Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parish Churches of the Diocese of Canterbury: With Descriptive Notes The success which has attended the small books 'Notes on the Cathedrals' emboldens the editor to attempt a series on the Parish Churches of England. The first volume is naturally devoted to the Diocese of Canterbury, and by special permission is dedicated to His Grace the Archbishop. It will be noticed that the illustrations are of the exterior of the buildings only, the descriptive notes being more especially devoted to the interior and to the history. For it is the exteriors that help to charm the English landscape, and so often draw from the traveller the exclamation, 'What a delightful old church!' All the Churches are illustrated; for although some of them may be wanting in beauty, there is not one that has not an interest of some sort. Our taste and our love will, of course, be for the Mediaeval building, for the 'ivy-mantled tower, ' or the historic monuments, but it will be a great mistake if we overlook the strikingly beautiful buildings which have been erected in recent years. Thanks are due to those of the Clergy who have supplied valuable information about the buildings. It is to be regretted that exigencies of space prevent the inclusion of much interesting matter. Mr. Oyler has visited every Church, and again regret is felt that for only a part of his notes is there room in the book. A few historical facts have been gleaned from Murray's 'Handbook of Kent, ' Mr. Walter Jerrold's 'Highways and Byways in Kent' (Macmillan), and Mr. Clinch's 'Little Guide to Kent' (Methuen) - all most useful and delightful volumes. The arrangement of the volume is in Deaneries, and as far as possible alphabetical, but the shape of the photographs, or the grouping of united benefices, has on several pages necessitated modification of the plan. In all cases the patron of the living is given. When the name is omitted the gift is with the Archbishop of Canterbury. Five of the Views of Canterbury Cathedral are from the copyrights of The Photochrom Co. All other illustrations have been specially taken by Messrs. De'ath and Dunk, of Maidstone, who have in other ways been of great service in the preparation of the volume. This must be my excuse for the delay which has occurred in the production of this volume, an excuse which will not be available for the conclusion of the work, as the ground that has been already traversed has given me opportunities of collecting no little material relative to every church in the county. Although articles on all the churches described in this volume, (with the exception of one or two of the less important chapelries, ) appeared in the Derbyshire Times, it will be found that very nearly two-thirds of the pages are entirely new or completely re written.viii derbyshire churches. It has been my aim to gather together, in a condensed and available form, all that relates to the early history of the ancient churches and chapelries of the county, excluding as rigidly as possible that which had no immediate bearing on the subject. It was found necessary in many cases, not only for the elucidation of arms and monuments, but also in connection with the history of the advowsons. To pay some little attention to the manorial records of the different parishes. In these cases, although the published volumes of Pilkington and Davies, of Lysons and Glover (together with numerous other works incidental to the history of the county) were always consulted, vet no statement has been accepted simply on their authority, but the basis of their assertions has been sought out, to be verified or corrected, and numerous fresh particulars have been brought to light which had escaped their observation. For this purpose the very ex tensive series of publications, issued by the Record Commission, commencing in the year 1800, has been thoroughly searched. These cumbersome publications, especially the earlier ones, are usually only to be found in public libraries, but, whilst writing these pages, I was fortunate enough to be able to secure a nearly complete series, that had belongedto the late Master of the Rolls (lord Romilly), which are the more valuable from occasional corrections made, I believe, by his lordship's hand. I have thus been enabled to make a much freer and more complete use of these returns than would otherwise have been possible. The first volume, published in 1997, covered the first forty years of Joseph Priestley’s life in England.
