Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book by one of the Church of England's most respected Anglo-Catholic priests could hardly be more central. The rekindling of devotion to Mary has been one of the many gifts of the Catholic movement to the Church of England, and there are few better exponents of it than Roger Greenacre. He was keen to foster a greater appreciation of Mary among Anglicans, as part of a renewed emphasis on the Church of England's catholic identity and relationship with the wider Church. He traces the way that Mary has been perceived throughout Anglican history, from patterns of Marian devotion in the Middle Ages to her portrayal in today's liturgical texts, and examines her role in ecumenical dialogue. In a selection of homilies he presents Mary to an Anglican and ecumenical audience. The book opens with a biographical account of Roger Greenacre's life and work by his literary executor, Colin Podmore.

Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study of competing representations of the Virgin Mary examines how anxieties about religious and gender identities intersected to create public controversies that, whilst ostensibly about theology and liturgy, were also attempts to define the role and nature of women. Drawing on a variety of sources, this book seeks to revise our understanding of the Victorian religious landscape, both retrieving Catholics from the cultural margins to which they are usually relegated, and calling for a reassessment of the Protestant attitude to the feminine ideal. This book will be useful to advanced students and scholars in a variety of disciplines including history, religious studies, Victorian studies, women’s history and gender studies.

Book excerpt: In his acclaimed Madonnas That Maim, Michael Carroll began his systematic examination of popular Catholicism in Italy. Now, in Veiled Threats, Carroll delves more deeply into the distinctive character of Italian popular Catholicism. He explores in detail the complex relationship between popular and official Catholicism in Italy from the fifteenth century to the present, bringing to light a considerable body of recent Italian scholarship on the Catholic experience in Italy never before translated into English. Carroll places special emphasis on miraculous images and the cults that form around them, on public performances such as self-flagellation during Holy Week processions, on devotion to souls in Purgatory, on the success of preaching orders in adapting to local beliefs, on the role of relics and the incorrupt bodies of saints, and on differing responses to the Reformation in northern and southern Italy. Throughout Veiled Threats, Carroll discovers in the beliefs and practices of popular Catholicism and implicit logic and vital creativity that reflect local experiences and needs far removed from those of official Catholicism.

Book excerpt: Long overlooked by scholars, this seventh-century "Life of the Virgin," attributed to Maximus the Confessor, is the earliest complete Marian biography. Originally written in Greek and now surviving only in Old Georgian, it is now translated for the first time into English. It is a work that holds profound significance for understanding the history of late ancient and medieval Christianity, providing a rich source for understanding the history of Christian piety. This "Life "is especially remarkable for its representation of Mary's prominent involvement in her son's ministry and her leadership of the early Christian community. In particular, it reveals highly developed devotion to Mary's compassionate suffering at the Crucifixion, anticipating by several centuries an influential medieval style of devotion known as "affective piety" whose origins generally have been confined to the Western High Middle Ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholics and Protestants have, since the earliest days of the Reformation, held markedly different views about the Virgin Mary. In Reforming Mary Beth Kreitzer examines the development of Lutheran views on this subject as expressed in 16th-century Lutheran published sermons, starting with the earliest of Luther's own Reformation sermons. She shows that from the beginning Lutherans rejected much of the theology and piety that surrounded Mary in Catholicism, especially her status as heavenly queen and intercessor with Christ. They affirmed those orthodox teachings about Mary that related to Christ (the Virgin's role as Theotokos, the virgin birth) and by extension Mary's purity, or perpetual virginity. As time went on Lutheran preachers showed less interest in Mary as a topic and by the later part of the century showed an increasingly harsh and critical view of her. These later sermons reveal a new willingness, in opposition to received tradition, to impute sin to Mary. Kreitzer attributes this changed attitude to the increasing distance of Lutherans from their Catholic roots, the logical results of theological changes in the Reformation, and a perception of an increased threat of re-catholicization. Finally, she shows, Mary was pressed into service by preachers who endeavored to instruct the laity in both what to believe and how to live, making a causal connection between being a good Christian and being a good citizen of society. In this context, Mary was used as a role model and was often promoted as an exemplar for females in ways that served to constrain and domesticate women, placing them more firmly under male authority. But despite the attempts by preachers to domesticate and mold her, Kreitzer argues, the Lutheran Mary remains a complex and paradoxical figure.
