound-nuclear reactions, nuclear energy, nuclear astrophysics, and other topics. This peer-reviewed proceedings volume presents papers and poster summaries from the 6th International Workshop on Compound-Nuclear Reactions and Related Topics CNR*18, held on September 24-28, 2018, at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Berkeley, CA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents recent progress in the improvement of the nuclear database needed for the development of Generation IV nuclear energy systems. The Generation IV International Forum (GIF) identified six advanced concepts for sustainable nuclear energy production at competitive prices and with advanced safety, with special attention to nuclear non-proliferation and physical protection issues, minimization of long-lived radiotoxic waste, and optimum natural resource utilization System groups have been established for studying these concepts in detail, and nuclear data are an inherent part of these studies. This book reviews the work recently performed for the development of these systems. The contributions include an up-to-date overview of recent achievements in sensitivity analysis, model calculations, estimates of uncertainties, and the present status of nuclear databases with regard to their applications to Generation IV systems. In the workshop, special attention was given to the identification of nuclear data needs from sensitivity analysis of benchmark experiments and the treatment of uncertainties. The proceedings contain overviews of several experimental program and recent results of interest for the development of Generation IV systems. Contents: Nuclear Data Needs for Generation IV Systems: Future of Nuclear Energy and the Role of Nuclear Data (P Finck); Nuclear Data Needs for Generation IV Nuclear Energy Systems OCo Summary of US Workshop (T A Taiwo & H S Khalil); Innovative Fuel Types for Minor Actinides Transmutation (D Haas et al.); Benchmarks, Sensitivity Calculations, Uncertainties: Sensitivity of Advanced Reactor and Fuel Cycle Performance Parameters to Nuclear Data Uncertainties (G Aliberti et al.); Computer Model of an Error Propagation Through Micro-Campaign of Fast Neutron Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactor (E Ivanov); Generating Covariance Data with Nuclear Models (A J Koning); Experiments: INL Capabilities for Nuclear Data Measurements Using the Argonne Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Facility (J D Cole et al.); Cross-Section Measurements in the Fast Neutron Energy Range (A Plompen); Recent Measurements of Neutron Capture Cross Sections for Minor Actinides by an JNC and Kyoto University Group (H Harada et al.); Evaluated Data Libraries: Nuclear Data Evaluation for Generation IV (G Nogu re et al.); Improved Evaluations of Neutron-Induced Reactions on Americium Isotopes (P Talou et al.); and several other important contributions. Readership: Graduate students and nuclear physicists interested in experimental nuclear physics, nuclear reactions modeling, and reactor physics, especially the development of Generation IV reactors."

Book excerpt: The practical use of such nuclear model codes requires a considerable numerical input that describes the properties of the nuclei and the interactions involved. Experts have used a variety of different methods and input data sets, often developed over many years in their own laboratories. Many of these input databases are poorly or not at all documented, and are not always available for other users. With the trend towards reduced funding for nuclear data evaluations, there is a real threat that the immense amount of accumulated knowledge of nuclear data input parameters and associated calculations may be compromised or even lost for future applications. Therefore, the IAEA has undertaken an extensive coordinated effort to develop a library of evaluated and tested nuclear-model input parameters: RIPL-2.--Publisher's description.

The conference was in a series of application oriented nuclear data conferences organized in the past under the auspices of the Nuclear Energy Agency-Nuclear Data Committee (NEANDC) and with the support of the Nuclear Energy Agency-Committee on Reactor Physics (NEACRP). It was the fIrst international conference on nuclear data held in Germany, with the scientific responsibility entrusted to the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry of the Research Centre Jillich. The scientific programme was established by the International Programme Committee in consultation with the International Advisers, and the NEA and IAEA cooperated in the organization. A total of 328 persons from 37 countries and fIve international organizations participated. The scope of these Proceedings extends to a wide range of interdisciplinary topics dealing with measu rement, calculation, evaluation and application of nuclear data, with a major emphasis on numerical data. Both energy and non-energy related applications are considered and due attention is given to some fundamental aspects relevant to the understanding of nuclear data.

Book excerpt: The third, revised edition of this popular textbook and reference, which has been translated into Russian and Chinese, expands the comprehensive and balanced coverage of nuclear reactor physics to include recent advances in understanding of this topic. The first part of the book covers basic reactor physics, including, but not limited to nuclear reaction data, neutron diffusion theory, reactor criticality and dynamics, neutron energy distribution, fuel burnup, reactor types and reactor safety. The second part then deals with such physically and mathematically more advanced topics as neutron transport theory, neutron slowing down, resonance absorption, neutron thermalization, perturbation and variational methods, homogenization, nodal and synthesis methods, and space-time neutron dynamics. For ease of reference, the detailed appendices contain nuclear data, useful mathematical formulas, an overview of special functions as well as introductions to matrix algebra and Laplace transforms. With its focus on conveying the in-depth knowledge needed by advanced student and professional nuclear engineers, this text is ideal for use in numerous courses and for self-study by professionals in basic nuclear reactor physics, advanced nuclear reactor physics, neutron transport theory, nuclear reactor dynamics and stability, nuclear reactor fuel cycle physics and other important topics in the field of nuclear reactor physics.

This book was released on 2012-06-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, the National Cancer Institute initiated an investigation of cancer risks in populations near 52 commercial nuclear power plants and 10 Department of Energy nuclear facilities (including research and nuclear weapons production facilities and one reprocessing plant) in the United States. The results of the NCI investigation were used a primary resource for communicating with the public about the cancer risks near the nuclear facilities. However, this study is now over 20 years old. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requested that the National Academy of Sciences provide an updated assessment of cancer risks in populations near USNRC-licensed nuclear facilities that utilize or process uranium for the production of electricity. Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations near Nuclear Facilities: Phase 1 focuses on identifying scientifically sound approaches for carrying out an assessment of cancer risks associated with living near a nuclear facility, judgments about the strengths and weaknesses of various statistical power, ability to assess potential confounding factors, possible biases, and required effort. The results from this Phase 1 study will be used to inform the design of cancer risk assessment, which will be carried out in Phase 2. This report is beneficial for the general public, communities near nuclear facilities, stakeholders, healthcare providers, policy makers, state and local officials, community leaders, and the media.
