Book excerpt: Nanometer-sized colloidal quantum dots, or nanocrystals, are of current scientific interest based on their mesoscopic properties as an intermediate state between molecular and bulk materials. Particles sizes of semiconductor materials smaller than the Bohr exciton radius result in a quantum confinement effect that allows the optical properties to be tuned within the band energies of the bulk material such that smaller sizes lead to higher energy transitions at the band edge. The small sizes and tunable monochromatic emission properties make these nanocrystals desirable for a variety of applications, both realized and sought after. Research to further the exploitation of quantum dots includes such applications as biological fluorescence tracer tags and imaging agents, high resolution displays, light emitting diodes (LEDs), low bandwidth lasers, photovoltaic solar cells, and future "nanoelectronics." The thesis of this dissertation is that high-quality II-VI colloidal nanocrystals, CdSe and (CdSe)ZnS in particular, can be synthesized using mild precursors, exerting fine control though the proper selection of ligands. Chapters 2 and 3 show that extremely high-quality CdSe nanocrystals can be synthesized using mild precursors such as Cd(acac)2 and Cd(OH)2 while achieving higher quantum efficiencies, higher reaction yields, smaller size-distributions, and with finer control over the final size in comparison to previous methods. In addition to the batch synthesis, Chapter 3 shows the development of a microfluidic flow reactor using a mixed highboiling STP liquid solvent. It is found that the temperature, flow rate, and precursor ratios are parameters that can be used to control the size and size-distributions of the final products. The CdSe cores are overcoated with ZnS from Zn(acac)2 to form highly stable and highly luminescent (core)shell colloids in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 develops qualitative arguments based on the Drago-Wayland extension of Hard-Soft Acid-Base Theory to describe the actions of surfactant ligands in the growth solution. It is shown that crystal growth inhibitors can be used to finely control nanocrystal growth, and the precursor-to-inhibitor ratio is fundamental to the final size.

This methodis first demonstrated by Bawendi and coworkersin 1993 to prepare cadmium chalcogenide colloidal quantum dots and laterextended by others to prepare other group II-VI quantum dots as well asanisotropic shaped colloidal nanocrystals, such as nanorod and tetrapod.This dissertation focuses on the chemistry of this type of nanocrystalsynthesis. The synthesis of group II-VI nanocrystals was studied bycharacterizing the molecular structures of the precursors and productsand following their time evolution in the synthesis. Based on theseresults, a mechanism was proposed to account for the 2 reaction betweenthe precursors that presumably produces monomer for the growth ofnanocrystals. Theoretical study based on density functional theorycalculations revealed the detailed free energy landscape of the precursordecomposition and monomerformation pathway. Based on the proposedreaction mechanism, a new synthetic method was designed that uses wateras a novel reagent to control the diameter and the aspect ratio of CdSeand CdS nanorods.

Book excerpt: The primary focus of this thesis is the synthesis and applications of semiconductor nanocrystals, or quantum dots (QDs). Novel synthetic routes to ternary 1-III-VI QDs are presented, and we report the first highly luminescent Cu-In-Se QDs spanning the red to near-infrared region. The synthetic method is modular and is extended to Ag-In-Se, Cu-In-Zn-S, and Ag-In-Zn-S QDs, luminescent from the blue to near-infrared. The development of new core-shell InAs(ZnCdS) QDs is discussed in the context of making highly fluorescent, stable biological probes in the near-infrared region. Applications in biological systems from cellular labeling to sentinel lymph node mapping are demonstrated. In addition, we present new methods for doping InAs QDs in order to control carrier type through the introduction of acceptor defects such as cadmium. The synthesis and characterization of n and p type InAs QDs is discussed. In order to understand the differences in size distributions with current III-V QD synthetic procedures and II-VI and IV-VI QD syntheses we have explored the molecular mechanisms that lead to the formation of InP and InAs QDs. We find that current III-V QD syntheses result in the depletion of molecular precursors immediately following nucleation, preventing growth from molecular precursors, thus failing to meet the a key criterion for a monodisperse colloidal synthesis in the Dinegar and LaMer model. In the conclusion of this thesis, we explore the electrically controlled solution-liquid-solid (EC-SLS) synthesis of InP nanowires. Using the EC-SLS method, we are able to controllably place n type InP nanowires into field effect transistor geometries.

