Gunnery School handbook drawn up for the information of Masters and Trained Gunnery Ratings of defensively armed merchant vessels. Valuable information covering: General instructions; Instructions for drill and practice; Sighting; Care and maintenance; Drill for all guns; Single gun control; Single gun anti-aircraft control; Ammunition; Hints on shooting; Notes on the submarine. During the Great War the UK blockaded Germany and armed its merchant ships to help defend them against U-boats. A single stern gun, equivalent to what a submarine might carry, was mounted, and civilian captains were encouraged to flee and shoot back from their more stable gun platform. 766 civilian ships had been armed by December 1915, and rose to 2,899 by February 1917. Arming of merchant ships pushed Germany away from prize rules towards unrestricted submarine warfare.

Book excerpt: "In Defeating the U-boat: Inventing Antisubmarine Warfare, Newport Paper 36, Jan. S. Breemer tells the story of the British response to the German submarine threat. His account of Germany's 'asymmetric' challenge (to use the contemporary term) to Britain's naval mastery holds important lessons for the United States today, the U.S. Navy in particular. The Royal Navy's obstinate refusal to consider seriously the option of convoying merchant vessels, which turned out to be key to the solution of the U-boat problem, demonstrates the extent to which professional military cultures can thwart technical and operational innovation even in circumstances of existential threat. Although historical controversy continues to cloud this issue ... Breemer ends his lively and informative study with some general reflections on military innovation and the requirements for fostering it."--Foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize in History. Wartime commander, tactical innovator, military educator, iconoclastic troublemaker, Pulitzer Prize winner—those categories have only come together in a single military leader in American history. They all accurately describe Admiral William S. Sims (1858–1936), Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in European Waters during World War I. Sims spent nearly an entire career rocking the boat and challenging the conventional wisdom, and yet he ended up in London in one of the most important naval missions in history as the U.S. Navy’s commander responsible for coordinating the war with First Sea Lord Admiral Sir John Jellico and the allies. Part operational history, part personal memoir, when The Victory at Sea was published in 1921 it offered the first account of the naval operations against the German U-boat threat and revealed insights about the dangers the submarines posed to Britain and the war effort. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for history, the book remains a standard text about the war, but also provides important insights for 21st century readers, including understanding the challenge of antisubmarine warfare, the complexity of planning military operations with allies and partners, and issues of military command and control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglo-German naval rivalry before 1914 had been expected to culminate in a cataclysmic fleet action in the North Sea once war was declared, a battle upon which the outcome of the war would depend: yet the two fleets met only once, at Jutland in 1916, and the battle was far from conclusive. In his own account of the war in the North Sea, first published in 1920, Admiral Scheer, the German commander at Jutland, gives his own explanation for the failure of either fleet to achieve the decisive victory expected of it, particularly the failure of his own operation plans that resulted in the battle of Jutland. This book is an invaluable account of one of the most important theatres of the First World War, written by one of its most senior commanders.
