Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 8, 2007, one of Cameroons foremost scholars died in a ghastly traffic accident barely hours after launching his most forthright and acerbic collection of poems: Disgrace: Autobiographical Narcissus. Dr. Bate Besong was a social activist, a critic, troubadour, and playwright; an avant-garde, steeped in the tradition of the absurd, who fought against the corrupt system of governance that transmuted Cameroonians into a comatose and apathetic citizenry neutered by fear engendered by the workings of an existing Gestapo. For the first time, Emmanuel Fru Doh has gone beyond an analysis of Besongs plays into giving an in-depth appraisal of his poems which have, for a long time, held back critics because of their opacity. Doh examines each of Besongs plays and collections of poems in separate sections and succeeds in setting Besongs work in perspectivemindful of their concerns and the nations historyas informed by a succinct political vision and an already established technique modified only by genre. The Obasinjom Warrior, which amounts to a brief look at the scholars life and a detailed study of his works, is a befitting tribute to a true patriot and scholar who died fighting the forces of evil, in positions of power, which have transformed his native Cameroon into a province of hell. This is a careful, detailed, and authoritative study of one of the most significant literary figures ever to emerge from Cameroon.

American Institute of Cameroon‘An exciting, inspiring, and much anticipated novel’Africa Positive Magazine, GermanyWith her second novel Angri, Priscillia M. Manjoh fashions a contemporary narrative style that, not unlike Voltaire’s satirical eighteenth-century ‘Candide: Or Optimism’, straddles tonalities of epic and realist literature—a style she calls ‘faction’, a mix of fact and fiction. Moving through the landscape of her troubled, and traumatised country in Africa, the protagonist, Joey Muki, tries to make sense of division, disaster and atrocity, all the while working towards encouraging emerging solidarities, addressing justice and responsibility. Amidst the debris of armed insurrection, violence, and arrogance, Angri is about the will of women to act on their political cultures and social livelihoods.Dr. Norman Saadi Nikro, Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin Germany Priscillia M. Book excerpt: The management of urban waste constitutes one of the major environmental challenges facing African cities in general and Cameroon in particular. Unprecedented population growth and changes in consumption patterns and lifestyles have led to increased waste generation. Municipal solid waste management efforts lag behind the rate of waste generation with attendant environmental and public health risks. The activities, the gender dynamics and politics at the pools of waste generation, particularly the households and markets largely influence the outcome of waste management strategies and policies. This book brings out the gender dimension of municipal solid waste generation and management in the City of Bamenda. It is hoped that the findings revealed and proposals made from the study will be employed by municipal authorities in Cameroon and beyond to enhance waste management efforts.

Book excerpt: The poems contained in this collection are cathartic songs. They convey an amalgam of experiences culled from the poet's peregrinations around the globe. Each poem translates an emotion. This anthology is the externalization of the poet's pent-up emotions, the vocalization of a piece of a mind that yearns to bring sanity to a world that has gone berserk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a nuanced consideration of the Cameroonian experience, Yearning for (Dis) Connections makes critical interventions into debates about coexistence, citizenship, identity formation and performance, democracy and modernity in Cameroon. The essays in the book ranges across Francophone and Anglophone Cameroons to provide a challenging assessment of the common ways of writing and thinking for and of and about the Cameroonian world. The book criticises the blinders of Cameroon's Francophonecentred leadership, analysing its failure to heed Anglophone Cameroon's ontological and epistemological critiques of Cameroon's ongoing exclusions masked by pretences of a Francophone universalism. Yosimbom uses the works of Nyamnjoh, Ndi, Besong and Takwi to explore how Cameroonian worlds are on the move of and for identity negotiations. He also explores how the uneven development of those Cameroonian worlds has been creating growing gaps within and among regions while at the same time Francophonising Anglophones and Anglophonising Francophones through four-fold processes of complementarities, continuity and discontinuity, diachrony and synchrony. The book demonstrates that persistent Francophone hegemony and resurgent Anglophone nationalism often fail to realise that all Cameroonians have been shuffled like a pack of cards; that cultures are formed through complex dialogues and interactions with other cultures; that the boundaries of cultures are fluid, porous and contested; that identities are multiple and layered in complex, pluralist democratic societies; and that there is need for public recognition of cultural and identity specificities in ways that do not deny their fluidity, nimbleness and incompleteness.

Arguing against the grain, the author avoids smug patriotism; that which manages to make everything about the homeland flawless and beautiful. It is the author's conviction that the greatness of a nation resides not in citizens' blind sycophancy, but rather in their willingness to call into question dereliction of duty by political leadership. The goal of this book is to educate global citizens on the quintessence of political vigilance.

Book excerpt: When I read through this compendium of reflections, I see in all of it a constructive critical x-ray of a blessed Nation that has undergone systematic degradation. Cameroon is a Nation blessed with a variety of natural and quality human resources. On the overall, some Cameroonians are peace-loving, law-abiding, patriotic and could even be termed God-fearing. But what accounts for the very high degree of poverty, corruption, bribery, embezzlement, multi-party electoral fraud, unemployment and decadence in all its forms? All of us Cameroonians are responsible for this brazen sad situation. We do not assume our roles and responsibilities adequately and we blame our situation on others. The Universal Church on whom we ought to count does not seem to be helping the situation either. Unspeakable indeed!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aporia is a long prose poem that makes a case for the Ambazonian Revolution. It is my conviction that the task of the genuine intellectual is to speak up when no one dares to speak. When we draw a blank and cannot make sense of the events that have deeply perturbed our lives, we have recourse to the plume in a bid to externalize pent-up emotions. The impetus to write Aporia stemmed from the ongoing genocide in Cameroon; a civil war viewed by domestic and international observers as a by-product of the linguistic genocide, dysfunctional governance, lethal tribalism, brazen kleptomania and the deleterious governmental ineptitude that epitomize the body politic of the Republic of Cameroon. Each verse in the poem is an expression of the poet's frustration and anger in face of injustice that Anglophone Cameroonians have been the bullseye for decades.

Book excerpt: This book is the celebration of one man's vendetta against a cancerous regime that thrives on the rape of democracy and human rights abuses. Lapiro de Mbanga, born Lambo Sandjo Pierre Roger on April 7, 1957 was a conduit for social change. He fought for change in his homeland and died fighting for change in Cameroon. Lapiro believed in the innate goodness of man but also had the conviction that absolute power corrupts absolutely. He was noted for contending that "power creates monsters." His entire musical career was devoted to fighting the cause of the downtrodden in Cameroon. He composed satirical songs on the socio-economic dysphonia in his beleaguered country. In his songs, he articulated the daily travails of the man in the street and the government-orchestrated injustices he witnessed. As a songwriter, Lapiro de Mbanga distinguished himself from his peers through bravado, valiance and the courage to say overtly what many a Cameroonian musician would only mumble in the privacy of their homes. Lapiro's anti-establishment music led to his arrest and imprisonment in September 2009 for three years. Released from prison on April 8, 2011 he was later given political asylum by the USA. On September 2, 2012 Lapiro relocated with some members of his family to Buffalo in New York where he died on March 16, 2014 after an illness. His revolutionary music and fighting spirit live on.
