Book Synopsis Indigenous Data Sovereignty by : Tahu Kukutai
Download or read book Indigenous Data Sovereignty written by Tahu Kukutai and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the global ‘data revolution’ accelerates, how can the data rights and interests of indigenous peoples be secured? Premised on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, this book argues that indigenous peoples have inherent and inalienable rights relating to the collection, ownership and application of data about them, and about their lifeways and territories. As the first book to focus on indigenous data sovereignty, it asks: what does data sovereignty mean for indigenous peoples, and how is it being used in their pursuit of self-determination? The varied group of mostly indigenous contributors theorise and conceptualise this fast-emerging field and present case studies that illustrate the challenges and opportunities involved. These range from indigenous communities grappling with issues of identity, governance and development, to national governments and NGOs seeking to formulate a response to indigenous demands for data ownership. While the book is focused on the CANZUS states of Canada, Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand and the United States, much of the content and discussion will be of interest and practical value to a broader global audience. ‘A debate-shaping book … it speaks to a fast-emerging field; it has a lot of important things to say; and the timing is right.’ — Stephen Cornell, Professor of Sociology and Faculty Chair of the Native Nations Institute, University of Arizona ‘The effort … in this book to theorise and conceptualise data sovereignty and its links to the realisation of the rights of indigenous peoples is pioneering and laudable.’ — Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Baguio City, Philippines

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Grasses and Forage Plants of the Southeastern States Rice - Rice is grown by Mr. Lewis at Apalachicola for horse feed, for which he thinks it about as valuable as corn. Richardsonia scabra (mexican clover). - This plant often appears in cultivated land after the crop has been taken Off, and is usually associated with crab grass. I saw it nowhere large enough to make good hay. Opinions differ as to its worth. Dr. C. Mohr thinks it of some value. Judge R. C. Long, of Tallahassee, does not esteem it and keeps it out of his land. A gentleman who resides near Thomasville, Ala., described a succulent plant of sandy bottoms under the name of water pusley, which I think must be the Richardsonia. He says it is very palatable to cattle and is excellent for green manuring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Tuberculosis Movement by : Michael E. Teller
Download or read book The Tuberculosis Movement written by Michael E. Teller and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-04-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tuberculosis Movement presents a detailed description of the evolution of the American tuberculosis movement from its inception in the late 19th century to its maturity in 1917. As Teller demonstrates, the tuberculosis movement during this era pioneered many of the methods of contemporary public health--the voluntary association dedicated to eradicating a specific disease, close cooperation between physicians and laity and between public and private agencies, and campaigns of mass public education. The most comprehensive study of the movement to date, this book contains a wealth of information not found in any other history of the campaign against tuberculosis, including full accounts of the backgrounds, motivations, and ideology of the movement's leadership; the origins and activities of the state and local associations and their cooperation with other groups in the fight to control the disease; the educational campaign mounted by the movement's leadership; and public health measures and institutions established to restrict the spread of the disease.

Book Synopsis The White Death by : Thomas Dormandy
Download or read book The White Death written by Thomas Dormandy and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 2002-03-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The victims of tuberculosis (usually known as consumption) included not only Keats, The Brontës, Chopin and Chekhov, but members of almost every family. It was a killer on a huge scale. The White Death is an outstanding history of tuberculosis. Thomas Dormandy's engrossing account of the search for a cure is complemented by a description of its complex natural history and by portraits of individual sufferers, including writers, artists, and musicians, whose lives and work were shaped (and often tragically curtailed) by the disease. But, tuberculosis is not just a disease of the past. In many parts of the world it is still a bigger killer than AIDS, while in America and Europe drug-resistant strains threaten its resurgence.
