Book excerpt: This book introduces novel approaches and practical examples of autonomous nuclear power plants that minimize operator intervention. Autonomous nuclear power plants with artificial intelligence presents a framework to enable nuclear power plants to autonomously operate and introduces artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to implement its functions. Although nuclear power plants are already highly automated to reduce human errors and guarantee the reliability of system operations, the term “autonomous” is still not popular because AI techniques are regarded as less proven technologies. However, the use of AI techniques and the autonomous operation seems unavoidable because of their great advantages, especially, in advanced reactors and small modular reactors. The book includes the following topics: Monitoring, diagnosis, and prediction. Intelligent control. Operator support systems. Operator-autonomous system interaction. Integration into the autonomous operation system. This book will provides useful information for researchers and students who are interested in applying AI techniques in the fields of nuclear as well as other industries. This book covers broad practical applications of AI techniques from the classical fault diagnosis to more recent autonomous control. In addition, specific techniques and modelling examples are expected to be very informative to the beginners in the AI studies.

Book excerpt: This conference brought together experts from 15 countries to discuss application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to the nuclear industry. It was apparent from the meeting that even those active in the field were surprised at the extent of work and the progress made. There was a strong impression that application of this technology to nuclear power plants is inevitable. The benefits to improved operation, design, and safety are simply too significant to be ignored. This is a much different conclusion than might have been reached a few years ago when the technology was new and people were struggling to understand its significance. We believe that this meeting reflects a major turning point for the technology. It has moved from being a topic understood only by specialists to a situation where users are the most active people in the field. A broad array of innovative work is described from all of the participating countries. The activity in the u.s. is large and diverse. Although there is no nationally focussed policy for AI research in the U.S., many of these activities are reported here. Japan and France have a strong drive to integrate AI technology into their nuclear plants, and this is reflecteq in these proceedings.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) It permits an important step in the applied artificial intelligence field. We use the influence diagram (ID) technique for extending the Bayesian network structure to provide decision support to the plant personnel. The advisory model using the ID technique derives recommendations concerning the optimal alternative actions to be executed during incidents. Finally, we adopt an analytical model to estimate the mean time to occurrence of the initiating faults and failures of the monitored systems. This model considers the multi-state dynamic behavior of the SSCs. The ultimate configuration of these models for various tasks of the HMS is named the HIS-N, hybrid intelligent system for NPP operations. The HIS-N has been developed, tested and verified on a test bed that mimics the bearing system of a horizontal charging pump. The results from the implementation of the HIS-N on the target system show consistent behavior in fault diagnosis, decision support and failure prediction tasks. The features of our HMS methodology gives us new capabilities to enhance the NPP operations, in order to reach its ultimate goal. The new monitoring method with the HIS-N developed in this work is not restricted to NPP operational applications. We recommend that an identical approach be adopted for similar purposes also in other large scale, complex process domains.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Artificial Intelligence Group in the Nuclear Engineering Program has designed and built an Operator Advisor (OA), an AI system to monitor nuclear power plant parameters, detect component and system malfunctions, dispose their causes, and provide the plant operators with the correct procedures for mitigating the consequences of the malfunctions. It then monitors performance of the procedures, and provides backup steps when specific operator actions fail. The OA has been implemented on Sun 4 workstations in Common Lisp, and has been interfaced to run in real time on the Perry Nuclear Power Plant full-function simulator in the plant training department. The eventual goal for a fully functioning Operator Advisor would be to have reactor operators receive direction for all plant operations. Such a goal requires considerable testing of the system within limited malfunction boundaries, an extensive Verification & Validation (V & V) effort, a large knowledge base development effort, and development of tools as part of the system to automate its maintenance. Clearly, these efforts are beyond the scope of the feasibility effort expended during this project period. However, as a result of this project, we have an AI based platform upon which a complete system can be built.
