In the appendix I have indicated after the name of each author the translation used. Here no name is given, the extracts were translated either by Mr. R. F. Scholz or by myself. In using the translations I have made a few slight changes in wording and punctuation. I have usually retained any important notes given in the translations. The illustrations are intended merely to suggest that pictures form a very important class of sources. In the appendix brief statements are given as to the provenance and description of these pictures. Most of our text-books are well illustrated, and their pictures should be utilized as far as possible for class room exercises. No fancy-pictures should be so used; only representations of actual remains, of statuary, or of Roman drawings. The students should describe what the picture represents and its historic importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire It is stated on the title-page that the researches of recent commentators upon the Decline and Fall of the Roman Em pire are incorporated in the text of the present work. These additions are taken from my own notes and from those of Dean Milman and M. Guizot, inserted in the edition of the original work published in 1854-1855. In drawing up an Abridgment intended for younger students and general readers, it seemed desirable to interweave in the text the necessary cor rections and additions, instead of distracting their attention by references to foot - notes, contradicting or modifying assertions in the text. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Vol. 1 The notes are partly derived from former commentators, and are partly composed by the present editor. The former class of notes is taken from the annotated edition of Dean Milman, who, in addition to his own remarks, has given those of M. Guizot and M. Wenck, appended to the French and German translations respectively. In using the valuable ma terials thus placed at his disposal by the kindness of Dean Milman, the editor has adhered to the principles mentioned above, and has therefore omitted several notes which seemed to him superfluous. But, while he has exercised an indepen dent judgment in adopting or rejecting the labors of his predecessors, he desires to acknowledge the great obligations he is under to Dean Milman, whose notes have received the approbation of the most competent scholars, and who has in many parts of the work added everything necessary to cor rect the errors or supply the deficiencies of the text. This is more especially the case in the chapters relating to Chris tianity, upon which the editor has abstained from making any remarks, believing that the criticisms of so distinguished a divine as Dean Milman would be more valuable and satis factory than any which could be offered by a layman whose studies have lain in another direction. In addition to the assistance derived from former oommen tators, the editor has much pleasure in acknowledging his obligations to his friend Mr. Layard, who has supplied him with valuable information upon the portions of Gibbon's work relating to the geography and history of the East. He has not only care fully gone through all the essays, preparing them for press, but has undertaken the entire work of correcting the proofs - a task of no small difficulty considering the intricate nature of the notes. I am convinced that, through his care, the remediable and accidental errors have been reduced to a minimum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Titus Livius' Roman History: Translated Into English, and Illustrated With Notes, Critical, Historical and Geographical, for the Use of Students in Humanity In the study of history there is this peculiar advantage There you have examples of every kind set before you, in a conspicuous point of view; whence you may set up models for your imitation, as an individual or a state, or beacons to warn you against base attempts, which end in disgrace. But either I am prepossessed in favour of the work I have undertaken, or there never was a state more respectable for its greatness, its sanctity, or variety of excellent characters. Never was there into which luxury and avarice found their way nor where poverty and frugality were held so long and so much in re te, that the less they had, the less they desired. Of te years, riches have introduced luxury, soda profusion of pleasures, a taste for extravagance in all the ways of riot and debauchery: but as complaints will not even then be agreeable, when perhaps they are necessary, let us at least drop them in the introduction to so great a work, or rather, were it fashionable with us histdrians, as it is with the poets, set out with more eniivening ideas, with good omens, and vows, and prayers to the gods and goddesses, that they would vouchsafe to-grant success, adequate to the greatness of the undertaking. Book excerpt: Books VI-X of Livy's monumental work trace Rome's fortunes from its near collapse after defeat by the Gauls in 386 bc to its emergence, in a matter of decades, as the premier power in Italy, having conquered the city-state of Samnium in 293 bc. In this fascinating history, events are described not simply in terms of partisan politics, but through colourful portraits that bring the strengths, weaknesses and motives of leading figures such as the noble statesman Camillus and the corrupt Manlius vividly to life. While Rome's greatest chronicler intended his history to be a memorial to former glory, he also had more didactic aims - hoping that readers of his account could learn from the past ills and virtues of the city.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Rome as Greeks and Romans Tell It: An Elementary Source-Book The object of this volume is to supply pupils in Roman history with interesting and instructive reading from the sources. This purpose has determined not only the selec tion of the material, but also the method of presentation. Although the book contains some descriptions of institu tions, it is largely narrative and biographical; preference has been given to those passages which illustrate life and character, ori which help the reader to an appreciation of general literature. To make the subject-matter intelligible as well as attractive to young readers, the quotations have been so connected and interwoven as to form a continuous story, and the difficulties have been explained in notes and references. These features will doubtless commend the book to many who, having passed the age of the pupil, are still interested in the literature and the life of ancient Rome. As a basis for the text, English translations, so far as they are available, have been used with the consent of the publishers. These translations, however, have been freely altered, with a view chiefly to the simplification of the style; at the same time care has been taken to reproduce faithfully the meaning of the authors represented. D. 476 The title of a General History is given to this book, first, because it is addressed to no special class of readers, but rather to the reading public in general, who may desire to be informed Of the most noted incidents in the Roman annals, the most remarkable characters which play their part upon the Roman stage, and the main course of events, together with their causes and con sequences. With this Object directly in view the writer has no occasion to load his pages with references, or justify his statements by notes and critical discussions, for which his prescribed limits would allow him no room. It is for the orator, says the great critic of antiquity, to argue and persuade; the historian may confine himself to narration. But in cutting myself Off from the resource of notes and references, I must at the same time refrain from disquisitions and speculations which cannot be con ducted safely or fairly without them. These I must leave to the critical inquirer and the professed student; my pages are addressed, as I have said, to the general reader.
