Great medieval churches are represented by Worksop, Newark and by Southwell, with its exquisite carved 'leaves'. Of its country houses, Wollaton Hall shows Elizabethan architecture at its most fantastic, Bunny Hall the English Baroque at its most bizarre, while Lord Byron's Newstead Abbey incorporates one of the strangest of all monastic ruins. The city of Nottingham, marvellously set between hills, is crowded with sturdy Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings, and enlivened by a strong local tradition of first-rate Modernist architecture.

Those left behind to carry on suffered from harsh winters, lack of food and fuel and flu epidemics. This is the story of the struggles of ordinary people with their everyday lives. It includes the opportunities presented to the criminal fraternity and the contribution that women made to the war effort by filling men's jobs and providing a home for the men to return to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Wild Focus, Earl Nottingham, chief photographer for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and its magazine, provides a unique perspective on Texas featuring images of the woods, waters, and wildlife of the Lone Star landscape. Nottingham’s engaging photography—landscape, nature, and wildlife; environmental portraiture of people; photojournalistic coverage of events, including natural disasters—provides a cohesive overview of biodiversity and the state of conservation in Texas. The nearly 200 stunning photographs collected here encompass the expansive mission of TPWD, presenting traditional landscape images from state and national parks as well as from vast private lands. Cultural and historic sites are included along with environmental portraits of the people associated with those sites. From the state’s wildlife, both great and small, to nature shown in not only its beauty but also its fury—wildfires, hurricanes, and floods—Earl Nottingham offers a visual compendium of events, people, places, and things that have shaped the face of natural Texas. The author logged untold miles and wore through many sets of tires to offer timely stories that would “inform, educate, entertain, and empower” readers about the outdoors. These images that capture the richness and diversity of wild Texas inspire a greater appreciation for the state’s beauty and promote a sense of stewardship for its natural treasures.

Book Synopsis Nottingham Then & Now by : Douglas Whitworth
Download or read book Nottingham Then & Now written by Douglas Whitworth and published by Pitkin. This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outbreak of war in September 1939 no one in the German High Command had envisaged a long and protracted campaign, for which reason the possibility of having to fight at night had not seriously been considered. However, the shortcomings in the Luftwaffe’s night-time defences became all too apparent when Bomber Command, having sustained appalling losses during the day, switched to night attacks. It was only as the bombing of the German homeland became politically embarrassing that serious consideration was given to remedying the problem. Over the next five and a half years, in the night skies of Europe, there followed a life and death struggle between the aircrews of the Nachtjadg and Bomber Command. This book tells the story of five German night fighter pilots: Wolfgang Flack (who founded the night fighter group), Hermann Greiner, Werner Hoffman, Peter Spoden and Paul Zorner. David Williams has collected the vast majority of the information directly from the five pilots, through interviews and correspondence. Each account is thoroughly illustrated using a unique collection of photographs.
