Book Synopsis The First Book of Samuel by : David Toshio Tsumura
Download or read book The First Book of Samuel written by David Toshio Tsumura and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David and Goliath, the call of Samuel, the witch of Endor, David and Bathsheba — such biblical stories are well known. But the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, where they are recorded, are among the most difficult books in the Bible. The Hebrew text is widely considered corrupt and sometimes even unintelligible. The social and religious customs are strange and seem to diverge from the tradition of Moses. In this first part of an ambitious two-volume commentary on the books of Samuel, David Toshio Tsumura sheds considerable light on the background of 1 Samuel, looking carefully at the Philistine and Canaanite cultures, as he untangles the difficult Hebrew text.
Book Synopsis The Textual Basis of English Translations of the Hebrew Bible by : S. C. Daley
Download or read book The Textual Basis of English Translations of the Hebrew Bible written by S. C. Daley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by A. Schenker S. C. Daley’s book, The Textual Basis of English Translations of the Hebrew Bible, moves us beyond existing uncertainties about the textual basis of modern Bible translations to a fresh understanding of the text-critical constitution of well-known English translations of the past four hundred years. Most translations depart from the Masoretic Text selectively, and in-depth analysis of their textual decisions leads (1) to the identification of distinct periods in the textual history of the English Bible, (2) to a classification of the translations by eclectic type, and (3) to the observation that each translation is ultimately unique from a text-critical perspective. The study then revisits the topic of the text to be translated in Bibles intended for the wider public.
Book Synopsis Linguistic Dating of Biblical Texts: Volume 2 by : Ian Young
Download or read book Linguistic Dating of Biblical Texts: Volume 2 written by Ian Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of critical scholarship biblical texts have been dated using linguistic evidence. Until now there has been no introduction to and comprehensive overview of the field. Volume 2 of Linguistic Dating of Biblical Texts contains an extensive overview of dates attributed to different books and corpora of the Hebrew Bible in modern scholarship, demonstrating the lack of consensus on the dating of biblical texts. A synthesis of the main arguments of the work is presented, drawing also on many points from volume 1, followed by 50 pages of case studies, a list of linguistic features attributed to LBH in earlier research, a bibliography of 70 pages and several indexes.

Book Synopsis Michal's Moral Dilemma by : Jonathan Y. Rowe
Download or read book Michal's Moral Dilemma written by Jonathan Y. Rowe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-06-21 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michal's Moral Dilemma proposes that attention should be paid to the moral goods that feature in the text, before arguing that the family, a central feature of Old Testament morality, should be understood as a set of practices rather than an institution. Jonathan Rowe discusses the use of "models" of social action to comprehend the social world of the Bible, and suggests a modified version of Bakhtin's theory of heteroglossic voices can help readers appreciate how authors present a moral vision by approving some characters' actions whilst undermining others. The discussion of Michal's moral dilemma adduces anthropological theories and ethnographic data concerning violence, lying, and the relationship between fathers and daughters. Given that the conflicts of moral goods are "resolved" by characters choosing to act in a certain way, Rowe enquires after the author's assessment of each character's moral choices, arguing that Michal's loyalty to David and deception of Saul was counter-cultural. By approving of her choice the author affirms the importance of loyalty to the Davidic dynasty.
