Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Physical Diagnosis It is important that you should be familiar, not only with the boundaries of these regions, but with the relative position of the structures and organs or portions of organs included within them. The surface of the chest may be divided into three general regions, - Anterior, Posterior, and Lateral. The Anterior region, on either side, may be subdivided into Supra-Clavicular, Clavicular, Infra-Clavicular, Mammary, and Infra-Mammary. Between these two regions we have the Supra-Sternal, Superior Sternal, and the Inferior Sternal. The Posterior region, on either side, may be subdivided into the Superior Scapular, Scapular, and Inferior Scapular. Between these you have the Inter-Scapular. The Lateral region, on either side, may be subdivided into Axillary, and Infra-Axillary regions. The Supra-Clavicular region is a triangle whose base corresponds to the trachea, lower side to the clavicle, upper side to a line drawn from the outer third of the clavicle to the upper rings of the trachea. This region contains, on either side, the apex of the lung, with portions of the subclavian and carotid arteries, and the subclavian and jugular veins. The Clavicular space is that which lies behind the inner three-fifths of the clavicle, and has the bone for its boundary. It is occupied on both sides by lung tissue; on the right side, at its outer extremity, lies the subclavian artery: at the steno-clavicular articulation, the arteria innominata. On the left side, almost at right angles with the bone, and deeply seated, are the carotid and subclavian arteries. The Infra-Clavicular region has for its boundaries, the clavicle above, the lower border of the third rib below, the edge of the sternum inside, and outside a line falling vertically from the junction of the middle and outer third of the clavicle. C. Rosenberger and Dr. John Funke, of the pathological staffs of these institutions. Recknagel model-studies and figures standardized to Cunningham have been utilized for many of the diagrams by Mr. E. F. Faber and by Mr. J. V. Alteneder. The sphygmograms and cardiograms are the work of Dr. George Bachmann, and the radiographic plates were made by Dr. W. F. Manges. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Diagnosis In the following pages an effort has been made to epitomize, for the use of students the various physical methods employed in the diagnosis of a medical case, and to as far as possible explain the origin and clinical significance of those described. The subject has been approached from a practical standpoint, the chrono logical order adopted being that employed in the actual examination of patients, special stress being laid on Inspection for which, however, the author feels no apology is needed. The Appendix was added merely to aid the student in following out the ordinary laboratory technic, only those methods being described which are in daily use in the routine exam inations required by the clinicians of St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the advanced technologies at our disposal today, a complete health history and physical examination remain the most crucial diagnostic tools in any healthcare practitioner's arsenal. And no one teaches these all-important skills better than Mark H. Swartz, MD, FACP. For nearly two decades, Dr. Swartz's textbook has shown readers how to derive the maximum diagnostic information from interviewing and examining patients. Using a compassionate, humanistic approach, Dr. Swartz explores how cultural differences can influence communication, diet, family relationships, and health practices and beliefs, and demonstrates that your interpersonal awareness is just as essential in physical diagnosis as your level of technical skill. In this 6th Edition, a new chapter on the focused physical exam prepares you for the USMLE Step 2 CS and the OSCE. You can access the complete contents of the book online at www.studentconsult.com. Discussions of special considerations emphasize cultural differences that may affect your approach to patients ... guide you through assessment of nutritional status ... and inform you of things to look for and remember when examining children, pregnant women, older patients, and acutely ill patients. Pathophysiology explanations help you understand the causes of the symptoms you encounter. Abundant color photographs capture the real appearance of various diseases. Coverage of complementary and alternative medicine alerts you to the clinical implications of these increasingly popular modalities. An appendix on examination of the Spanish-speaking patient provides translations for commonly used medical phrases and questions is available on www.studentconsult.com Over 3 hours of video on DVD demonstrate the complete physical exam of an adult male patient, the breast and pelvic exam of an adult female patient, and the examination of pediatric and geriatric patients. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Physical Diagnosis: For the Use of Students and Physicians Advantage has been taken of the opportunity afforded by the demand for another edition of this manual to improve it and extend it as far as consistent with the original purposes of the book. The section on the examination of blood has been enlarged, so as to meet more completely the requirements of a modern blood examination. The same may be said of the section on the chemical examination of gastric contents. A num ber of new illustrations have been introduced, together with other additions of a minor character, all intended to add to the accuracy and usefulness of the book. I am indebted to Prof. A. C. Abbott and Dr. Alfred Stengel for assistance in the technique of the blood. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of Diagnosis: Being a Series of Questions Based Upon a Work on Clinical Medicine by Dr. Clarence Bartlett, and a Course of Lectures in Physical Diagnosis, by Dr. E. R. Snader In presenting a syllabus of such an ever widening field of medical science as diagnosis, the writer feels that he is supplying a need not only of the student undertaking the subject for the first time, but also of the advanced student in the research connected with his clinical work. It seems to have been the complaint of students in general that they hardly know where to begin the study of such a large subject. In order that the book may be of particular service to the Hahnemann College student the same plan of arrangement is carried out as is found in that excellent work of Dr. Clarence Bartlett on the subject.
