Book excerpt: Noteworthy Families stands as a seminal collection rooted in the nascent field of eugenics, a movement that significantly influenced the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The anthology navigates through the biographical sketches of notable families to explore the hereditary aspects of genius, thereby providing a diverse array of literary styles ranging from the analytical to the narratively engaging. It is notable for its attempt to blend scientific inquiry with literary exposition, thereby occupying a unique place in the annals of both scientific and literary history. The diversity within the collection reflects a broader discourse on heredity versus environment, making it a significant piece for scholars and enthusiasts alike. Francis Galton and Edgar Schuster's collaborative effort in Noteworthy Families brings together a range of intellectual achievements and hypotheses that shaped the early discourse on genetic inheritance and eugenics. Their backgroundsGalton as a polymath influential in the development of early psychological testing and statistics, and Schusters contributions to geneticsmirror the collection's foundational premise. Aligning with both the historical context and the scientific zeitgeist of their times, their work exemplifies the interdisciplinary approach that marked much of early genetic research. The anthology thus offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical and cultural dynamics that informed early 20th-century scientific investigation. This collection is essential for anyone interested in the intersections of literature, history, and science. It offers an unparalleled window into the early conversations surrounding genetics, eugenics, and the legacy of intellectual achievement. Furthermore, Noteworthy Families invites readers to critically engage with the ideas presented, fostering a deeper understanding of how scientific beliefs are influenced by and reflect their social and historical contexts. For scholars, students, and general readers alike, this anthology serves not only as a compendium of influential familial legacies but also as a testament to the evolving discourse on heredity and genius.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocation to reclaim our disability lineage in order to profoundly reimagine the possibilities for our relationship to disability, kinship, and carework Disability is often described as a tragedy, a crisis, or an aberration, though 1 in 5 people worldwide have a disability. Why is this common human experience rendered exceptional? In All Our Families, disability studies scholar Jennifer Natalya Fink argues that this originates in our families. When we cut a disabled member out of the family story, disability remains a trauma as opposed to a shared and ordinary experience. This makes disability and its diagnosis traumatic and exceptional. Weaving together stories of members of her own family with sociohistorical research, Fink illustrates how the eradication of disabled people from family narratives is rooted in racist, misogynistic, and antisemitic sorting systems inherited from Nazis. By examining the rhetoric of genetic testing, she shows that a fear of disability begins before a child is even born and that a fear of disability is, fundamentally, a fear of care. Fink analyzes our racist and sexist care systems, exposing their inequities as a source of stigmatizing ableism. Inspired by queer and critical race theory, Fink calls for a lineage of disability: a reclamation of disability as a history, a culture, and an identity. Such a lineage offers a means of seeing disability in the context of a collective sense of belonging, as cause for celebration, and is a call for a radical reimagining of carework and kinship. All Our Families challenges us to re-lineate disability within the family as a means of repair toward a more inclusive and flexible structure of care and community.

Moms, dads, sisters, brothers — and even Great Aunt Sue — appear in dozens of combinations, demonstrating all kinds of nontraditional families! Silly animals are cleverly depicted in framed portraits, and offer a warm celebration of family love. From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Imagine a house with many rooms, whose walls each have a different color or wallpaper, accenting a family portrait hanging there. On a rustic wooden wall hangs the first portrait—a large family of ducks posing beside a still pond. The next spread shows three pandas in pink vests, much like the pink oriental wallpaper behind them. Each portrait features a gently rhyming line: "Some children live with their grandparents…/and some live with an aunt./Some children have many pets…/and some just have a plant." All of these appealing images demonstrate different ways of being a family. "Some children live with their father./ Some children have two mothers./Some children are adopted./Some have stepsisters and—brothers." The cartoon-style critters contrast pleasantly with more realistic elements—a bamboo plant, a slender ceramic dog, a fat ceramic cat. Families of hippos, tigers, lions, ostriches, and whales join the other family groups in the final spread. The loud-and-clear message is that "if you love each other, then you are a family." And imagine the many children who will be reassured because they have found a portrait of a family they will recognize as their own. A solid choice for most libraries.—Mary Jean Smith, formerly at Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN

Book excerpt: A New York Public Library 2017 Best Books for Teens selected title! It’s the start of Jordan Sun’s junior year at the Kensington-Blaine Boarding School for the Performing Arts. Unfortunately, she’s an Alto 2, which—in the musical theatre world—is sort of like being a vulture in the wild: She has a spot in the ecosystem, but nobody’s falling over themselves to express their appreciation. So it’s no surprise when she gets shut out of the fall musical for the third year straight. But then the school gets a mass email: A spot has opened up in the Sharpshooters, Kensington’s elite a cappella octet. Worshiped . . . revered . . . all male. Desperate to prove herself, Jordan auditions in her most convincing drag, and it turns out that Jordan Sun, Tenor 1, is exactly what the Sharps are looking for.

The world that has been sold to us is not authentic. The sterile white rooms that test observable reality exist to protect us from the things that we might find out if we look for ourselves. Science would have you believe that everything that is has only existed for a finite period of time. Humans are only 200,000 years old. We'll celebrate our world's five billionth birthday in about half a billion years. The books will tell you that we were hunter-gatherers first. We emerged from evolution only recently. We're just a blink in the eye of the universe, hurling through space on a lonely rock. Alone in the universe with nothing on the other side of reality. Lies. We, and the world we live on, is far older than they tell us. There is another world that existed before. Before we evolved. Before the dinosaurs. Before the great ice ages. Before Jesus. Before Babel. Before Pangea. Before everything we know and everything that science teaches us there was a time of technology and magic. Of heroes and gods who walked among us. Of divine creatures barely removed from the birth of our world. This was a time before our eyes were blinded. Before our ears failed to hear the songs of the incarna. Before our souls withered away from the disconnection to the truth. This is the story we have forgotten. This is the Warsong. Delve into the fantastic, futuristic world of Lemuria in Warsong, the Sengoku Punk role-playing game. This 362 page core book includes everything you need to play!