Book excerpt: To date, the search efforts have shifted from the toxic II-VI, III-V and IV-VI semiconductors to more environmentally friendly materials. Among Group II-V semiconductors, Zn3P2 has shown to be a more benign option, similar to Group IV (Ge, Si) materials, for future applications in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. This work is dedicated to the development of wet-chemical synthetic routes of (1) Zn3P2 and (2) Group IV (Ge, Si, Si1-xGex) nanocrystals with precise control over composition, crystal structure, size and dispersity by adjusting different reaction parameters such as temperature, time and solvent composition. Different characterizations will also be employed to probe the size- and composition-dependent physical and optical properties of resulting products. The first part of this work illustrates the synthesis of luminescent Zn3P2 nanocrystals, an earth-abundant and a direct-gap semiconductor possessing high absorption coefficient and long carrier diffusion length, which uphold promising potential in many optoelectronic applications. A hot injection method by using highly reactive P and Zn precursors (P[Si(CH3)3]3 and diethyl zinc) in hexadecylamine and octadecene was developed to prepare a series of alkyl-amine-passivated tetragonal Zn3P2 crystallites with varying size sizes. Substantial blue shifts in the absorption onsets (2.11 - 2.73 eV) in comparison to the bulk counterpart (1.4 - 1.5 eV) and a clear red shift with increasing particle size indicates the quantum confinement effects. This is also consistent with the photoluminescent studies with the size-tunable maxima in the visible region (469 - 545 nm) as a function of growth temperature and time. The phase purity and alkyl-amine passivation of the nanocrystals were determined by structural and surface analysis, confirming the presence of N - Zn and N - P bonds on the tetragonal Zn3P2 crystallites. The second part of this works focuses on the development of a colloidal synthetic strategy of alkyl-amine capped Si1-xGex nanocrystals with control over size- and composition-dependent optical properties. Despite their high miscibility at all compositions, developing a wet-chemical synthesis of Si1-xGex alloys in the nanoscale remains a challenging task, owing to the difference of their crystallization temperatures and the high surface oxidation of Si. Thus an adapted colloidal method is utilized to fabricate single-element Ge and Si nanocrystals. Powder X-ray diffraction indicates successful production of cubic crystalline Ge and amorphous Si nanoparticles individually in oleylamine/octadecene (surfactant/solvent) mixture at 300°C. Absorption onset values of 1.28 eV and 3.11 eV are obtained for resulting Ge and Si colloids, respectively. By alloying these two materials in their nano-regime, tunable optical properties can be achieved throughout the visible to the near IR region by simply varying their elemental compositions. The success of this bandgap engineering process offers more options for new material design by taking advantage of unique properties from each component material.

Control of experimental variables during the formation of colloidally stable nanoscale solids within a liquid matrix allows for tailoring of the particles' characteristics, including shape, size, composition, and surface chemistry. In this dissertation, I will discuss how the manipulation of reaction chemistries can be used to synthesize shape-controlled metal and semiconductor colloidal nanocrystals. Further, I will elaborate on the mechanisms by which these particles form from molecular precursors and describe how their properties can differ from their bulk analogues through extensive characterization, especially using transmission electron microscopy. These studies contribute to the continued development of chemical routes to nanocrystals and their application as functional materials.First, I will review recent advances in the synthesis and characterization of shape-controlled nanocrystals, as well as highlight their promising applicability in a number of emerging technologies. These principles will then be leveraged to the specific case of catalytically-active rhodium nanocrystals, which can be synthesized with morphological and dimensional control using a polyol solution-mediated strategy. I describe an innovative shape-controlled synthesis to monodisperse colloidal rhodium icosahedra, cubes, triangular plates, and octahedra using this route. Additionally, new insights into the important role of the polyol reducing solvent on the synthesis of these nanocrystals are revealed, and how these might be exploited to engender superior reaction control and novel products.Next, I will describe how a crystallization mechanism was established for the synthesis of numerous morphologies of noble metal nanocrystals. I present a thorough analysis of the synthesis of shape-controlled rhodium nanocrystals, using extensive transmission electron microscopy characterization, and relate these findings to one of the primary synthetic levers available in the polyol synthesis: the anionic ligands present. Further, I show that the crystallization process proceeds by a nonclassical mechanism in which cluster particles serve as a stable intermediate between molecular precursors and the final product. I then apply these principles to the shape-controlled synthesis of other noble metal nanocrystals before expounding a generalized formation mechanism in the polyol synthesis of colloidal metal nanocrystals. Finally, I will highlight my efforts in the designed synthesis and characterization of colloidal tin(II) sulfide (SnS) semiconducting "quantum dot" nanocrystals. I describe a route for the solution synthesis of monodisperse colloidal SnS nanosheets, nanocubes, and nanospherical polyhedra in high yield. Further, detailed crystallographic characterization of these nanocrystals using transmission electron microscopy indicates that their atomic structure possesses a previously-unreported nanoscale deviation from the bulk phase. Additionally, I show that their electronic and photocatalytic properties of these quantum dots are both shape-dependent and distinct from bulk SnS.

Book excerpt: Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, with unique size-dependent optical properties, have great promise for integration into next generation technologies including solid-state lighting and biological labeling. A general method of reproducible, large scale and environmentally safe synthetic preparation becomes crucial for integration in commercial devices. In addition to the synthetic protocol, an understanding of the surfaces of the as prepared material is critical for obtaining a high quantum yield that is stable for long periods of time in ambient conditions. In this dissertation, a new synthetic approach to general colloidal nanocrystals is presented. Microwave heating of molecular precursors increases the rate of reaction from days to minutes for a host of nanomaterials. The most relevant for the study of inorganic phosphors is CdSe and InP and their respective ternary analogs. Post synthetic surface treatment of the as prepared material show a tremendous increase in the QY for as prepared InP and InGaP. Post synthetic surface treatment is carried out by photoactivated etching with dilute HF. In the case of InGaP, the QY reaches 0.80 from 0.05 in a matter of minutes. Other surface treatment strategies that address the stability is carried out by forming epitaxial core shell structures. It is shown that using ZnS as a wide band gap shelling material, the QY of InP reaches 0.42 in solution and is stable for months. These are significant steps toward the engineering of semiconductor quantum dot phosphors for solid state lighting and biological labeling.
