This book was released on 2002 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Alaskan community of Kingigin (population 165), also known as Wales, more than seventy-five indigenous terms for types of sea ice and ice conditions were recorded in 2007–2008 in the local Kingikmiut dialect of the Inupiaq language. In addition, over 30 terms were collected for various biological and cultural realities associated with the sea ice and ice hunting. Winton Weaypuk, Jr., a boat captain and a speaker of the Kingikmiut dialect, led the effort to collect local ice terms, documented elders’ knowledge about ice, and took over 100 photos of various ice-related activities in the Wales area, as illustrations to the dictionary. Collecting indigenous words for sea ice in Wales was a part of the SIKU (Sea Ice Knowledge and Use) international project. For the SIKU project, over 30 local ice vocabularies were collected in indigenous communities in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka, Russia. The Wales Inupiaq Sea Ice Dictionary is the first to be published in full, with comments and illustrations. Special sections in the book written by project participants (Weyapuk, Krupnik, Anungazuk, Eicken, and Druckenmiller) tell how the Kingikmiut ice ‘dictionary’ was prepared; how indigenous sea ice nomenclatures can be analyzed, and what we learned from compiling indigenous terms for ice in Wales, Alaska and beyond. The book is also illustrated by historical black-and-white photographs taken in Wales in 1922 by biologist Alfred M. Bailey, now in the collection of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Bailey’s photos with comments by today’s experts show how the environment and people’s life in Wales have changed over the past eighty years. Traditional words for ice, illustrations of local ice forms, Inupiaq explanations and English translations of ice types and conditions presented in the book will be of help to Wales students, educators, young hunters, so that the knowledge possessed by elders is preserved for future generations. Inupiaq knowledge about sea ice environment is also an insightful window to polar scientists, students, educators, and media specialists into indigenous people’s vision of Arctic climate change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Thousand Islands' very name conjures up images of great natural beauty and nautical wonders. They are forested islands replete with storybook stone castles. Exquisite mahogany runabouts can be seen speeding across the placid surface of the mighty St. Lawrence. Names like Boldt, Bourne, Emery, Lyon, and Pullman are embedded in the Golden Age of the area, and it all comes to life in this pictorial history of the river. Images of America: Wooden Boats of the St. Lawrence River tells the story of the rich and powerful men who constructed castles and built classic wooden boats in the Thousand Islands. At the center of the story loom David and Charlie Lyon. A descendant of the Lyon family, David Kunz, tells this story through historical photographs. David is the great-great-nephew of Charles Potter Lyon and Helen Griffin Lyon. Bill Simpson, whose first visit to the Thousand Islands was in the fall of 1976, is a novelist and publisher of Simpson Books. The majority of the photographs in this book are from the Lyon Archives on Oak Island"--

Book excerpt: From the desert vistas of Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico ranch to Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner's Hamptons cottage, step into the homes and studios of illustrious American artists and witness creativity in the making. Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Historic Artists' Homes and Studios program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, this is the first guidebook to the forty-four site museums in the network, located across all regions of the United States and all open to the public. The guide conveys each artist's visual legacy and sets each site in the context of its architecture and landscape, which often were designed by the artists themselves. Through portraits, artwork, and site photos, discover the powerful influence of place on American greats such as Andrew Wyeth, Grant Wood, Winslow Homer, and Donald Judd as well as lesser-known but equally creative figures who made important contributions to cultural history—photographer Alice Austen and muralist Clementine Hunter among them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With growing concerns about the security, cost, and ecological consequences of energy use, people around the world are becoming more conscious of the systems that meet their daily needs for food, heat, cooling, light, transportation, communication, waste disposal, medicine, and goods. Powering Up Canada is the first book to examine in detail how various sources of power, fuel, and energy have sustained Canadians over time and played a pivotal role in their history. Powering Up Canada investigates the ways that the production, processing, transportation, use, and waste issues of various forms of energy changed over time, transforming almost every aspect of society in the process. Chapters in the book's first part explore the energies of the organic regime – food, animal muscle, water, wind, and firewood-- while those in the second part focus on the coal, oil, gas, hydroelectricity, and nuclear power that define the mineral regime. Contributors identify both continuities and disparities in Canada’s changing energy landscape in this first full overview of the country’s distinctive energy history. Reaching across disciplinary boundaries, these essays not only demonstrate why and how energy serves as a lens through which to better understand the country’s history, but also provide ways of thinking about some of its most pressing contemporary concerns. Engaging Canadians in an urgent international discussion on the social and environmental history of energy production and use – and its profound impact on human society – Powering Up Canada details the nature and significance of energy in the past, present, and future. Contributors include Jenny Clayton (University of Victoria), George Colpitts (University of Calgary), Colin Duncan (Queen’s University), J.I. Little (Emeritus, Simon Fraser University), Joanna Dean (Carleton University), Matthew Evenden (University of British Columbia), Laurel Sefton MacDowell (Emerita, University of Toronto Mississauga), Joshua MacFadyen (Arizona State University), Eric Sager (University of Victoria), Jonathan Peyton (University of Manitoba), Steve Penfold (University of Toronto), Philip van Huizen (McMaster University), Andrew Watson (University of Saskatchewan), and Lucas Wilson (independent scholar).
