Nous ne nous intéressons pas à l'industrie touristique qui produit du tourisme de masse, ni même au processus d'institutionnalisation du tourisme dans le milieu rural qui fonctionne selon les règles classiques existantes en économie. Nous nous proposons d'approcher les multiples facettes du tourisme rural de Maramures tel quel s'y présente et d'appréhender cette occupation comme probablement un des facteurs de changement social, culturel et, surtout, identitaire, au sein des communautés rurales de Maramures. Notre questionnement principal porte sur l'identification des ruraux de Maramures ayant cette occupation. L'accent tombe sur la représentation que les propriétaires de pensions touristiques de Maramures offrent de leur identité aux touristes, la façon dont certain "éléments culturels" : éléments constituant leur univers domestique de jadis, vêtements de fête ou cuisine sont convertis en attraction touristique. L'enjeu a été de comprendre comment l'identité des paysans de Maramures qui autrefois faisait partie de l'expérience vécue, allant de soi, relevant de l'expérience ordinaire, devient actuellement dans le tourisme rural une manière d'agir et comment cette identité est transformée en "capital" à exploiter et faire fructifier dans les activités touristiques. L'étude s'appuie sur une approche interprétative et contextuelle, privilégiant le sens donné par les propriétaires de pensions touristiques à leurs représentations en présence des touristes chez eux.
