Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper the present methods of boron preparation are discussed with emphasis on the iodide intermediate. Several methods of boron triiodide preparation were investigated, the most satisfactory method being the preparation from the elements. A yield of 60 pct based on iodine is found for this method. Zone-refining, sublimation, distillation, and fractionalrecrystallization results are given for the boron triiodide, with distillation producing the best results. Several methods of decomposition are also discussed. The purity of the resulting iodide boron approximates the purity of the best available bromide boron. (Author).

This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended as a textbook for courses involving preparative solid-state chemistry, this book offers clear and detailed descriptions on how to prepare a selection of inorganic materials that exhibit important optical, magnetic and electrical properties, on a laboratory scale. The text covers a wide range of preparative methods and can be read as separate, independent chapters or as a unified coherent body of work. Discussions of various chemical systems reveal how the properties of a material can often be influenced by modifications to the preparative procedure, and vice versa. References to mineralogy are made throughout the book since knowledge of naturally occurring inorganic substances is helpful in devising many of the syntheses and in characterizing the product materials. A set of questions at the end of each chapter helps to connect theory with practice, and an accompanying solutions manual is available to instructors. This book is also of appeal to postgraduate students, post-doctoral researchers and those working in industry requiring knowledge of solid-state synthesis.

Book excerpt: Many of the advanced ceramics being developed today are boride, carbide and nitride materials. These are targeted for applications in both electronic and structural markets. This book aims to address methods for the synthesis of these materials. This text is intended as an overview of the subject and is suitable for practitioners in the industry as well as those looking for an introduction to the field. The subject matter ranges from introductory material properties and applications to various methods of synthesis including pre- and post-synthesis processing. Although most of the text is concerned with the synthesis of powders, chapters are included for other materials including whiskers, platelets, fibres and coatings. Specific safety considerations are discussed for each part of the text. The book is split into nine parts covering a wide range of topics under the heading and includes an appendix comprising selcted data for crystallographic, thermodynamic, thermal, mechanical, electrical, magnetic and chemical properties of some boride, carbide and nitride materials.

Book excerpt: The production and availability of thirteen high-purity metals are discussed in this report. Information about the purest available polycrystalline and single crystal forms of each of the metals is presented. Also included is information about less pure forms of the metal, usually including a grade which might be defined as commercially pure. Some of the newer techniques for analyzing or characterizing the purity of the metals are discussed without including methods of chemical analyses. The thirteen metals covered by this report include the refractory metals molybdenum, tungsten, columbium, tantalum, and rhenium; special light metals, beryllium, and titanium and metals with an intermediate melting point, iron, nickel, chromium, vanadium, and zirconium. The semi-metal, boron, is the thirteenth element. Individual sections for each of the metals are presented in alphabetical order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanotechnology is a vital new area of research and development addressing the control, modification and fabrication of materials, structures and devices with nanometre precision and the synthesis of such structures into systems of micro- and macroscopic dimensions. Future applications of nanoscale science and technology include motors smaller than the diameter of a human hair and single-celled organisms programmed to fabricate materials with nanometer precision. Miniaturisation has revolutionised the semiconductor industry by making possible inexpensive integrated electronic circuits comprised of devices and wires with sub-micrometer dimensions. These integrated circuits are now ubiquitous, controlling everything from cars to toasters. The next level of miniaturisation, beyond sub-micrometer dimensions into nanoscale dimensions (invisible to the unaided human eye) is a booming area of research and development. This is a very hot area of research with large amounts of venture capital and government funding being invested worldwide, as such Nanoscale Science and Technology has a broad appeal based upon an interdisciplinary approach, covering aspects of physics, chemistry, biology, materials science and electronic engineering. Kelsall et al present a coherent approach to nanoscale sciences, which will be invaluable to graduate level students and researchers and practising engineers and product designers.
