Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Industrial Conditions Our system of government was diverted from its normal course of development by the accident of our civil war. And we have never returned to the line of natural and healthful evolution which we then abandoned. The habit of employ ing the powers of the general government for everything that could be accomplished by their instrumentality, which our people acquired during the war, prepared the way for an over-development of government and a vast over-produc tion of legislation during the period following the close of the struggle. This powerful impulse toward the abnormal extension of the powers of the national government was accompanied and re-enforced by a general decay and disso lution of the local communities. The energy of the town ship life before the war was not less moral and social than political in its manifestation. A vigorous and decisive pub. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Industries of the United Provinces IN April 1907, the Government of the United Provinces deputed me to enquire into the condition of the local industries and the possibilities of their develop ment. A report based mainly on available written materials, printed and unprinted, supplemented in some cases by personal inquiries and observation, was submitted in the following July. This report was placed before the Industrial Conference that met at Naini Tal in the autumn of last year, and was at the same time communicated to the press. Since then, under the orders of the Government, I have pursued the inquiry by touring through all the industrial centres of the province. I have also had the advantage of going round the principal industrial towns of the Madras Presidency in the company of Mr. A. Chatterton, and have paid short visits to various places in Bengal, the Central Provinces, Western India, Rajputana and the Punjab. The preliminary report has been almost entirely rewritten. An account of the industrial condition and possibilities of the province is now published in the form of these Notes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Factors in Industry: A Study of Group Organization To consider all the elements which are involved in a complete study of the labor problem would be impossible in any single volume. Study of the subconscious necessities of human development - which operate in connection with industry as they do in connection with all other social progress - would lead into the realm of philosophy if it were to be pursued to fundamentals. Merely to obtain an immediate and practical understanding of the conditions would require an examination of social and political progress in the various industrial countries, in order to explain the relation between labor troubles and political outlook; while educational methods and conditions have so important a bearing upon the development in industrial relations that a proper consideration of the question would require a very careful analysis of these conditions. The extent and value of present medical knowledge, the effect of universal suffrage, and the effect of racial and traditional religions would form a part of any complete analysis of the matter. This volume intends to deal only with the relation of the question to the practical development of industry in the more or less immediate future. For that reason it will be confined to those industrial methods, in the present and the comparatively recent past, which are necessary to the analysis of this part of the subject. Wherever it is important to deal with the social, educational, or other general aspects of the matter, in order to show the way in which they have affected industry, these matters will be stated as concisely and clearly as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colorado Industrial Plan Labor and Capital are rather abstract words with which to describe those vital forces, which working together become productively useful to mankind. Reduced to their simplest terms Labor and Capital are men with muscle and men with money -human beings, imbued with the same weaknesses and virtues, the same cravings and aspirations. It follows, therefore, that the relations of men engaged in industry are human relations. Men do not live merely to toil; they also live to play, to mingle with their fellows, to love, to worship. The test of the success of our social organization is the extent to which every man is free to realize his highest and best self; and in considering any economic or political problem, that fundamental fact should be recognized. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experience With Works Councils in the United States In August, 1919, the number of Works Councils in industrial concerns in the United States was 225, according to a survey made at that time by the National Industrial Conference Board for its first report on the Works Council movement, which gave an account of substantially all that were then functioning. Since then, a number of employers have abandoned their employee representation plans, but a much larger number of employers have instituted Councils in their plants, so that in February, 1922, there were approximately 725 such organizations in operation in this country. The great majority of the Works Councils covered in the Boards first report on the subject 1 had at the time of its publication been functioning on an average for not more than one year. This was a year of business prosperity; production was in demand, labor was scarce and wages were high. Following this came a period of business adversity; the demand for goods fell off, working forces were reduced, and wages declined. Widespread interest was manifest as to how Works Councils would stand the strain of such a period of depression. Were employee representation plans practicable only in times characterized by high wages and high prices? Would employees lose interest in the Councils when wage reductions became necessary? These and similar questions were raised as to the status and value of Works Councils during a period of decreased production and falling wages. In order to answer these questions adequately, and ascertain the practical experience of employers with their Works Councils during such a period, the National Industrial Conference Board conducted a country-wide investigation. The great majority of the Works Councils treated in the present report have been in operation for periods varying from two to five years. An account of industry's experiences with these Works Councils during that period is presented herewith. Terminology The term Works Council as used in this report is taken to mean "a form of industrial organization under which the employees of an individual establishment, through representatives chosen by and Works Councils in the United States." Research Report No. 21, Boston, October, 1919. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
