Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for 'Theory of Evolution and Relaxation of Multi-Spin Systems': . it provides a lucid and systematic development of a very complex area of modern theory involving spin dynamics driven by complex, non-commuting hamiltonians. These phenomena are of fundamental importance in NMR, NQR and ESR spectroscopies. The monograph will be extremely useful both in graduate education and in on-going research. Dr. Kruk's manuscript is an extremely valuable contribution to our field and is written at the highest level of professional scholarship. The general scholarly quality and the theoretical level are both very high, thus providing a unique resource to the research community. Dr. Kruk succeeded to write a comprehensive representation of the theoretical background of spin relaxation. There is no other treatise on magnetic resonance on the market with this multidisciplinary comprehensiveness, clarity of treatment and systematic analysis of spin relaxation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relaxation in Magnetic Resonance contains a series of lecture notes for a special topics course at the University of South Carolina in 1967. This book contains 21 chapters that summarize the main theoretical formulations and experimental results of magnetic resonance relaxation phenomena in several physical systems. This text deals first with the various methods in determining the relaxation behavior of the macroscopic spin system, such as Bloch equations, saturation methods, and transient resonant absorption. The subsequent chapters discuss the homogeneous and inhomogeneous resonant lines in solids and liquids and the significance of the Kubo-Tomita and Redfield theories in magnetic resonance. This book then considers the background research on electron spin resonance and relaxation in ionic solids. The concluding chapters explore the acoustic absorption coefficient and dielectric constant calculation; the relaxation processes in paramagnetic substance; and the characteristics of Mössbauer spectra and their application in magnetic relaxation. This book will be useful to both graduate students embarking upon thesis problems in relaxation and more advanced workers who seek an overall summary of the status of the field, as well as to physicists and chemists.

Book excerpt: This book provides a complete exposition of the theory of nuclear magnetic relaxation caused by the thermal motion of the molecule containing the relaxing nucleus. The author begins by defining the physical quantities encountered in nuclear magnetic resonance studies and surveying pioneering investigations in the field. Nuclear magnetic relaxation by scalar, dipolar, quadrupolar and spin-rotational interactions and by anisotropic chemical shift are then examined in detail. Relaxation rates are expressed in terms of spectral densities, and the values of the spectral densities for various molecular shapes are calculated by random walk or Brownian motion dynamics. The text should be within the grasp of readers who have taken undergraduate courses in electromagnetic theory and in classical and quantum mechanics, although topics in these fields of particular relevance are to be found in appendices. This book will be of value to postgraduate students and research workers using n.m.r. in physics and physical chemistry departments, and by scientists in industrial and medical research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is widely used across many fields of science because of the rich data it produces, and some of the most valuable data come from studies of nuclear spin relaxation in solution. The first edition of this book, published more than a decade ago, provided an accessible and cohesive treatment of the field. The present second edition is a significant update, covering important new developments in recent years. Collecting relaxation theory, experimental techniques, and illustrative applications into a single volume, this book clarifies the nature of the phenomenon, shows how to study it and explains why such studies are worthwhile. Coverage ranges from basic to rigorous theory and from simple to sophisticated experimental methods. Topics include cross-relaxation, multispin phenomena, relaxation studies of molecular dynamics and structure and special topics such as relaxation in systems with quadrupolar nuclei, in paramagnetic systems and in long-living spin states. Avoiding overly demanding mathematics, the authors explain spin relaxation in a manner that anyone with a familiarity with NMR can follow. The focus is on illustrating and explaining the physical nature of relaxation phenomena. Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Liquids: Theory, Experiments and Applications, 2nd edition, provides useful supplementary reading for graduate students and is a valuable reference for NMR spectroscopists, whether in chemistry, physics or biochemistry.

Book excerpt: One of the best ways to "lift the lid" on what is happening inside a given material is to study it using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Of particular interest are NMR 1/T1 relaxation rates, which measure how fast energy stored in magnetic nuclei is transferred to surrounding electrons. This thesis develops a detailed, quantitative theory of NMR 1/T1 relaxation rates, and shows for the first time how they could be used to measure the speed at which energy travels in a wide range of magnetic materials. This theory is used to make predictions for"Quantum Spin Nematics", an exotic form of quantum order analogous to a liquid crystal. In order to do so, it is first necessary to unravel how spin nematics transport energy. This thesis proposes a new way to do this, based on the description of quarks in high-energy physics. Experiments to test the ideas presented are now underway in laboratories across the world.

In recent years, no other technique has gained such significance as NMR spectroscopy. It is used in all branches of science in which precise structural determination is required and in which the nature of interactions and reactions in solution is being studied. Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy has established itself as a premier means for the specialist and non-specialist alike to become familiar with new techniques and applications of NMR spectroscopy.
