Book Synopsis Margaret Tyler, 'Mirror of Princely Deeds and Knighthood' by : Joyce Boro
Download or read book Margaret Tyler, 'Mirror of Princely Deeds and Knighthood' written by Joyce Boro and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Tyler's Mirror of Princely Deeds and Knighthood is a groundbreaking work, being the first English romance penned by a woman and the first English romance to be translated directly from Spanish. As such it is not only a landmark in the history of Anglo-Spanish literary relations, but it is also a milestone in the evolution of the romance genre and in the development of women's writing in England. Yet notwithstanding its seminal status, this is the only critical edition of Tyler's romance. This modernized edition is preceded by an introduction which meticulously investigates Tyler's translation methodology, her biography, her proto-feminism, and her religious affiliations. In addition, it situates Mirror within the context of English romance production and reading, female authorship, and the Elizabethan and Jacobean translation of Spanish romance. This edition will be of interest to scholars of gender studies and of English and Spanish Renaissance literature.

Having watched them and provoked by their gay abandonment, he reveals himself, joins them, and they spend the night alternately sharing their intimate histories and their bodies in orgies of almost religious intensity. The stories they tell include the rape of one in a monastery and the nearly fatal debauchment of another in a convent, as well as encounters with a number of animals. Author Edith Wharton had an unpublished work based on this text.

Book Synopsis Tudor Translation in Theory and Practice by : Massimiliano Morini
Download or read book Tudor Translation in Theory and Practice written by Massimiliano Morini and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a gap in the study of early modern literature, Massimiliano Morini here exhaustively examines the aims, strategies, practice and theoretical ideas of the sixteenth-century translator. Morini analyzes early modern English translations of works by French and Italian essayists and poets, including Montaigne, Castiglione, Ariosto and Tasso, and of works by classical writers such as Virgil and Petrarch. In the process, he demonstrates how connected translation is with other cultural and literary issues: women as writers, literary relations between Italy and England, the nature of the author, and changes in the English language. Since English Tudor writers, unlike their Italian contemporaries, did not write theoretical treatises, the author works empirically to extrapolate the theory that informs the practice of Tudor translation - he deduces several cogent theoretical principles from the metaphors and figures of speech used by translators to describe translation. Employing a good blend of theory and practice, the author presents the Tudor period as a crucial transitional moment in the history of translation, from the medieval tradition (which in secular literature often entailed radical departure from the original) to the more subtle modern tradition (which prizes the invisibility of the translator and fluency of the translated text). Morini points out that this is also a period during which ideas about language and about the position of England on the political and cultural map of Europe undergo dramatic change, and he convincingly argues that the practice of translation changes as new humanistic methods are adapted to the needs of a country that is expanding its empire.
Book Synopsis Kumba Africa by : Sampson Ejike Odum
Download or read book Kumba Africa written by Sampson Ejike Odum and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.
