Book excerpt: In clinical practice, all physicians have to deal with patients suffering from chronic kidney disease. Large numbers of these patients suffer from mild conditions, but nevertheless, they deserve special attention because inappropriate management may accelerate kidney function deterioration. On the other side, patients affected by end-stage renal disease require replacement therapies and often represent a challenge for clinicians due to their complex pathophysiology. Therefore, an adequate knowledge of the most important clinical and therapeutic aspects of renal failure is an essential requirement for every doctor, especially if we consider the increasing incidence and prevalence of this condition. The book summarises the most important etiopathogenetic and pathophysiologic aspects of chronic kidney disease and focuses the attention on important emerging topics: nutritional and dietary management, renoprotective interventions, new evidence about pathophysiological mechanisms provided by base research, innovations in pharmacological treatment, and strategies to improve patient’s quality of life. Data are reported in clear and concise language, supported by graphics, tables, and pictures that facilitate the comprehension of all the arguments.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive compilation of the evidence available regarding the role of genetic differences in the etiology of human obesities and their health and metabolic implications. It also identifies the most promising research areas, methods, and strategies for use in future efforts to understand the genetic basis of obesities and their consequences on human health. Leading researchers in their respective fields present contributed chapters on such topics as etiology and the prevalence of obesities, nongenetic determinants of obesity and fat topography, and animal models and molecular biological technology used to delineate the genetic basis of human obesities. A major portion of the book is devoted to human genetic research and clinical observations encompassing adoption studies, twin studies, family studies, single gene effects, temporal trends and etiology heterogeneity, energy intake and food preference, energy expenditure, and susceptibility to metabolic derangements in the obese state. Future directions of research in the field are covered in the book as well.

It discusses the possible pathological mechanisms that are involved in the development of obesity and highlights obesity-associated molecular mechanisms that contribute to reproductive dysfunctions in men and women. The book provides mechanistic insights on the role of obesity in cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and examines the role of the complementary molecular mechanism of the gut microbiota in the development of obesity. It also reviews the interaction between the metabolic system and immune cells in the pathogenesis of obesity-associated diseases. Lastly, it assesses the latest advances in nanomedicine as an emerging strategy for the treatment of obesity.

This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes is a metabolic disorder of chronic hyperglycemia that causes numerous complications. The International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization report that approximately 537 million people worldwide have diabetes in 2021, which may increase to 700 million by 2045. Diabetes and its complications significantly lower the quality of life of patients and cause more than 4 million deaths yearly. Diabetes and its complications also increase premature mortality, increasing society's economic burden. Numerous studies reveal that the chronic multisystem injury and dysfunction can be caused by diabetes, including cardiac and cerebral vascular lesions, nephropathy, retinopathy and neuropathy. In addition, diabetes usually co-occurs with other diseases that may have certain risk factors in common. For example, patients with diabetes are more likely to have hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or asthma. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the relationship between diabetes and other potential comorbidities such as hepatitis infection, hearing impairment and periodontal disease. Furthermore, common risk factors contributing to the pathogenesis of diabetes and comorbidities are far from fully understood. Several comorbidities (e.g., cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases) raise the extra chances of death in patients with diabetes, but the association between diabetes and mortality of other diseases, such as endometrial or kidney cancer, is inconsistent. Further research is still needed to reveal the excess mortality associated with diabetic comorbidities.

Book excerpt: Obesity in childhood and adolescence has reached epidemic proportions in all industrialized countries around the world. Its impact on individual lives as well as on health economics has to be recognized by physicians and the public alike. Among the most common consequences of obesity in the adolescent are hypertension, dyslipidemia, back pain and psychosocial problems. Therapeutic strategies include psychological and family therapy, lifestyle/behavior modification and nutrition education. The role of regular exercise and exercise programs is emphasized. Surgical procedures and drugs used in adult obesity are still not generally recommended for obese adolescents. This book aims to increase physicians knowledge and understanding of obesity in childhood and adolescence as well as to further public awareness of the health burden and economic dimension of obesity at a young age. Several chapters deliver insights into the basic understanding of which factors contribute to or prevent the development of overweight and obesity in young people. Other contributions provide tools for the clinician to manage the care of the child and adolescent with overweight/obesity. In addition, knowledge from the latest scientific studies on the molecular biology of obesity is also presented.

Book excerpt: This timely and clinically oriented book uniquely addresses the entire spectrum of treatment for severe obesity and diabetes. It thoroughly examines all aspects from robotic surgery to cell therapy, from the latest antidiabetic drugs to endoscopic procedures and devices, from appetite-inhibiting signals and nutrients to gastric arterial embolization. It offers objective and authoritative information for practicing professionals; not only are successful interventions discussed and updated, but cutting-edge and experimental pathways are also anticipated. Obesity is the foremost nutritional challenge worldwide. Its companion is type-2 diabetes, the most prevalent metabolic disease. Together they represent the diabesity epidemic, which is draining resources, overwhelming healthcare facilities, and impacting life expectancy and quality of life everywhere. No country has been spared, and most medical specialties have been affected. Many books focus on the surgical options for obesity and diabetes, namely bariatric and metabolic operations. Information on the clinical and pharmacological treatment is also available, conveyed by standard texts on internal medicine and endocrinology. Yet endoscopic maneuvers and prostheses, cell therapy for diabetes, and other innovative approaches are hard to come by, as conventional texts overlook such therapies. This timely publication bridges the gaps between all different therapeutic options, also covering advances in the conservative, surgical and parasurgical domains. This book will appeal to seasoned specialists, students and healthcare professionals in training alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the crowded and busy arena of obesity and fat studies, there is a lack of attention to the lived experiences of people, how and why they eat what they do, and how people in cross-cultural settings understand risk, health, and bodies. This volume addresses the lacuna by drawing on ethnographic methods and analytical emic explorations in order to consider the impact of cultural difference, embodiment, and local knowledge on understanding obesity. It is through this reconstruction of how obesity and fatness are studied and understood that a new discussion will be introduced and a new set of analytical explorations about obesity research and the effectiveness of obesity interventions will be established.
