Book excerpt: En appliquant les principes de la mécanique des fluides à l'étude de l'équilibre des gouttes et des bulles, on montre que le gradient de pression capillaire est égal au gradient de pression hydrostatistique et que, si on adopte comme plan horizontal de référence le plan correspondant à la surface libre du liquide de courbure nulle, les surfaces des gouttes se disposent de façon telle qu'en tout point de la surface, la pression capillaire est égale à la pression hydrostatique en tout autre point de même cote. Le surfaces capillaires de révolution constituent une famille de surfaces dépendant de deux paramètres mais si l'on choisit comme unité de longueur pour les représenter la longueur caractéristique du liquide qui est égale à la racine carrée du quotient de la tension superficielle par la densité et par l'accélération de la pesanteur, la famille des surfaces capillaires ne dépend plus que d'un seul paramètre. On démontre qu'il est possible de déterminer les conditions d'équilibre d'une goutte libre de masse donnée reposant sur un support horizontal et d'en déduire les caractéristiques géométriques. Réciproquement, si l'on connaît les caractéristiques géométriques, on peut en déduire le volume de la goutte, la densité et la tension superficielle du liquide. Des formules approchées qui permettent d'obtenir une précision satisfaisante ont été calculées. Elles sont susceptibles de donner un regain d'intérêt à la méthode de la goutte sessile pour la mesure de la tension superficielle des métaux à haute température. La représentation logique des surfaces capillaires facilite les raisonnements. On en donne quelques exemples en annexe avec une application à la démonstration de la loi de Jurin et au principe du grossissement et du détachement de bulles à l'extrémité d'un tube immergé dans un liquide.
