Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Horsemastership A number Of horse-lovers, who have been kind enough to peruse Modern Horse Management, have asked me why I do not publish a few notes on the care of the horse now that hostilities have ceased. As a matter of fact, the book referred to above was published a considerable time after the war commenced, and since that date I have taken various notes from lessons learnt whilst connected with horses in the Cavalry for over three years in France. During the earlier days of the war, when I was attached to the Infantry, I always went out of my way to study the all-important art of Modern Horsemastership. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horsemanship in School and Country This manual is dedicated to lovers of the noble sport of horsemanship, who, whether following the usual course in a riding-school or not, will find the reading of these chapters useful and interesting. It may also serve as a reference book to which one may refer at any time or place, in order to recall the suggestions already received from the instructor. The author has aimed at clearness and conciseness, and as far as possible, at a logical progression of instruction. The reader will find here and there some general information which bears directly upon the practical worth of the instruction given. The work is the result of twelve years' experience in horsemanship, during which time the author has never neglected to observe any new point that might arise, and to investigate its cause and remedy. Most of the theories here expounded were suggested to him at the Italian School of Cavalry in Pinerolo, where he followed the perfecting course in horsemanship under excellent instructors, second to none in theory and practice both in the riding-school and in the field. It was under the instruction of these masters that he had the opportunity to treasure up not only the most salient points in the theory of the art, but also much valuable information resulting from actual practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Horsemanship Just before the commencement of the war, I started, through the courtesy of the editor of the Field, publishing a series of articles on horsemanship. This series was rudely interrupted by the outbreak of war, and my military duties precluded my taking any further steps for a considerable period. But after fighting in France continuously for nearly four years, it was my fate, through the fortune of war, to be taken prisoner. Taking advantage of the enforced leisure at my disposal, I have passed many an otherwise weary hour in compiling this little volume. If it gives any of my readers as much pleasure to read as it has given me to write, I shall be fully rewarded; but it is more than I can hope that they will finish the last page with as much regret as I felt on the conclusion of my task. Now that peace has been declared and we can, once more, resume the pleasures of the hunting field, of racing, polo, and the show-ring, I am at last able to place my MSS. into the hands of the publishers. Even after more than twenty three centuries it is still, in the main, a sound and excellent guide for so much of the field as it covers. This fact, together with the simple and delightful manner in which the subject is treated, has led me to think that some who are not able or do not care to approach the book in the original Greek, might like'to read a translation of the earli est known work on the horse and how to ride him. To be sure, there have already been versions in English; but these seem to me, and have seemed to others, unsatisfactory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Saddle-Horse: A Complete Guide for Riding and Training The young horse soon becomes tractable, and, as long as his temper is unruffied, he desires to do that which is required of him. Until the spirit of rebellion is awak ened, he is as anxious to avoid the perils of battle as his master should be. If, upon an occasion, he declines to perform some movement that is required of him, let his attention he turned to that which will please him, and his obedience in this will induce his obedience afterwards to the first demand. To give up to him after a battle will confirm his obstinacy, but he will soon forget his unnoticed defiance. Under proper treatment he will in time yield to the will of his master, without dreaming of resistance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Half an hours stroll in the Park, or a few minutes' loll over the rails by Rotten Row, will convince any capable equestrian that this popular belief is not founded on fact, but, on the contrary, is a palpable fallacy. During the London season, and out the of season, some of the worst, as well as some of the best, riding in the world is displayed. Before the Crimean War our cavalry rode very indifferently, so much so that Napoleon the Great is reported to have said that did he possess our horses, he could readily beat our men. But we have changed all that. Of hard-riding, bold-riding, and rough-riding we could always boast, but with us the manage (derived from the Latin words, manis, "the hand," and ago, "to do, or act") was never popular. A national failing is to "talk horse," but a large majority are supremely ignorant on the subject, and few and far between arc those who can be termed manus agcre, or skilful to handle. Recognizing the incompleteness of such a work, the writer will be glad to correspond with those into whose hands this book may fall concerning difficulties in the training of horses, and also to receive suggestions that will aid in perfecting the horse's education. Our men are superior to those of other nations, and there is no quality in which the well-bred English horse does not excel, no performance in which he cannot beat all competition. No, it is the system which is at fault. To ascertain and expose the faults of an existing state of things is easier than to substitute a different one, which shall not be liable to greater objections; a trial of the system which I advocate, will, at least, prove interesting, and I hope establish beyond a doubt the great advantages to be derived from it.
