Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Observations of Injurious Insects: Report, 1879 At Sparham, near Norwich, the lowest temperature of the winter was 3 in the low-lying part of the parish, and 10 on the high ground, on December 25th. At my own stationat Isleworth the lowesttemperature was 10 .5; the lowest observed on grass was 9 .8 on January 12th. The earth temperatures at one foot deep sank to between 32 and 33 from December 24th to the 29th, and also from January 12th to February 6th. An idea being prevalent that "cold kills the grubs," I took the opportunity whilst the great cold tasted of examining the state of all larvae and pupae I could find fully exposed to its influence, whether unsheltered, under bark, or in frozen ground, and found that in all eases, even where the earth was frozen so hard that the mass had to he broken up with a hammer, and the larvae or pupae were perfectly rigid, that on thawing they did not appear to be in any way injured; and in the case of the larvae of the Cabbago Weevil (which was the only instance in which any immediate action was to be expected) they continued the operation of making their earth-cases for pupation (as is usual with this grub on disturbance from the gall) as if nothing had happened. Of these observations I give the details under the headings of the respective insects. In other respects the extreme severity of the winter was favourable to insect preservation, as large numbers were secured from bird attack under the snow or in the frost-bound ground; and also the excessive cold (as shown by the Phonological Report of the Meteorological Society) caused an almost unprecedented mortality amongst the birds; this especially noted amongst tho Turdidae and Starlings. The cold and wet spring subsequently retarded the nesting season, and further diminished the ordinary amount by the great numbers of eggs that were addled. The general returns do not show that any kind of injurious insect has been lessened in amount of appearance by the winter cold, excepting (possibly) the Turnip Fly. This has been little prevalent, but (conjecturally) this is rather owing to failure of the Turnip crops than direct weather influence, as noted in the return: "No Turnips, therefore no Fly." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Some Injurious Insects: Of the Year 1878 Without dwelling longer upon these considerations, permit me to pass directly to a brief notice of a few injurious insects which have come within my notice during the past year - a year, it may be incidentally remarked, so signalized by a scarcity of insects, that the work of collecting for the cabinet, and for scientific study, was almost abandoned. The report made at the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, at St. Louis, in August last, from entomologists representing the various portions of the United States, was unanimous, that of the Noctuidae (a family of the moths comprising the cutworms and a large proportion of the species most detrimental to the agriculturist), not one individual was to be found, where a hundred were to be met with the preceding year. Your attention will first be invited to an insect which now for the first time claims local habitation and a name in our list of insect foes. It may be called The Clover-Seed Fly - Cecidomyia trifolii n. sp. Early in the month of June, 1877, some heads of red clover (Trifolium pratense) were brought to me by Mr. T. L. Harison, Secretary of the New York State Agricultural Society, and my attention was called to some small, worm-like creatures contained within the heads, and apparently feeding upon the seeds. From their acutely elliptical form and vermiform movements when taken from the clover and placed upon a table, they seemed to be the larvae of some species of dipterous insect. All the writers upon economic entomology at my command, American and European, were searched for a notice of the insect, but no mention of it was found. During the same month, examination of heads of clover collected at West Albany, at West Troy, and it is believed at one or two other localities in the State, was made by Mr. Charles H. Peck, State Botanist, whose attention had been called to the insect, and the larvae were discovered within them. On the 19th of the same month, during a field meeting of the Troy Scientific Association held at Schroon Lake, Warren county, N. Y., the larvae, in small numbers, were found by me in some heads plucked in the village of Schroon. Subsequently my engagements were of such a nature, that I made no further observations on the "clover-seed worm" during the season. In the fore part of August, 1878, heads of red clover were handed to me by Mr. Harison, which were said to have been taken from an infested field, but I failed to detect the presence of larvae. On the 19th of the same month, six heads were sent from the President of your Society, Mr. George W. Hoffman, of Elmira, N. Y. They contained very few seeds, but the examination was not sufficiently thorough to enable me to say whether the seeds had not been formed, or if their substance had been devoured by the larvae - the latter was thought at the time to be the explanation of their paucity. Within some of the pods larvae were found very nearly filling their interior. Upon picking the flowers apart and strewing them upon a black surface, the larvae readily left their concealment and commenced traveling over the table. The flowers were shaken several times during a half-hour, until no more larvae emerged from them. A number of the pods were then opened, but all were found deserted by the occupants which they may have contained. It is probable that the larger number of the larvae had matured and left the heads before they were received by me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Some of the Insects Injurious to Vegetation Most insects, in the course of their lives, are subject to very great changes of form, attended by equally remarkable changes in their habits and propensities. These changes, transformations, or metamorphoses, as they are called, might cause the same insect, at different ages, to be mistaken for as manv different animals. For example, a caterpillar, after feeding upon leaves till it is fully grown, retires into some place of concealment, casts off its caterpillar-skin, and pre sents itself in an entirely different form, one wherein it has neither the power of moving about, nor of taking food; in fact, in this its second or chrysalis state, the insect seems to be a lifeless oblong oval or conical body, without a distinct head, or movable limbs; after resting awhile, an inward struggle begins, the chrysalis-skin bursts Open, and from the rent issues a butter y or a moth, whose small and abby wings soon extend and harden, and become fitted to bear away the insect in search of the honeyed juice of owers and other liquids that suffice for its nourishment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to the Household and Annoying to Man The present work is not intended as a treatise on the relation of insects to disease. The author's colleagues are now at work on a thorough and extended discussion of that phase of the subject. In the following pages, the writer devotes the principal part of the discussion to the habits, injuries, and control of insects simply as pests of the household and of man, contenting himself with a brief summary of the relation of insects to disease. It is hardly to be expected that SO brief a work will include all of the insect pests that may invade the household but an attempt has been made to discuss, at least, the most important ones with which our present knowledge makes us more or less familiar. The erroneous ideas and unnecessary fears prevalent regarding the poisonous nature Of certain insects and their near relatives and the interest evinced in this matter have seemed to warrant the addition of a chapter on this subject. In this discussion, the author has at tempted to state the Simple truth and to clear away, as far as existing knowledge makes it possible, the hazy and almost superstitious notions regarding the venomous qualities of these small animals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Fruits It has been the aim of the author of this work to bring together all the important facts relating to insects known to be injurious to fruits in all parts of Canada and the United States, to add to the information thus obtained the knowl edge he has acquired of the habits and life-history of many of our insect pests by an experience of over twenty years as a fruit-grower and a student of entomology, and to pre sent the results in as concise and plain a manner as possible, avoiding all scientific phraseology except such as is necessary to accuracy. The arrangement adopted under the several headings, by which the insect pests which attack the different parts of the tree or vine under consideration are grouped together, will, it is hoped, with the aid of the illustrations, greatly facilitate the determination of any injurious species. When having before him its history briefly traced and the remedies which have been found most useful in subduing the insect, the reader will at once be enabled to decide as to the best meth ods to be employed. The author desires to make the fullest acknowledgment to those of whose work he has availed himself. The methods by which the escape from this imprisonment is made at the proper time, are various and interesting to the observer.
